A child's social determinants of health (SDH), including their neighborhood environment, insurance status, race and ethnicity, English language proficiency and geographic location, all significantly impact their risk of injury and outcomes after injury. Children from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods experience overall higher rates of injury and different types of injuries, including higher rates of motor vehicle-, firearm-, and violence-related injuries. Similarly, children with public insurance or no insurance, as a proxy for lower socioeconomic status, experience higher rates of

To investigate the correlation between the mechanism of an accident and the resulting injury pattern we reviewed the data of 195 prospectively documented multiply traumatized patients. Information on the accident was based on descriptions given by eye witnesses, police and the emergency medical staff. Only moderate to severe lesions (AIS > or = 3; Abbreviated Injury Scale Version 1990) of each body region were analyzed. The mean injury severity (ISS) for all these patients was 39.5 (18-75); the lethality was 34%. Different types of accidents led to various injury patterns. We found a high inci

BACKGROUND: Accidental intraneural injection induced nerve injury is an iatrogenic tragedy and intramuscular injection (IM) is the most common injury mechanism affecting the sciatic nerve. The most frequent presentation of sciatic nerve injury includes radicular pain and paresthesia with almost immediate onset of variable motor and sensory deficit.
OBJECTIVES: Intraneural injection is a common injury mechanism of the sciatic nerve and generates neuropathic pain with inflammatory neuritis. Steroids inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators and reduce ectopic discharges on damaged neural

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the associations between unintentional injuries from the perspective of parents and their children's bullying victimization. This study aimed to examine the links between parent-reported unintentional injury subtypes and student-reported experiences of bullying victimization from a school-based large-scale survey.
METHODS: A total of 30,386 students from 35 primary schools, 27 middle schools, and 6 high schools with available data on unintentional injuries, school bullying victimization, and covariates were included in this study. Multivariable and multinomia

The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence, types and severity of burn injuries, including sites involved, morbidities, operative procedures, and their outcomes, to prevent or reduce the frequency and morbidity of such injuries in epileptic patients. This retrospective study was conducted at our centre between February 2008 and January 2012. The study included 54 patients who sustained burn injuries due to epileptic seizures, accounting for 1.3% of all burn admissions. All patients, irrespective of the severity of their injuries, were admitted to our centre, assessed, treated an

OBJECTIVE: We aim to identify the incidence and the characteristics of non-accidental subdural haemorrhage in Hong Kong in children under the age of 5 years.
METHOD: Eighteen children aged below 5 years presented with subdural haemorrhage without a history of significant trauma were studied. Clinical features and the work-up process for probable child abuse were analysed.
RESULTS: Sixteen combined case conferences were held, and eleven cases were concluded to be genuine child abuse cases of non-accidental head injury (incidence=1.5 per 100,000 children <5 years old per year). Among these cas

Falls from a height usually cause blunt trauma involving multiple body regions, but penetrating injuries are relatively uncommon; they occur when a rigid object penetrates the body. This can cause catastrophic internal damage depending on the structures involved. We report a fatal case of isolated thoracic impalement in a 49-year-old man who reportedly fell from a tree onto a pointed wooden stave. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Medico-legal autopsy revealed a penetrating injury traversing the thorax from the left posterolateral chest to the right upper anterolateral chest, with

BACKGROUND: This study is based on the skeletal remains of an adult female from the ancient city of Herculaneum (Naples, Italy), who was a victim of the eruption of the nearby Vesuvius Volcano on 24-25 August, AD 79.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Examination of the maxillofacial region revealed evidence of unilateral condylar fracture and dislocation, as well as traumatic dental injuries. The injuries observed might have been the consequence of a direct blow to the mental region that was transmitted in a direction that raised the mandible, causing an indirect fracture in the right condylar neck whe

Hypothermia in combination with infection presents a complex challenge in clinical and battlefield medicine. Multifaceted physiological and immunological consequences of hypothermia drastically change the risk, progression, and treatment of a concomitant infection. Managing hypothermia and infection in extreme cold settings is particularly relevant in an era with increased risk of military operations in Polar climates. Here, we discuss the elevated instance of infection during accidental and therapeutic hypothermia and speculate how a compromised immune system may contribute. We focus on skin

Colorectal injuries caused by high-pressure air compressors are rare and reported especially among industrial workers. They may appear because of intended or accidental injury. In the present paper, we report a case of colorectal injuries due to air insufflation from a distance towards the anus with the clothes on, as a means of a practical joke. The patient presented one day after the trauma to the Emergency Department with complaints of severe abdominal pain and vomiting. On examination, he had signs of peritonitis. A computed tomography (CT) scan did not show any perforation. Emergency lapa

Case studies of freefall injuries suggest that most falls from heights result in lower extremity, pelvic, and vertebral fractures. These injuries are largely a consequence of the fact that most falls are accidental with victims landing feet first. This study investigates whether human behavioral response affects body orientation at impact and whether the human body tends to align in a particular way as a result of physical laws. The investigation was undertaken by observing nine experimental falls of an anthropomorphic dummy from a height of 65 ft (9.8 m). In all nine falls, the dummy landed h

Embolization is a well-recognized phenomenon in medicine and forensic pathology and generally involves formed blood elements, bone, air, amn … ating chain-saw-link injury as a cause of traumatic death. Most reports of chain-saw incidents cite accidental injuries to hands and arms or dramatic facial injuries due to entrapment and recoil (1,2). One fatality occurred from a skull fracture and cerebral injury when a 19-year-old man fell onto a saw.

The ingestion of caustic chemical agents, usually accidentally by children, produces a range of injury from minor mouth burns to necrosis of the esophagus and stomach. The type of agent, amount, concentration, and duration of exposure are the determining factors. The treatment of the average burn has been fairly well standardized, but the serious injuries require prompt recognition of complications and appropriate therapy.

Wrist cut exsanguination is usually suicidal, but it can also be accidental. The lack of recognition of homicide wrist cut as a differential diagnosis is exemplified by its rarity. Authors present two cases of homicide wrist cut with strikingly similar attributes. Fatal head injuries were concomitantly present in both of them. There was usage of a characteristic bondage to incapacitate the victim in one of them. These wrists-cut murders imply the involvement of a specific criminal psyche that has yet to be discovered in literature. The presence of typical features of suicide wrist cut was anot

Although they account for a small proportion of burns in paediatrics, injuries from chemicals can be just as devastating as other mechanisms of burn injury. At least 25,000 chemicals exist which can cause burns: in children, they are often caused by household chemicals via accidental exposure. The mechanism by which corrosive substances produce chemical burns highlights the importance of early and plentiful irrigation of the burn area, removal of contaminated clothes and careful clinical assessment. Surgical intervention is uncommon but often follows the principles for thermal burns. This arti

Ingested corrosive agents produce oropharyngeal and gastro-oesophageal injuries ranging from minor burns to severe necrosis, depending on the agent, amount, concentration and duration of exposure. A 10-year (1990-1999) study of 23 corrosive oesophagitis patients depicting the clinical spectrums and implications was done. There were 17 (74%) males and 6 (26%) females, with an average age of 16 years: 35% were in the first decade of life and 39% in the second, with an average occurrence of three new cases a year. The main corrosive agents were alkali (NaOH) 48% and sulphuric acid 39%. The factor
