Health economic evaluation studies in India's traditional system of medicine (Ayush): A scoping review.

Health economic studies offer valuable insights for improving healthcare decision-making and optimizing resource use. India's traditional medical systems, known as Ayush, are globally recognized. To document health economic studies in Ayush, we conducted a scoping review to examine their characteristics. We used a set of keywords as finalized by field experts to search in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and the Ayush research databases, and the reference lists of selected studies to retrieve the relevant studies until August 2023. Two independent reviewers used the Rayyan web tool to screen the titles

Understanding extracellular vesicles in antiaging.

BACKGROUND: Aging is a multifactorial process marked by gradual cellular dysregulation, regulated by hallmarks, including genomic instability, mitochondrial dysregulation, and chronic inflammation. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially exosomes, have emerged as pivotal mediators of cell-to-cell communication with potential roles in both enhancing and alleviating aging. This review aimed to synthesize existing literature on the mechanistic and therapeutic role of EVs in aging and age-associated disorders. METHODS: A comprehensive narrative review was performed utilizing Web of Science, Scop

Biologic therapy is associated with reduced ocular disease in psoriasis: a real-world study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis is a systemic immune-mediated disease with ocular involvement. While biologic therapies reduce cardiovascular and musculoskeletal comorbidities, their impact on ocular health is not well characterised. We aimed to assess whether biologic therapy is associated with reduced ocular disease risk in psoriasis patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We performed a large-scale, retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network (>160 million patients worldwide). Adults with psoriasis initiating biologic therapy were compared with those receiving non-biolog

Cuproptosis: Current insights into its multifaceted role in disease, cancer, and translational/therapeutic opportunities.

Copper is a vital trace element involved in numerous physiological processes, including mitochondrial respiration, antioxidant defense, and enzymatic function. Its homeostasis is tightly regulated through complex transport systems to avoid both deficiency and toxicity. Recent research has unveiled cuproptosis, a unique form of regulated cell death triggered by copper accumulation in mitochondria, and cuproplasia, a copper-induced mechanism that promotes cell proliferation and tumor progression. This review highlights the dual role of copper in health and disease, emphasizing its pathological i

Benchmarking Accelerometer and CNN-Based Vision Systems for Sleep Posture Classification in Healthcare Applications.

Sleep position recognition plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing various health conditions, such as sleep apnea, pressure ulcers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Accurate monitoring of body posture during sleep can provide valuable insights for clinicians and support the development of intelligent healthcare systems. This research presents a comparative analysis of sleep position recognition using two distinct approaches: image-based deep learning and accelerometer-based classification. There are five classes: prone, supine, right side, left side, and wake up. For the image-based meth

Impact of Intramedullary Implants on Metallic Element Homeostasis in Children with Forearm Fractures.

Background/Objectives: Childhood is marked by frequent musculoskeletal injuries, with fractures representing a major cause of pediatric trauma admissions. Unstable long-bone fractures often require surgical stabilization, commonly achieved using elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN). Although this method ensures effective fixation and early mobilization, concerns remain regarding potential metal ion release in growing children. This study aimed to assess changes in calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, titanium, and aluminum concentrations in blood and material from the medullary cavity of

Kampo medicine in the management of menopausal symptoms: A narrative review of therapeutic potential.

Menopausal symptoms primarily result from ovarian dysfunction and declining estrogen levels, leading to multisystem disorders. Although hormone therapy remains the most effective treatment, its long-term use is associated with significant risks, prompting interest in alternative options. Kampo medicine, a traditional Japanese system derived from Chinese herbal medicine, has gained renewed attention as a complementary and personalized therapeutic approach to menopausal health. This review aims to systematically summarize the current application and clinical evidence of Kampo medicine in the man

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies: a comprehensive review, new concepts on diagnostic imaging and whole-body MRI.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) constitute a heterogeneous group of rare autoimmune, chronic inflammatory muscle disorders, resulting in both musculoskeletal and systemic manifestations. They are the leading cause of potentially treatable myositis in both pediatric and adult populations. Precise diagnosis is imperative, as treatment options differ for each disease, directly influencing the patient's therapeutic response and prognosis. The integration of pathological, clinical, serological, and imaging data is vital because of the nonspecific or nearly normal histopathological findings

A Network Analysis of Fear-Avoidance Beliefs, Mood, and Disability in Chronic Pain.

OBJECTIVES: Although the multifactorial nature of chronic pain is well established, research has predominantly examined isolated variables or singular pathways that may contribute to this condition. We use a complex systems perspective to examine the interplay of psychological factors in the context of chronic pain. METHODS: We analyzed 2 cross-sectional data sets (N=935 and 1366) collected at a pain clinic and rehabilitation center in Belgium from individuals primarily with musculoskeletal pain. These included self-reported data on pain-related fear and avoidance beliefs, depression and anxi

A Case of a Father and Son With Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type 1 Exhibiting Different Resting-State Functional Connectivity on Functional MRI.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1 is a chronic pain condition whose pathogenesis involves changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems, with potential genetic contributions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies report that alterations in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) may reflect central nervous system anomalies in CRPS type 1. Herein, we describe the case of a father and son with CRPS type 1 who exhibited different rsFC patterns in fMRI analyses correlating with their individual CRPS phenotypes. A 39-year-old male and his 61-year-old father pr

CT of Periarticular Adult Knee Fractures: Classification and Management Implications.

Periarticular knee fractures, which include fractures of the distal femur, tibial plateau, and patella, account for 5%-10% of musculoskeletal injuries encountered in trauma centers and emergency rooms. These injuries are frequently complex, with articular surface involvement. Surgical principles center on reconstruction of the articular surface as well as restoration of limb length, alignment, and rotation to reestablish functional knee biomechanics. Fixation principles are guided by fracture morphology, and thus, CT with multiplanar reformats and volume rendering is routinely used to help pla

Acquisition of bipedal locomotion in a neuromusculoskeletal model with unilateral transtibial amputation.

Adaptive locomotion is an essential behavior for animals to survive. The central pattern generator in the spinal cord is responsible for the basic rhythm of locomotion through sensory feedback coordination, resulting in energy-efficient locomotor patterns. Individuals with symmetrical body proportions exhibit an energy-efficient symmetrical gait on flat ground. In contrast, individuals with lower limb amputation, who have morphologically asymmetrical body proportions, exhibit asymmetrical gait patterns. However, it remains unclear how the nervous system adjusts the control of the lower limbs.
