Measurements of alkali-labile DNA damage and protein-DNA crosslinks after 2450 MHz microwave and low-dose gamma irradiation in vitro.

In vitro experiments were performed to determine whether 2450 MHz microwave radiation induces alkali-labile DNA damage and/or DNA-protein or DNA-DNA crosslinks in C3H 10T(1/2) cells. After a 2-h exposure to either 2450 MHz continuous-wave (CW) microwaves at an SAR of 1.9 W/kg or 1 mM cisplatinum (CDDP, a positive control for DNA crosslinks), C3H 10T(1/2) cells were irradiated with 4 Gy of gamma rays ((137)Cs). Immediately after gamma irradiation, the single-cell gel electrophoresis assay was performed to detect DNA damage. For each exposure condition, one set of samples was treated with protei

Effective dose delivered by conventional radiology to Aosta Valley population between 2002 and 2009.

OBJECTIVE: Medical diagnostic procedures can be considered the main man-made source of ionising radiation exposure for the population. Conventional radiography still represents the largest contribution to examination frequency. The present work evaluates procedure frequency and effective dose from the majority of conventional radiology examinations performed at the Radiological Department of Aosta Hospital from 2002 to 2009. METHOD: Effective dose to the patient was evaluated by means of the software PCXMC. Data provided by the radiological information system allowed us to obtain collective e

[Use of urography by magnetic resonance for the study of the urinary apparatus versus conventional urography].

UNLABELLED: Conventional urography (IVU) is an essential examination for the assessment of urinary tract but it is not free of complications, such as adverse reactions to contrast agents used (vasovagal and anaphylactic reactions), neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, as well as the damage due to the ionizing irradiation applied to the patient. For this reason, alternative imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance (MR) urography or uro-resonance have been developed. OBJECTIVE: We present a case study assessing the diagnostic accuracy, specificity and sensitivity of uro-resonance and IVU as a mo

The Complex Path from Mammary Ductal Hyperplasia to Breast Cancer: Elevated Malignancy Risk in Atypical Forms.

BACKGROUND: Mammary ductal hyperplasia represents a spectrum of benign proliferative breast lesions, some of which pose elevated risks for malignant transformation into ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive breast cancer. This narrative review explores why only specific types, particularly those with atypia, exhibit higher progression potential, synthesizing epidemiologic, histopathologic, molecular, and environmental insights. METHODS: We reviewed key literature from databases, including PubMed, focusing on classification, risk stratification, genetic/epigenetic mechanisms, tumor microenviro

Macular Hemorrhage as the First Manifestation of Leukemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant neoplasm of the blood and bone marrow characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of precursor cells of B- or T-lymphocyte lineage. Usually, the disease arises because of spontaneous mutations in bone marrow cells. Risk factors include genetic predisposition, exposure to ionizing radiation, prior chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and certain environmental factors. Clinical manifestations may include recurrent infections, anemia, and an increased tendency toward bleeding and stroke. A 12-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with a

LSD1-mediated demethylation of the DNA damage response factor ATM promotes senescence and organ aging.

Aging occurs heterogeneously across organs, leading to progressive tissue dysfunction. Cellular senescence is a stress response triggered by age-associated insults, yet the mechanisms regulating senescence and organ aging remain incompletely understood. Here, we defined a role for lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) in DNA damage-mediated senescence and organ aging. LSD1 was upregulated in aged organs and senescent cells. In response to natural aging or ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage, LSD1 interacted with and demethylated ATM at lysine 3,016, as confirmed using a newly generated ATM-K3

Frequency Stability Degradation in Quartz and MEMS Oscillators.

The operating frequency of a resonant oscillator is determined by the coupled behavior of the resonator, sustaining electronics, package, power supply, mounting conditions, and operating environment. Frequency stability is critical in sensor systems, where oscillators provide references for sampling, synchronization, phase-sensitive measurements, sensor fusion, and distributed sensing. This review examines how these factors affect the short- and long-term stability of quartz oscillators (XOs, TCXOs, and OCXOs) and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) oscillators. Organized by physical cause r

Comparison of hydrogen administration methods in the treatment of radiation-induced heart disease in rats.

Ionizing radiation is a known risk factor for the occurrence and development of cardiovascular diseases, particularly in patients receiving thoracic radiotherapy. This exposure leads to oxidative stress and inflammation, which can damage cardiac tissue and vascular endothelium. Molecular hydrogen (H2) has been recognized for its therapeutic potential, including antioxidant effects. In this study, male Wistar rats were irradiated with a dose of 10 Gy (X-rays) in the chest area. Two and 9 days post-irradiation, significant increases in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), catalase, glutathione peroxidas

The Rich Chemistry of Ionized Methanol With Sulfur Dioxide: Pathways to Prebiotic and Elusive Species in Earth's Atmosphere and Space.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and methanol (CH3OH) are key components in both atmospheric and astrochemical environments, where ionizing radiation can initiate complex reaction networks. Here we investigate the ion chemistry of the CH3OH•+ + SO2 system by combining synchrotron experiments with theoretical analysis. The methanol radical cation CH3OH•+, generated at different photon energies, reacts efficiently with SO2, leading to an abundant distribution of ionic and neutral products. The reaction proceeds through rapid pathways involving the formation of the bound adduct [HOCH2O(H)SO]•+, which acts as

Multiscale Modeling and Systems Biology in Microgravity Investigations.

Spaceflight imposes a unique combination of environmental stressors including ionizing radiation, microgravity, and prolonged isolation that disrupt biological systems from the genome to the proteome. These stressors contribute to a range of health effects such as musculoskeletal degradation, neuroimmune dysfunction, and psychological challenges. Advances in countermeasure development, including biomedical devices and therapeutics, have already yielded terrestrial benefits for conditions like osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. To systematically characterize spaceflight-induced biological

Rib quality assessment using quantitative ultrasound imaging of bone.

This feasibility study evaluated quantitative ultrasound imaging of bone (QUSIB) for non-ionizing assessment of rib quality in the context of breast cancer treatment. In silico, microcomputed tomography-based rib models simulated five-year of the effects of radiation and bisphosphonate therapy. Broadband ultrasound propagation (6-MHz center frequency, 128-element array) yielded backscatter and attenuation coefficients, which were related to structural and material parameters via univariate and partial least squares (PLS) regression analyses with 5-fold cross-validation. The strongest univariat

Damage-induced pyroptosis drives endogenous thymic regeneration by activating the purinergic receptor P2Y2.

T cell recovery is critical following damage, such as hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), with increased reconstitution associated with improved clinical outcomes. Endogenous thymic regeneration, a crucial process for restoring immune competence following cytoreductive therapies such as HCT conditioning, is often delayed, limiting T cell reconstitution. Fully understanding the molecular mechanisms driving regeneration is therefore crucial for uncovering therapeutic targets that can be exploited to enhance thymic function. Here, we identified that CD4+ CD8+ thymocytes rapidly and acutely

DFMFI: ultrasound breast cancer detection method based on dynamic fusion multi-scale feature interaction model.

Ultrasound imaging has become an important method of breast cancer screening due to its non-invasive, low-cost, and ionizing radiation-free characteristics. However, the complexity and uncertainty of ultrasound images (such as speckle noise, morphological diversity of lesion areas, and inter-class similarity) pose challenges to traditional computer-aided diagnosis systems. In response to these issues, this paper proposes a Dynamic Fusion Multi-Scale Feature Interaction Model (DFMFI), specifically designed for the task of benign and malignant breast cancer detection in ultrasound imaging. Updates in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal interventions.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK-US) has evolved from a diagnostic tool into a key modality for guiding minimally invasive interventions across the musculoskeletal system. Its real-time imaging, portability, and absence of ionizing radiation make it a cost-effective and safe alternative to fluoroscopy and CT for numerous procedures, including biopsies, aspirations, injections, and percutaneous releases. Recent technological advances in ultrasound, including high-frequency probes, microvascular imaging, needle-tracking systems, and robotic probe steering, have improved precision and expanded its

Environmentally derived Balamuthia mandrillaris contains endosymbiotic bacteria.

Balamuthia mandrillaris is an environmentally derived, free-living amoeba that causes fatal meningoencephalitis. We previously isolated B. mandrillaris from soil in the Aomori Prefecture and attempted to culture the cell-free amoeba using liquid medium; however, this was difficult to achieve because of contamination of the medium with endogenous bacteria. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of endogenous bacteria in environmentally derived B. mandrillaris and identify bacteria. Two new environmentally derived B. mandrillaris strains were isolated from soil samples collected thr

Current Progress in the CT- and MRI-Based Detection and Evaluation of Acute Pancreatitis Complications.

Acute pancreatitis (AP), a prevalent acute abdominal emergency, frequently leads to severe complications such as pancreatic pseudocysts, acute necrotic collections, and walled-off necrosis. These complications can progress to systemic inflammation and multiple organ failure, significantly prolonging hospitalization and markedly increasing mortality. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are nowadays indispensable in the detection and evaluation of AP complications, and each technique has its own advantages: CT, being widely available and rapid, excels at initial severit

Computational Nuclear Oncology Toward Precision Radiopharmaceutical Therapies: Current Tools, Techniques, and Uncharted Territories.

Radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT), with its targeted delivery of cytotoxic ionizing radiation, demonstrates significant potential for treating a wide spectrum of malignancies, with particularly unique benefits for metastatic disease. There is an opportunity to optimize RPTs and enhance the precision of theranostics by moving beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and using patient-specific image-based dosimetry for personalized treatment planning. Such an approach, however, requires accurate methods and tools for the mathematic modeling and prediction of dose and clinical outcome. To this end, th

Lysosome-Featured Cell Aggregate-Released Extracellular Vesicles Regulate Iron Homeostasis and Alleviate Post-Irradiation Endothelial Ferroptosis for Mandibular Regeneration.

Ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death driven by iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation, is implicated in various diseases, but effective therapeutic strategies remain limited. Lysosomal impairments cause iron dysregulation and initiate ferroptosis, which potentially contribute to ionizing radiation-induced tissue damages. Here, the role of intercellular lysosomal regulation in governing iron homeostasis and protecting against ferroptosis is investigated in models of stem cell aggregation and mandibular regeneration post-irradiation. Lysosomes are discovered to accumulate in specific re

Photoacoustic Imaging for Image-Guided Gastric Tube Placement: Ex Vivo Characterization.

Over 250,000 gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) are placed annually in the United States. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the most widely used clinical method for placing G-tubes within the stomach. However, endoscope detectability is limited due to the scattering of light by tissues. Poor organ visibility and low sensitivity of the palpation techniques cause blind needle insertions, which cause colon/liver perforations, abdominal bleeding, and gastric resections. Additionally, imaging artifacts and the poor distinguishability between water-filled tissues make ultrasound (US) imaging-bas
