Melanin is the major factor that determines skin color and protects from ultraviolet radiation. In present study we evaluated the anti-melanogenesis effect of acetazolamide (ACZ) using four different approaches: enzyme kinetic, in vitro, in vivo and in silico. A 42-year-old patient with cognitive deficits due to childhood meningitis suffered from recurrent episodes of familial hemiplegic migraine. BACKGROUND: Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been successfully used to treat peptic ulcers. Although carbonic anhydrase restriction does not inhibit Helicobacter pylori in vitro, recent studies suggest that carbonic anhydrase inhibition reduces the ability of H. pylori to survive in an acid environment as present in the stomach.

Two carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, acetazolamide and benzolamide, are capable of increasing the toxicity of sodium salicylate in mice. Beginning at about 2 mg/kg, each of the inhibitors, in combination with a fixed (400 mg/kg) dose of salicylate, generates a dose-mortality curve that reaches a plateau at about 60% deaths at 6 to 8 mg/kg.
