Evidence-based psychosocial treatments for ethnic minority youth.

This article reviews research on evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for ethnic minority youth using criteria from Chambless et al. (1998), Chambless et al. (1996), and Chambless and Hollon (1998). Although no well-established treatments were identified, probably efficacious or possibly efficacious treatments were found for ethnic minority youth with anxiety-related problems, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, depression, conduct problems, substance use problems, trauma-related syndromes, and other clinical problems. In addition, all studies met either Nathan and Gorman's (2002) Type 1 or

Post-Pandemic Multidimensional Integration of Afghan Refugee Women in the U.S.

Amid the recent global refugee crisis, the United States (U.S.) hosts over 200,000 Afghan refugees, many struggling to integrate into U.S. society. The COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent health and social sequelae have severely affected Afghan refugees' lives, especially women, further complicating their integration. This study examines how the pandemic has influenced Afghan refugee women's integration through challenges and facilitators at various socio-ecological levels. Semi-structured interviews with 34 Afghan refugee women and 18 service providers in California were conducted. Interview

The Perceived Role of Family in Heroin Use Behaviors of Mexican-American Men.

The influence of the family is not well understood as it relates to drug use behaviors of Hispanic male adults. We examined the family's influence on drug use behavior, as perceived by Hispanic men who use heroin. One-time qualitative interviews were conducted with 21 current and former heroin users who participated in a larger study on long-term heroin use in Mexican-American men. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Three main themes emerged: family as a supportive environment for heroin use; heroin as a family legacy; and, the family's strategies for helping to stop using

Catastrophic stress and factors affecting its consequences among Southeast Asian refugees.

Effects on mental health of the stress of being interned in a refugee camp were assessed in a community survey of 1348 Southeast Asians. The impact on depressive mood proved significant but short-lived. Social support derived from the ethnic community and from an intact marriage moderated the risk of developing depressive symptoms, apparently by enhancing a sense of identity and belongingness. A psychological coping mechanism--avoidance of the past--buffered the impact of camp stress on depressive symptoms. While refugees brought into the country under private sponsorship were expected to have

[Persistent somatoform pain disorder in migrants from Turkey].

Migrants from Turkey face several barriers to a successful integration in Switzerland including equal access to the health care system; most important are language problems, cultural and economic barriers. According to the scientific report of the Federal Bureau of Health "Migration and Health " current forms of therapy do not fulfil the needs of this patient population. Ambulatory and in-hospital services are devoted to the acute phase of a pain disorder; they are not imbedded into the circumstances of daily living. Re-Adjusting to daily life however, is crucial for patients' attempt to retur

Changing time perspective and mental health among Southeast Asian refugees.

Little is known about the psychological mechanisms people employ in adapting to extreme circumstances such as becoming refugees. Case studies of refugees making up part of a sample of 1348 persons relocated from Southeast Asia to Vancouver, British Columbia, suggest that altering one's perception of time may be an adaptive strategy. During periods of acute stress, refugees seem to focus on the present to the relative exclusion of past and future. The reemergence of past and future into consciousness brings about a risk for developing depression. Epidemiological data corroborate inferences from

Sexual values and risky sexual behaviors among Latino youths.

CONTEXT: Understanding Latino youths' sexual values is key to informing HIV prevention efforts. Few studies have examined associations between culturally based sexual values and behaviors among Latinos. Multiple regression and multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between sexual values and behaviors, while adjusting for language use (a proxy for acculturation) and other covariates. RESULTS: The importance attached to female virginity w…
