[Differential diagnosis between osteoporosis and asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism].

Recently, patients with asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism (aPHPT) are on the increase. When serum Ca, P and intact PTH are determined frequently, it is not difficult to diagnose of aPHPT, even when serum alkaline phosphatase activity is increased in some postmenopausal women. However, the criteria for operation for aPHPT is difficult, because the natural course of aPHPT is unknown, particularly in terms of bone mineral density. Since bone mineral density is genetically regulated by polymorphism of vitamin D receptor (Nature 1994), the analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism

The Potential Role of Chromosomal Polymorphic Variations Attributed to Male Infertility: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a complex condition that can originate from either male or female factors, or both. Genetic factors, such as damage to the Y chromosome, gene defects, and chromosomal anomalies significantly contribute to infertility. Consequently, cytogenetic analysis is a critical component of the systematic clinical evaluation for diagnosing, managing, and monitoring infertility. The purpose of the present study was to assess the prevalence, types, and significance of chromosomal polymorphisms in the East Indian population with a clinical history of male infertility. METHODS: An

Genetic and Epigenetic Association of Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor-1α with Glycosylation in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex trauma-related disorder, the etiology and underlying molecular mechanisms of which are still unclear and probably involve different (epi)genetic and environmental factors. Protein N-glycosylation is a common post-translational modification that has been associated with several pathophysiological states, including inflammation and PTSD. Hepatocyte nuclear factor-1α (HNF1A) is a transcriptional regulator of many genes involved in the inflammatory processes, and it has been identified as master regulator of plasma protein glycosylation. The aim o

Polymorphisms in TNFAIP3, but not in STAT4, BANK1, BLK, and TNFSF4, are associated with susceptibility to Takayasu arteritis.

BACKGROUND: Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is considered a rare disease characterized by nonspecific inflammation of the large arteries, especially the aorta and its major branches. Because TAK is an autoimmune disease (AD), it could share susceptibility loci with other pathologies such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), among others. Widely explored polymorphisms in non-HLA genes, including TNFAIP3, STAT4, TNFSF4, BANK1, and BLK have been consistently associated with both SLE and RA, but they have not been evaluated in TAK. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to

Association of serotonin system-related genes with homicidal behavior and criminal aggression in a prison population of Pakistani Origin.

The serotonin transporter (SLC6A4), 5-HT2A (HTR2A) and 5-HT2B (HTR2B) recepter genes, express proteins that are important regulators of serotonin reuptake and signaling, and thereby may contribute to the pathogenesis of aggressive criminal behavior. 370 sentenced murderers in Pakistani prisons and 359 men without any history of violence or criminal delinquency were genotyped for six candidate polymorphisms in SLC6A4, HTR2A and HTR2B genes. An association of higher expressing L/L and LA/LA variants of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism was observed with homicidal behavior (bi-allelic: OR = 1.29, p = 0.0

Association of Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte Antigen-4 Gene Polymorphisms with Psoriasis Vulgaris: A Case-Control Study in Turkish Population.

Psoriasis is a common, chronic, and autoimmune skin disease in which dysregulation of immune cells, particularly T cells, is thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis. Cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) expressed only on activated T cells is an immunoregulatory molecule and plays a role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders. We aimed to determine whether CTLA-4 gene polymorphisms are associated with development and/or clinical features of psoriasis vulgaris (Pv). Genotyping of SNPs (-318C>T, +49A>G, and CT60A>G) in CTLA-4 gene was performed using polymerase chain react

No association between TGF-β1 polymorphisms and risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in a large North African case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Genetic susceptibility plays a key role in the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and in fact the disease presents with an unusually high incidence in certain regions of the world like North Africa. We investigated the association between polymorphism of the Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and risk of NPC in North Africa. TGF-β1 is a multifunctional cytokine that acts as both a tumor suppressor and a stimulator of cancer development; it has been shown to influence risk of numerous other carcinomas including lung, breast and prostate cancer. METHODS: TGF-β1 polymo

EVC gene polymorphisms and risks of isolated hypospadias - a preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias has a complex etiology with both genetic and environmental factors contributing to the condition. Urogenital abnormalities including hypospadias, are found in 22% of cases with Ellis van Creveld syndrome (EvC). Mutations in the EVC gene can cause major and minor anomalies, which form phenotypes that partially overlap with those present in EvC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between nucleotide variants of the EVC gene and the risk of hypospadias. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the EVC gene (rs3774856, rs2302

Polymorphisms of the SLCO1B1 gene predict methotrexate-related toxicity in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (MTX) is an important component of the therapy for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Treatment with high-dose MTX often causes toxicity, recommending a dose reduction and/or cessation of treatment. Polymorphisms in genes involved in the MTX metabolism have been associated with toxicity with controversial results. The discrepancies could be due to differences in treatment protocols among studies, small, or non-homogeneous populations or the use of different toxicity criteria. The aim of the present study was to analyze the possible correlation of polymorphisms of
