Contraceptive services for adolescents in Latin America: facts, problems and perspectives.

This review presents facts about sexual and contraceptive behavior of Latin American adolescents, analyzes barriers to contraception, and summarizes present perspectives. Between 13 and 30% of Latin American adolescent women live in union before their 20th birthday and between 46 and 63% have had sexual relations. The prevalence of contraceptive use among adolescents at risk of pregnancy remains very low. The pill is the best known contraceptive method. When sexual activity becomes a permanent practice, contraceptive use increases but remains low. Barriers to contraception can be identified as

Biological implications of polyparasitism.

Polyparasitism appears to be the rule, rather than the exception, both in populations and in individuals in the developing countries of the world. Thus, polyparasitism represents coendemicity in the epidemiologic sense and simultaneous infections in individual patients in the clinical sense. The effects of polyparasitism are often clinically inapparent. In some situations, however, combined infections may exacerbate clinical manifestations. Coexistent infections may also, under some circumstances, suppress disease symptoms. The possibility of either synergistic or antagonistic effects must the…

Assessment of combustion products of medical waste incinerators in Alexandria.

The emissions and ashes from medical waste incinerators might perform a threat to the environment and the public health. The aim of the pres … ash samples were much higher than those in developed countries, meanwhile, more or less as those in developing countries. It is recommended to state specific realistic emissions limits for medical waste incinerators and to substitute sporadic incinerators in hospitals by two central incinerators in proper places outside the city.

Opportunistic infections associated with HIV infection in Africa.

HIV-associated infections in sub-Saharan Africa differ markedly in their incidence from those in industrialized countries. Tuberculosis is the commonest cause of morbidity and mortality. Enteric pathogens such as microsporidiosis commonly cause disease as access to safe water is limited. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, which is the commonest opportunistic infection in industrialized countries, is uncommon in adults with HIV infection. This remains unexplained because P. carinii pneumonia is common in Black African HIV-infected children. Cytomegalovirus and Mycobacterium avium complex, which on

HIV-related oral disease epidemiology among women: year 2000 update.

OBJECTIVES: The goals of this literature review were to (1) update a prior review [Shiboski CH (1997) The epidemiology of HIV-related oral manifestations in women: a review. Oral Dis 3: S18-S27] of studies on the epidemiology of HIV-related oral manifestations in women prior to the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART); (2) explore the effect of HAART on HIV-related oral disease among women; and (3) explore future research directions with respect to HIV-related oral disease epidemiology among African women. METHODS: A computer-assisted search was conducted to identify s

Socioeconomic differences in reproductive behaviour.

There are marked socioeconomic variations in the risk of female reproductive cancers. We examine here data from the World Fertility Surveys, the Demographic and Health Surveys, and other national surveys, to assess whether these variations in cancer risk might be explained, at least in part, by socioeconomic variations in reproductive behaviour. There were marked socioeconomic differentials in achieved parity, age at first birth, final childlessness, duration of breastfeeding, and possibly also age at menopause. These differentials were present in almost all settings: countries with low and hi

Prevention and treatment of rheumatic heart disease in the developing world.

The prevalence of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in industrialized countries has declined dramatically over the last century, but the disease remains an important global health problem with the burden of disease shouldered by developing countries. Indeed, data from epidemiologic surveys, which used echocardiography as the primary screening tool, indicate that the prevalence of RHD in developing nations might have been substantially underestimated. Despite the high burden of disease globally, there has never been a sustained and comprehensive international strategy to control RHD. The current fo…

[Helicobacter pylori and upper digestive disease at the Main Hospital of Dakar. Study apropos of 105 consecutive endoscopies].

Gastro-duodenal ulcer is a very frequent disease in Senegal and Helicobacter pylori (HP) being an ubiquitarian germ infects people living in developing countries in an over-early way and this most frequently. We have realized a prospective study dealing with 105 adult patients sent to hospital principal's endoscopy center. We were searching for HPs into three different methods which are as follows: using ordinary slats, clo-test, histological process. The results have confirmed the existence of a very high rate of infection due to HP, with among adults living in developing countries: 82% of ou…

[Nutritional deficiencies affecting children of the Third World. The example of Ethiopia (author's transl)].

For the large non-privileged population groups in developing countries and diet shows many deficiencies, often with major disturbances of health as a consequence. This is particularly true for the children. The monotony and the bulkiness of the traditional diet, the often sparse number of meals as well as periodic deteriorations of the food situation ("hungry season") all contributes to make the nutritional situation precarious. The vicious circle between PEM and infections contribute in a major way to the high mortality rate among preschool children in developing countries. In this paper a re…

EASL Clinical Practice Guidelines on hepatitis E virus infection.

Infection with hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, representing an important global health problem. Our understanding of HEV has changed completely over the past decade. Previously, HEV was thought to be limited to certain developing countries. We now know that HEV is endemic in most high-income countries and is largely a zoonotic infection. Given the paradigm shift in our understanding of zoonotic HEV and that locally acquired HEV is now the commonest cause of acute viral hepatitis in many European countries, the focus of these Clinical Practice Guidelin…

An updated approach to viral hepatitis E.

Viral hepatitis E (VHE) is considered to be the most common acute viral hepatitis worldwide. Since the 1980s, VHE has been reported in developing countries. Although VHE is not a reportable disease in many developed countries, it is evidently on the rise even in these countries [1].In Europe, VHE is no longer an imported disease and efforts have been made to map VHE cases in both humans and animals to be able to update the recommendations for VHE prevention, risk assessment for blood product and organ transplants recipients, prevention strategies for severe and chronic VHE, and laboratory test…
