Service-learning in prison settings: A qualitative study of nursing students' experiences.

AIM: To explore nursing students' perceptions of a Service-Learning (SL) experience within a Health Education module in a Spanish prison, focusing on its contribution to the development of non-clinical competencies. BACKGROUND: Community care education increasingly recognizes the value of non-traditional learning environments. Prisons represent a complex context where students confront vulnerability and social inequities. While SL integrates academic learning with community engagement, evidence on how it specifically contributes to the development of non-clinical competencies in correctional

Experiences and perceptions of occupational therapy and physiotherapy practice education in research settings.

INTRODUCTION: Practice education is an essential component of occupational therapy programmes in Australia, providing supervised opportunities for students to develop skills across diverse practice settings. Rising student enrolments have intensified pressure on universities to secure sufficient practice education opportunities, prompting exploration of alternative models and emerging settings. The research setting, with supervision provided by occupational therapists working in research roles, presents a promising but under-utilised option for practice education. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed

Psychological maltreatment, adverse childhood experiences on college students' academic procrastination: exploring the role of adult attachment and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Academic procrastination is prevalent in college students, severely impacting their academic achievement, personal growth, and psychological well-being. However, few studies have explored the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on college students’ academic procrastination and the relationship between adult attachment and resilience in this process. The present study aimed to reveal the potential mechanisms of action between ACEs and academic procrastination. METHODS: Participants were recruited from three universities in Northeast China using convenience sampling, and 9

What do the records say: Autism spectrum disorder and higher education.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) report experiencing many difficulties associated with ASD and the pursuit of higher education. This study examines 34 years of data from a large private university in the U.S., comparing students with autism who registered with disability services (n = 177) to matched neurotypical peers on several academic record variables. Results indicate that students with ASD had more failing grades, were more likely to be put on academic discipline status and demonstrated lower average GPAs than their matched peers. Interestingly, autistic students who trans

A community-focused rural academic health department model in North Carolina: elevating community engagement, rural public health practice and research.

INTRODUCTION: In decentralized public health systems, rural public health departments have fewer economic resources and higher needs for public health programs and services. This case study describes the evolution of a rural district health department's community and academic partnerships across three phases. Throughout this process, partnerships grounded in community engagement informed the local public health workforce, translated research into practice, and supported the design, implementation, and evaluation of interventions in a rural setting. METHODS: Our approach is guided by three est

Bolstering the pathway to promote scientific workforce diversity: the UCSF Mid-Career Development Program.

PROBLEM: Academic medical institutions face longstanding challenges in recruiting and retaining historically excluded, midcareer research faculty. Although progress in recruiting has been documented, retention has focused on individuals rather than a system-level approach. APPROACH: The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Mid-Career Development Program was launched in 2020 to advance and retain historically excluded research faculty (scholars) and their historically excluded mentees via a novel program that provided faculty discretionary funding of $150,000 per person over 2 years,

Research Participation During a National Educational Disruption: Insights From a Natural Experiment in Medical Education.

BACKGROUND: Immersive research experiences are widely recognized as valuable for medical students. However, opportunities for extended research are often constrained by dense curricula. In 2024, the Republic of Korea experienced an inevitable nationwide suspension of medical education for about one year, allowing some students to engage in full-time research. From this unique situation, the present study aimed to explore the medical students' motivations for research participation, their self-perceived outcomes, and the types of institutional support they have identified as necessary to ensure

This study examined the level of satisfaction with academic supervision among nursing postgraduate students in China and explored factors associated with higher satisfaction. METHODS: A national multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among nursing postgraduate students from 30 universities in China between 2 April and 30 April 2024. Exploring institutional factors of resilience in undergraduate medical training: a thematic inquiry into experiences of medical students.

BACKGROUND: Resilience is an essential attribute for medical students to manage academic demands and sustain well-being during training. While resilience has traditionally been studied at the individual level, less attention has been given to institutional factors that shape its development. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the institutional factors contributing to resilience among undergraduate medical students. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 55 participants, including 45 medical students and 10 faculty and administrative staff. Data were collected through four fo

Building Community With Community: Collaborative Reflections on the Rural and Urban Community Orienting Experience (RUCOE).

Short-term intensive orientation programs have existed at medical schools for decades, yet there is very little published on these programs and the impact they have on medical students, particularly those at the very beginning of their medical training. The annual Rural/Urban Community Orienting Experience (RUCOE) at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is a three-day immersive orientation before the start of the academic year with the goals to build community among students interested in underserved practice, faculty, and staff; foster a curious mind as a practitioner-

Medical School: Academic or Corporate Culture?

Integration between academic medical schools and health systems occurs through mergers with either private or public health system models. Such mergers can result in significant institutional cultural conflicts between academia and the corporate world, which can affect the educational and scholarship missions of the schools. One approach to evaluate institutional culture is by The Competing Values Framework, through which distinct cultural characteristics and preferences can be determined and compared. However, I posit that this framework may not fully capture the differences between the acade…
