Driving behavior of alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine abuse treatment clients and population controls.

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: A paucity of research exists on driving after use of cannabis or cocaine among clients in substance abuse treatment and changes in this behavior after treatment. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this research are to compare treatment clients and population controls before and after treatment in terms of: 1) amount of driving; 2) alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine consumption; 3) driving after use of alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine; and 4) driving infractions. METHOD: Telephone interviews were conducted with a sample of 110 clients who received treatment in 1995 for a primary

Synaptic plasticity in the thalamo-cortical pathway as one of the neurobiological correlates of forelimb flexion conditioning: electrophysiological investigation in the cat.

1. In a previous study, using a chronic cat preparation subjected to an associative conditioning procedure, we described the plasticity of the thalamo-cortical pathway by qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing the motor responses induced by stimulating each of the relays on the cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathway. In the present study, it was proposed to analyze the effects on the synapses located between thalamic endings and cortical neurones, using a twofold behavioral and electrophysiological approach, with a view to correlating the patterns of synaptic plasticity with the changes in the

The Effects of Chronic Substance Misuse on the Auditory and Vestibular Systems: Preliminary Findings.

OBJECTIVES: Accumulating reports suggest that substance use disorders (SUDs) potentially lead to hearing and/or vestibular loss, particularly when overdose is involved. However, the existing literature is weak, consisting of case reports or small sample studies and that did not comprehensively evaluate both the auditory and vestibular systems. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of chronic substance misuse on behavioral and physiological auditory and vestibular outcomes in adults with substance misuse histories (SUD group) as compared with an age- and sex-matched control

Frontotemporal correlates of impulsivity and machine learning in retired professional athletes with a history of multiple concussions.

The frontotemporal cortical network is associated with behaviours such as impulsivity and aggression. The health of the uncinate fasciculus (UF) that connects the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) with the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) may be a crucial determinant of behavioural regulation. Behavioural changes can emerge after repeated concussion and thus we used MRI to examine the UF and connected gray matter as it relates to impulsivity and aggression in retired professional football players who had sustained multiple concussions. Behaviourally, athletes had faster reaction times and an increased er

Cloninger's psychobiological model of personality and psychological distress in fibromyalgia.

AIM: Personality can play an important role in the clinical symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM). The aim of this study is to identify personality profiles in FM patients and the possible presence of personality disorder (PD) from the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised (TCI-R), and to assess whether personality dimensions are related to psychological distress in FM. METHOD: The sample consisted of 42 patients with FM and 38 healthy controls. The TCI-R, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Short-Form-36 Health Survey, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and McG

Psychoticism and neuroticism predict cocaine dependence and future cocaine use via different mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Personality characteristics have been associated with cocaine use. However, little is known about the mechanisms through which personality could impact drug use. The present study investigated the cross-sectional and prospective relationships between personality dimensions (i.e., impulsivity, neuroticism) and problematic cocaine use. Reactivity to a pharmacological stressor as a potential mediator of the relationship between neuroticism and future cocaine use was also examined. METHODS: Participants were 53 cocaine-dependent individuals and 47 non-dependent controls. Subjects comp

Multidimensional social control variables as predictors of drunkenness among French adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of the determinants of drunkenness among youth investigated the contribution of a limited range of variables measuring social control. For the first time in France, this study including 1295 participants aged 14-19 years aimed at assessing the relative contribution of a broad range of multidimensional variables relating to social control such as parental and school functioning, conventional and religious beliefs, and activity level, in a single model predicting self-reported drunkenness episodes. METHODS: A logistic regression model based on a survey involving nea

Frequency of adolescent self-cutting as a predictor of HIV risk.

OBJECTIVE: A wide range exists in the frequency of adolescent self-cutting behavior; however, the implications of this variability are relatively unexplored. Although evidence suggesting a relationship between self-harm and sexual risk behaviors has been identified, little is known regarding the relationship between frequency of self-cutting and sexual risk. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that adolescents who repeatedly self-cut would report more HIV risk behaviors and riskier attitudes than those who had engaged in infrequent self-injury. METHOD: Adolescents (11-18 years; mea

Abnormal latent inhibition and impulsivity in coloboma mice, a model of ADHD.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. The coloboma mouse model of ADHD exhibits profound hyperactivity. To determine whether coloboma mice exhibit other signs of ADHD, we assessed latent inhibition as a test of attention, and impulsivity in a delayed reinforcement paradigm. Latent inhibition was present in control mice but was disrupted in coloboma mice. Coloboma mice also exhibited impaired performance on the delayed reinforcement task and were not able to wait as long as control mice to obtain the greater reinforcer.

Measuring impulsivity in school-aged boys and examining its relationship with ADHD and ODD ratings.

Seven different laboratory measures of impulsivity were administered to a group of 165 school-aged boys. Parents' and teachers' ratings of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional/Defiant Disorder were also obtained. Factor analyses of impulsivity measures revealed the existence of a strong Inhibitory Control Factor including measures derived from Stop Task, the Continuous Performance Test, the Matching Familiar Figures Test, and the Circle Tracing Task. Other forms of impulsivity like resistance to interference, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and efficiency in the DRL Ta

Cerebral X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy Associated with Hemophilia A: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The co-occurrence of hemophilia A and X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) represents an exceptionally rare clinical scenario. Both the F8 and ABCD1 genes are situated at the Xq28 locus, a gene-dense region where independent pathogenic variants may co-segregate due to low recombination rates and the presence of mutational hotspots. We report a rare co-occurrence of distinct pathogenic variants in both genes in the same patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old male with FVIII deficiency (hemophilia A), caused by a heterozygous c.3652delG variant in the F8 gene, presented with cut

Prior exposure to methylphenidate attenuates ethanol-induced conditioned place preference in zebrafish.

Methylphenidate (MPH) is a psychostimulant widely prescribed for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Its primary mechanism of action involves inhibition of dopamine and noradrenaline reuptake. The non-medical use of methylphenidate by individuals without neurodevelopmental disorders has been increasing and becoming widespread in contexts of misuse and as a nootropic. This translational study aims to investigate the long-term effects of repeated MPH exposure on the susceptibility to alcohol-induced addiction. The conditioned place preference test (CP

Lower-Extremity Joint Function During a Drop Jump: Relationships to Performance and Maximal Strength.

Haischer, MH, Ahn, N, and Kipp, K. Lower-extremity joint function during a drop jump: relationships to performance and maximal strength. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2026-Humans modulate joint stiffness during movement based on stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) loading demands. In performance tasks such as jumping, the SSC helps maximize vertical impulse through potentiation of concentric force after eccentric loading. However, joints can serve different locomotor functions (i.e., strut, spring, motor, or damper) while coordinating to achieve an overarching goal. Furthermore, while strengt

Evaluating personality pathological profiles in temporal lobe epilepsy and functional seizures according to DSM-5 alternative model for personality disorders.

The 5th version of DSM introduced an Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), which conceptualizes personality pathology as result of impairments in personality functioning and maladaptive personality traits. As well-known, personality disorders represent a common psychiatric comorbidity in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) and Functional Seizures (FS). This study aims to characterize personality pathology in these populations according to DSM-5 AMPD using the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 and Personality Inventory for DSM-5. Furthermore, association between patho

Clinical characterization of mixed manic features in depressed adolescents without bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depressed adolescents with co-occurring manic symptoms (mixed features) face an elevated risk for poorer treatment outcomes and suicide. We aimed to characterize mixed manic features in non-bipolar depressed adolescents and investigate their associations with the clinical presentation of depression. METHOD: The sample included 178 adolescents (mean age: 15.2 ± 1.7, 66% female), including 140 with moderate-to-severe depression (with/without co-occurring manic symptoms) and 38 without psychiatric diagnoses. Adolescents and parents completed semi-structured interviews, Depression Rat

Trichotillomania in bipolar spectrum adolescents is associated with an affective dysregulation phenotype: a multidimensional and cluster-analytic study.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is a body-focused repetitive behavior that may function as an affect regulation strategy. In bipolar-spectrum youth, persistent emotion regulation difficulties may be particularly relevant for early recognition and intervention. In a cross-sectional design, euthymic adolescents with bipolar disorder and a documented lifetime history of TTM (BD+TTM) were compared with euthymic adolescents with bipolar disorder and no lifetime TTM (BD-only) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (40 participants per group). None of the BD+TTM participants had active hair-pulling at asse

Emotional resonance in the digital society: narrative mediation, platform hierarchy, and virtual consumption in cross-cultural sports communication.

This study examines digital emotional resonance in cross-cultural sports livestreaming through the analytical chain of host narrative-audience affective response-subsequent visible participation. Using the Chinese livestream of the Hakone Ekiden as an observational single-case study, we analyzed 97,878 publicly available interaction records collected across two race days. Sentiment scores for both audience comments and host commentary were generated using a fine-tuned BERT-base-Chinese model, and the main statistical analyses were conducted with 20-s time windows. Lagged correlation and impuls
