Artificial intelligence derived grading of mustard gas induced corneal injury and opacity.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool in ophthalmology for disease diagnosis and prognosis. However, use of AI for assessing corneal damage due to chemical injury in live rabbits remains lacking. This study aimed to develop an AI-derived clinical classification model for an objective grading of corneal injury and opacity levels in live rabbits following ocular exposure of sulfur mustard (SM). An automated method to grade corneal injury minimizes diagnostic errors and enhances translational application of preclinical research in better human eyecare. SM induced corne

Comprehensive Coagulation Management in Cardiac Surgery: Anticoagulants, Heparin Resistance, Monitoring, and Bleeding Risks : Coagulation Management in Cardiac Surgery.

Effective coagulation management is pivotal to optimizing outcomes in cardiac surgery, influencing bleeding risk, transfusion requirements, and overall perioperative safety. This comprehensive review examines current strategies, limitations, and emerging innovations across anticoagulant use, coagulation monitoring, and bleeding management. Unfractionated heparin remains the standard for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) anticoagulation, owing to its rapid reversibility, though challenges such as heparin resistance persist. Alternatives including low molecular weight heparins, direct thrombin inhibi

Multimodal Data and Deep Learning-Driven Diagnostic and Therapeutic Assistance Framework for Patellar Dislocation.

This study aims to combine multimodal data and artificial intelligence algorithms to construct a model for identifying anatomical risk factors, predicting recurrence risk, and assessing postoperative outcomes. The proposed framework integrates preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative information through a three-stage modeling framework. In the recurrence risk prediction module, we specifically incorporated lipid metabolism profiles and clinical variables, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.83, an F1-score of 0.68, and sensitivity of 0.82. Notably, younger patient age and eleva

Explainable Machine Learning Models Using Routine Clinical Data for Early Prediction of Necrotizing Fasciitis: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), a fulminant soft tissue infection manifesting acute onset and rapid progression with substantial mortality risks, poses diagnostic challenges due to its predominant reliance on clinical evaluation during initial presentation, frequently leading to diagnostic inaccuracies. This study constructs an interpretable machine learning model leveraging clinical data to optimize early prediction of NF. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study analyzed 288 soft tissue infection patients, partitioned into training (n = 201) and validation (n = 87) cohorts us

A reproducible approach for the use of aptamer libraries for the identification of Aptamarkers for brain amyloid deposition based on plasma analysis.

An approach for the agnostic identification and validation of aptamers for the prediction of a medical state from plasma analysis is presented in application to a key risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. brain amyloid deposition. This method involved the use of a newly designed aptamer library with sixteen random nucleotides interspersed with fixed sequences called a Neomer library. The Neomer library approach enables the direct application of the same starting library on multiple plasma samples, without the requirement for pre-enrichment associated with the traditional approach. Eight aptamer

Artificial intelligence and wheezing in children: where are we now?

Wheezing is a common condition in childhood, and its prevalence has increased in the last decade. Up to one-third of preschoolers develop recurrent wheezing, significantly impacting their quality of life and healthcare resources. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have recently been applied in paediatric allergology and pulmonology, contributing to disease recognition, risk stratification, and decision support. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has shaped healthcare systems, resulting in an increased workload and the necessity to reduce access to hospital facilities. In this view, AI

This study explores the potential of 1H-NMR spectroscopy-based metabolic profiling in various biofluids as a diagnostic and predictive modality to assess disease severity in individuals with 5q spinal muscular atrophy. A total of 213 biosamples (urine, plasma, and CSF) from 153 treatment-naïve patients with SMA across five German centers were analyzed using 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Prediction models were developed using machine learning algorithms which enabled the patients with SMA to be grouped according to disease severity. A quantitative enrichment analysis was employed to identify metabolic p

Unsupervised machine learning, QSAR modelling and web tool development for streamlining the lead identification process of antimalarial flavonoids.

Identification of lead compounds with the traditional laboratory approach is expensive and time-consuming. Nowadays, in silico techniques have emerged as a promising approach for lead identification. In this study, we aim to develop robust and predictive 2D-QSAR models to identify lead flavonoids by predicting the IC50 against Plasmodium falciparum. We applied machine learning algorithms (Principal component analysis followed by K-means clustering) and Pearson correlation analysis to select 9 molecular descriptors (MDs) for model building. We selected and validated the three best QSAR models a

Phenotyping heart failure by nuclear imaging of myocardial perfusion, metabolism, and molecular targets.

Nuclear imaging techniques can detect and quantify pathophysiological processes underlying heart failure, complementing evaluation of cardiac structure and function with other imaging modalities. Combined imaging of myocardial perfusion and metabolism can identify left ventricle dysfunction caused by myocardial ischaemia that may be reversible after revascularization in the presence of viable myocardium. High sensitivity of nuclear imaging to detect targeted tracers has enabled assessment of various cellular and subcellular mechanisms of heart failure. Nuclear imaging of active inflammation an

Role of Advanced Glycation End-Products and Oxidative Stress in Type-2-Diabetes-Induced Bone Fragility and Implications on Fracture Risk Stratification.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and osteoporosis (OP) are major causes of morbidity and mortality that have arelevant health and economic burden. Recent epidemiological evidence suggests that both of these disorders are often associated with each other and that T2D patients have an increased risk of fracture, making bone an additional target of diabetes. As occurs for other diabetic complications, the increased accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and oxidative stress represent the major mechanisms explaining bone fragility in T2D. Both of these conditions directly and indirectly (thro

Early recognition and prevention of acute kidney injury in hospitalised children.

Acute kidney injury is common in hospitalised children and is associated with poor patient outcomes. Once acute kidney injury occurs, effective therapies to improve patient outcomes or kidney recovery are scarce. Early identification of children at risk of acute kidney injury or at an early injury stage is essential to prevent progression and mitigate complications. Paediatric acute kidney injury is under-recognised by clinicians, which is a barrier to optimisation of inpatient care and follow-up. Acute kidney injury definitions rely on functional biomarkers (ie, serum creatinine and urine out
