This Letter reports an efficient second- and fourth-harmonic generation based on a stability-enhanced GHz Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:CYA oscillator. It produces 104-fs pulses with an average power of 8.34 W at a repetition rate of 1.08 GHz, corresponding to a peak power of 65 kW. Benefitting from the automatically and fully integrated design, the oscillator exhibits an excellent long-term stability with root mean square of the power fluctuation of only 0.17% during 64-hours free running. It also has a low-noise property with a timing jitter of 6.4 ps in a span from 10 Hz to 1 MHz. By cascading L…

In this study, the synthesis and characterization of iron (III) oxide (Fe₂O₃) nanoparticles using the pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) technique are reported. A 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser was used to ablate a hematite target immersed in different liquid media (acetone, ethanol, isopropanol, and bi-distilled water) under two distinct laser fluences (0.75 and 1.00 J/cm²). Fluence was varied by fixing spot size and changing the laser energy using the laser Q-switch delays, generating colloid with different stabilities within 4 min. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectr…

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), as one of the most prevalent complications of diabetes, leads to significant pain and financial burden to patients. Currently, there was no effective treatment for DPN since the glucose control was just a prevention and the drug therapy only relieved the DPN pain. As a non-invasive physical therapy, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is utilized in the musculoskeletal and nerve injuries therapy. Studies revealed that LIPUS could regenerate nerves by the mechanical stimulation via oxidative stress pathway, which was thought as the important factor for …

Background: Thyroid nodules are common in the general population, and most are benign. Thyroidectomy remains the most common treatment for symptomatic benign thyroid nodular disease. The objective of this study is to determine if a novel, cell-specific, nonthermal modality called nanosecond pulsed field ablation (nsPFA) can provide a safe and effective treatment for symptomatic thyroid nodules. Methods: In this clinical feasibility trial (NCT06117085), an nsPFA percutaneous electrode was used to ablate benign thyroid nodules under ultrasound guidance. In Cohort 1 (5 patients), ablations were c…

Rivers deliver substantial mercury to coastal oceans, significantly impacting seafood safety. However, the time frame for mercury levels and … rcury from historic wastewater discharges was remobilized by hydrologic events, triggering episodic pulses ("Disturbance Recovery") that peaked ∼20 years after controls and reached up to three times the levels of the 1960s-1970s industrial peak. This remobilization was driven by agricultural expansion that enhanced soil disturbance and erosion, compound …

BACKGROUND: Standard femoral venous access may not be feasible in patients with inferior vena cava (IVC) obstruction or bilateral deep vein thrombosis (DVT), necessitating alternative venous routes.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 73-year-old man with paroxysmal AF, antithrombin III deficiency, and chronic bilateral femoral and iliac vein thrombosis. After a failed prior attempt at PVI due to inaccessible femoral veins, a left subclavian approach was selected based on favorable ultrasound imaging. Under deep sedation, subclavian venous access was obtained and a Pentaspline PFA system (F

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration (IDD) is the main contributor to chronic low back pain (LBP), the leading cause of disability worldwide, with a significant impact on the quality of life and health of common people. The etiology of IDD is still unclear, but it has been largely demonstrated the crucial role of inflammation and neuroinflammation in the pathological and degenerative cascade of events characterizing IVD degeneration.
AIM: In this study, we evaluated the potential therapeutic effect of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) on human degenerated IVD (D-IVD) cells col…

Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) applied to the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is commonly performed to manage lumbar radicular pain in human patients. Radiculopathy affecting the seventh lumbar spinal nerve has been identified as key predictor of lumbosacral pain in dogs, yet no published technique exists for placing a PRF electrode adjacent to its DRG to deliver PRF treatment. We describe a novel approach in canine cadavers, integrating ultrasound guidance to locate relevant landmarks and confirm cannula placement under fluoroscopy. Black Indian ink was used to create a localised tissue mark at the t…

BACKGROUND: Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a novel, non-thermal energy for atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation that selectively targets cardiomyocytes with minimal to no risk of collateral damage. Among ablation strategies in persistent AF (PersAF), targeting sites other than the pulmonary veins (PVs) remains controversial, with concerns on improved success without increasing the risk of periprocedural complications and stiff left atrium (LA) syndrome. This study evaluates the impact of an ablation strategy beyond PVs using PFA on arrhythmia freedom and LA function in PersAF patients.

BACKGROUND: Posterior wall isolation (PWI) is often performed in addition to pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) during ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation (PersAF) to decrease recurrence. However, in studies using radiofrequency energy, the addition of PWI failed to demonstrate improved outcomes compared with PVI alone, possibly owing to challenges in achieving durable PWI. PWI with pulsed field ablation (PFA) results in high rates of durable PWI.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that PVI plus PWI, performed with tissue-contact visualization with intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) and confirmat…

BACKGROUND: The impact of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using pulsed field ablation (PFA) on left atrial (LA) function remains incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of PVI performed with PFA vs radiofrequency ablation (RFA) on LA mechanical function in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), using serial echocardiographic strain analysis.
METHODS: In this prospective, single-center study, patients undergoing a first-time PVI for PAF with either RFA or PFA were included. All participants underwent transthoracic echocardiography with 2-dimensional speckle trac…

Pulsed-field ablation (PFA) is a novel, non-thermal energy modality that specifically targets the myocardium by using irreversible electroporation. This review summarizes the available data regarding the effectiveness, safety, and procedural time for PFA versus traditional thermal ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. While recent trials have shown that PFA results in outcomes comparable to those of radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation for rhythm control, they have also demonstrated a significant reduction in collateral damage to surrounding structures such as the esophagus and phre…

While often associated with neurological conditions, muscle dysfunction may also result from primary myopathies and other non-neurological causes, contributing significantly to motor impairment and reduced quality of life. Conventional therapeutic approaches, including electrotherapy, cryotherapy and pharmacological interventions, exhibit limited efficacy and potential adverse effects. By comparison, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has emerged as a promising research focus due to its non-invasive nature, safety profile and therapeutic efficiency. This study presents a novel approach fo…
