Asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism.

Of 118 consecutive white patients referred for asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism, the diagnosis was clinically confirmed in 100, of whom 85 adults had a serum calcium less than 3.0 mM (12 mg/dl) and no skeletal, rheumatic, or significant neuropsychiatric symptoms, azotemia, or other significant illnesses. Among these 85, 68 had both asymptomatic and medically uncomplicated hyperparathyroidism, whereas 17 had historical, radiographic, or ultrasonic evidence of renal stone disease. The 20% with past or present renal calculi concentrated their urine significantly better than the 68 others

Acute water ingestion influences lean soft tissue estimation from dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry: Implications for clinical diagnosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a common method for estimating lean soft tissue (LST), which is crucial for diagnosing skeletal muscle conditions (e.g., sarcopenia). However, the accuracy of DXA can be compromised by external factors, including acute water ingestion (AWI). While prior research indicates AWI can inflate LST measurements, the dose-response relationship and the specific impact on regional body composition such as trunk vs. appendicular LST (ALST) remain unclear. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the dose- and time-dependent effects of

Evaluating the feasibility of diffusion models for diagnosis of osteoporosis in women: A clinical diagnostic analysis of DWI, CTRW, and FROC diffusion models.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the use of diffusion MRI models for diagnosing osteoporosis in women. Traditional methods, like DXA, struggle to assess bone quality. The research found that CTRW and FROC models effectively distinguished between healthy and osteoporotic bones, offering a promising approach for bone quality assessment and fracture risk prediction. PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of the conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), continuous-time random walk (CTRW), and fractional order calculus (FROC) models for osteoporosis in women. Pseudo-osteoporosis on bone densitometry due to congenital spinal dysraphism.

A patient in his late adolescence was referred for evaluation of low and apparently declining spinal bone density on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Review of the DXA images revealed normal bone mineral density at other body sites but exceedingly low lumbar spine Z-scores which appeared to get progressively lower over time. The DXA result was explained by congenital spinal dysraphism with absent posterior spinous elements, rather than true low bone mineral content. Recognition of this structural artefact prevented unnecessary interventions. The case underscores the importance of correl

Cone Beam Computed Tomography of Bonejaws in Patients With Primary Osteoporosis: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study aimed to investigate the potential of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) parameters to identify primary osteoporosis in jawbones. RECENT FINDINGS: Early diagnosis of osteoporosis is crucial but challenging. Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is the gold standard to measure bone density, nevertheless it has limitations including cost, radiation dose, and 2D imaging. CBCT is a volumetric imaging technique commonly used in dentistry that showed promise as an alternative tool due to its high spatial resolution and excellent analysis of bone structures. Mandibular and

Pathophysiology and evaluation of bone health in adrenal diseases.

Adrenal diseases are associated with an increased risk of osteopenia/osteoporosis and fragility fractures. Although dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry remains the gold standard for assessing bone mineral density, its limitations in accurately predicting vertebral fractures underscore the need for complementary diagnostic tools, particularly in the context of adrenal disorders. Vertebral fractures, often asymptomatic, may go undetected without targeted assessments such as morphometric evaluation. Incorporating advanced diagnostic tools, such as the trabecular bone score, into the evaluation of ad

Determination of body composition by dual x-ray absorptiometry in persons with haemophilia.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research on body composition in persons with haemophilia (PwH). The literature describes an increased body fat distribution and decreased lean mass in PwH compared to healthy controls using bioimpedance analysis. Using dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which is known to be the most accurate method, this investigation aims to postulate reference data for body composition parameters within haemophilia severity phenotypes and age groups. METHODS: Persons underwent whole body DXA screening using Horizon. Body fat percentage, estimated visceral adipose tissue (VAT), app

Preliminary study on the effect of lumbar axial rotation on bone mineral density measured by DXA and QCT.

Currently, the relationship between axial rotation of the vertebrae and bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) remains controversial. The aim of this study is to quantitatively assess the effect of vertebral rotation on volumetric bone mineral density (v-BMD) and areal bone mineral density (a-BMD), further to propose the corrected strategies. To achieve this, a phantom, which was rotated from 0° to 25° in 5° increments, was utilized. Bone mineral content (BMC), a-BMD, v-BMD, and projected area (p-AREA) were measu

Lean tissue mass measurements by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and associations with strength and functional outcome measures in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a slowly progressive disease of skeletal muscle. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is a widely available, cost-effective and sensitive technique for measuring whole body and regional lean tissue mass and has been used in prior clinical trials in neuromuscular diseases. The Clinical Trial Readiness to Solve Barriers to Drug Development in FSHD (ReSolve) study is a prospective, longitudinal, observational multisite study. We obtained concurrent DEXA scans and functional outcome measurements in 185 patients with FSHD at the baseline visit. We
