Longitudinal Investigation of Anti-A and/or Anti-B Titer Test Results among Blood Donors Using a Single-Dilution Method.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the proportion of high anti-A and/or anti-B titer blood donors at a large blood collector over >3 years. METHODS: Donors of products that could be used in an ABO-plasma incompatible manner were titer tested. Low titer was defined as <100. The study period was January 27, 2020 through May 13, 2023. RESULTS: A total of 11,145 unique donors made 30,035 titer tested donations. There were 843/11,145 (7.6%) donors who made at least one high titer donation. There were 106/167 (63.5%) donors who made a high titer donation on their first donation and subsequently made

ABO and Rhesus (D, C, c, E, and e) Antigen Frequencies Among Blood Donors in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of blood group antigen frequencies in a population is essential for the efficient working of transfusion services. This study aimed to report the frequencies of ABO antigens and the 5 main Rhesus (Rh) antigens (D, C, c, E, and e) in Saudi Arabian blood donors. METHODS: Blood samples were collected in EDTA tubes from 6,188 blood donors for determination of ABO and Rh blood group antigens and Rh phenotypes over a 6-month period. The testing was done using the TANGO Optimo automated blood bank analyzer system. The criteria for selection of blood donors were according to the

ABO blood group and risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma.

Although, for several decades, the role of ABO blood group antigens has been suspected in the development of cancer, to our knowledge, the association between ABO blood group and the risk of malignant melanoma has not been evaluated yet. We, therefore, examined the relationship between ABO blood group and risk of developing cutaneous malignant melanoma. We retrospectively reviewed 445 patients with a histological diagnosis of malignant melanoma. Blood groups were obtained from medical records. The control group was represented by 38 321 patients. We evaluated the data by investigation with sta

Serologic and molecular genetic management of a pregnancy complicated by anti-Rh18.

Antibodies, such as anti-Rh18 (Hr/Hr(S)), that react with the common products of RHCE can cause HDN as well as severe hemolytic transfusion reactions. Individuals with anti-Rh18 antibodies can have different RHCE genetic backgrounds; therefore, sera and RBCs from these individuals may cross-react. In these situations, genotyping may be the best method to determine compatibility. We report a 26-year-old pregnant Puerto Rican woman who presented at 31 weeks' gestation with anti-E and anti-Rh18 in her serum. No potential donors were identified among family members or within the American Rare Dono

Genetic variability in the group of patients with congenital hip dislocation.

Our study of genetic homozygosity degree includes an analysis of the presence, distribution and individual combination of 20 selected genetically controlled morpho-physiological traits in the group of patients (N = 93) with congenital hip dislocation (CDH) and in control sample consisting of school children from Belgrade (N = 200). Assuming that CDH is genetically controlled disease, we made a hypothesis that an increased homozygosity level, as well as the changed variability among the patients, could be population-genetic parameter for the prediction of the illness. Taking into consideration

Incomplete Antibodies May Reduce ABO Cross-Match Incompatibility: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Any erythrocyte transfusion among humans having type A or B blood groups is impossible due to antibodies causing fatal transfusion complications. A cross-match test is performed to prevent immune transfusion complications before transfusion. Our hypothesis is that the fragment antibody (Fab) part of the antibody (incomplete antibody) may be used to prevent an immune stimulus related to the complete antibody. Therefore, we designed a pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of these incomplete antibodies using cross-match tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pepsin enzyme and staphylococc

Hemolytic transfusion reaction due to anti-IH.

BACKGROUND: Anti-IH is usually a clinically insignificant antibody that may complicate a serologic workup. However, it can occasionally cause hemolysis. We report a rare case of acute hemolysis caused by anti-IH. CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old man with a long history of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia and anemia, blood group A, D+ was found to have an unidentified antibody on serologic workup. He received an A, D+ red blood cell (RBC) unit that was crossmatch compatible by immunoglobulin G indirect antiglobulin test and then experienced an acute hemolytic transfusion reaction with fever, hemoglob

Immunoadsorption as a Rescue Therapy for Very High Anti-B Titer in ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplantation.

BACKGROUND ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation has been performed for several years, with the understanding that elevated antibody titers against the donor blood group are associated with a heightened risk of antibody-mediated rejection. The primary strategy for managing ABOi transplantation involves desensitization through antibody removal and the administration of rituximab. Effective methods for antibody removal include plasmapheresis, double filtration plasmapheresis, and immunoadsorption, using specialized absorbent columns. CASE REPORT The patient was a 51-year-old woman with

Overcoming limits: First ABO incompatible living donor paired kidney transplant in an hypersensitized pediatric recipient in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: HLA sensitization is a growing problem in children awaiting kidney transplantation. In some cases, finding an immunologically compatible donor entails contemplating the option of an ABO incompatible transplant or paired transplant. METHODS: Patient with genetic nephrotic syndrome and progressive chronic kidney disease, with a previous thrombosis of a first kidney transplant, resulting hypersensitized and remaining for a long-time on hemodialysis. Despite a desensitization strategy, family members were incompatible and deceased donation options must be ruled out due to the presen

Investigation of risk factors associated with erythrocyte engraftment after ABO-incompatible hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

ABO-incompatible hematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCTs) are widely practiced; however, the delay in erythrocyte engraftment can be problematic. While erythrocyte engraftment is usually indicated by an increase in reticulocyte levels without the need for erythrocyte transfusions, the disappearance of recipient-derived anti-A/B isoagglutinin and detection of donor-derived A/B antigens can also be used as other parameters. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 68 ABO-incompatible HSCTs, focusing on major and bidirectional mismatch. We analyzed known clinical risk factors associated w

ABO haemolytic disease of the newborn: Improved prediction by novel integration of causative and protective factors in newborn and mother.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prediction of haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN) caused by maternal anti-A/-B enables timely therapy, thereby preventing the development of kernicterus spectrum disorder. However, previous efforts to establish accurate prediction methods have been only modestly successful. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a case-control study, we examined 76 samples from mothers and 76 samples from their newborns; 38 with and 38 without haemolysis. The IgG subclass profile of maternal anti-A and anti-B was determined by flow cytometry. Samples from newborns were geneticall
