[Clinical analysis of 40 cases with sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical characters and the mode of treatment, and to analyze the prognosis of patients with sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma. METHODS: The clinical data were analyzed retrospectively in 40 patients with sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma. The characters of survival rate, local recurrence and distant metastasis in these patients were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method and Log-rank test. RESULTS: The maxillary sinus was the most common site of origin and account for 80% of all patients. Five-year and ten-year overall survival rate were 76.9% and 61.6% respectively. F

Histologic analysis of pediatric tonsil and adenoid specimens: is it really necessary?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of unexpected histologic findings in routine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy specimens. METHODS: A retrospective medical record review was performed at a tertiary care children's hospital. The pathology records of 2062 children who underwent tonsil or adenoid surgery were analyzed and the final histologic diagnosis was recorded. RESULTS: Four unexpected histologic findings were found on routine tonsil and adenoid specimens. None were clinically significant. A review of the literature shows a very low rate (0.015%) of unexpected clinically significant diag

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of sublingual gland involving the submandibular duct.

We report an unusual case of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) arising in the sublingual gland and extending into the submandibular duct. Our article mainly describes the MR findings. The margin of the mass was well-defined and the mass was divided into two parts - anterior and posterior. The anterior part of the mass showed isointense to surrounding muscle on T(1) weighted images and hyperintense on fat-saturated T(2) weighted images. The posterior part of the mass showed hyperintense both on T(1) weighted and fat-saturated T(2) weighted images. The findings indicated that the cystic space of th

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the oropharynx. Brachytherapy for the treatment of local recurrences].

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinomas are rare tumours. Regional lymphatic spread is rather uncommon. Distant metastases occur in approximately half of all patients. High local failure rates of up to 50% after surgery have been reported. Even after adjuvant radiation, the results remain poor for locally advanced tumours after incomplete resection. We report on a safe and effective salvage option in the treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 44 year old woman with the diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the oropharynx and simultaneous pulmonary metastases received a m

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx. A case report and review of the literature].

UNLABELLED: Cylindroma of the head and neck, known as "cystic adenoid carcinoma", begins more often at the expense of the all glandular structures of ectodermic origin, in particularly at the minor and principal salivary glands. However the laryngeal localization is rare, by way of the low distribution of the accessory glands at this level. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical characteristics; anatomo-pathologic, treatment and results together with a review of the literature. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We report the case a 49 years old patient, without particular antecedent, and wither a sub-glottis t

Human papilloma virus in hyperplastic tonsillar and adenoid tissues in children.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) in childhood causes skin and anogenital warts as well as the recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, a life-threatening cause of upper airway obstruction in children. To date, the information on HPV infection in tonsillar and adenoid hyperplasia in children is limited. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of HPV DNA in children with benign tonsillar and/or adenoid hyperplasia. METHODS: One hundred six samples of paraffin-embedded adenoid and/or tonsillar tissues from 102 children, 57 girls and 45 boys (age range, 2-14 years),

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: truly uncommon or easily overlooked?

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast is an uncommon histologic form of breast cancer, comprising in most series less than 1% of all mammary cancers. Due to the rarity, little information about its presentation on image studies has been noted in the literature. Here we report two additional cases with emphasis on the intriguing image presentations. CASE ONE: A 67-year-old woman came to our clinic with the chief complaint of mastodynia. No obvious palpable mass of breast was found on physical examination. Mammography showed a small well-defined nodule in the medial part of the lef

Expression of epidermal growth factor in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

This study used an immunohistochemical technique to assess the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in 40 specimens of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), 7 specimens of labial glands adjacent to mucocele, and 5 specimens of normal submandibular glands. In normal submandibular glands, immunohistochemically detectable EGF was demonstrated in all ductal segments, including intercalated, striated, and excretory duct cells. No EGF positive staining was found in acinar compartments. including serous and mucous acinar cells. In degenerated labial glands adjacent to mucocele, no EGF stain

Adenoid cystic carcinoma metastatic to the dura: report of two cases.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) originating in the salivary and lacrimal glands usually spreads to the intracranial space by following cranial nerves into the cavernous sinus, temporal bone and cerebellopontine angle. We present two cases in which ACC metastasized extensively to the dura, suggesting that ACC has an affinity for the dura. Case 1, a 43-year-old man, was operated on 12 years earlier for invasive ACC of the right palate. He experienced recurrence of the tumor in the left cavernous sinus and sella, and extensive involvement of the dura of both right and left temporal fossae. Case 2,

Concentrations of azithromycin in tonsilar and/or adenoid tissue from paediatric patients.

Azithromycin levels in tonsillar and/or adenoid tissue were determined in children (1.6-7.5 years old) who were scheduled for surgical removal of their tonsils and/or adenoids. The children received azithromycin oral suspension 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days. Tissue samples were obtained during surgery 1 (n = 4), 2 (n = 5), 4 (n = 6), or 8 (n = 5) days after the last dose of azithromycin. Serum samples were also obtained from four children in each of these groups at the time of surgery. Mean tissue concentrations of azithromycin were 10.33 +/- 3.01, 7.21 +/- 4.04, 9.30 +/- 3.74 and 1.49 +/- 0.…

[Intra-mandibular location of a adenoid cystic carcinoma. Review of the literature].

An update review of the published data (13 références) concerning primary central mandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma is presented. Those tumors are exceptionally located within mandible: the diagnostic could be evocated in case of body or angle radiolucency of the mandible. The most frequent diagnosis appeared to be an osteolytic odontogenic cyst. Surgical analysis has shown a very friable and low density solid tumor next to mandibular nerve. This pathology has a quiet and long term development (mainly pulmonary metastasis many years later). The best treatment consisted in bone resection. Eve

[Cystic adenoid carcinoma. Apropos of a case with very prolonged survival].

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is an infrequent tumor, but not a rare one. Its primary location is most often the salivary glands, although it can be found in many other organs, including the lung, which is the most frequent site of remote metastasis. The tumor's two main features, which indicate a need for long-term monitoring, are 1) its high level of local aggressivity and rate of recidivism in spite of radical excision, with recurrence sometimes taking place long after the primary tumor appears, and 2) its slow natural history even when disseminated disease is present. Type of tumoral tissue is

Cor pulmonale secondary to tonsillar and adenoidal hypertrophy: management considerations.

Eleven cases of cor pulmonale secondary to tonsil and adenoid hypertrophy and upper airway obstruction were reviewed. These patients presented with a spectrum disease ranging from mild, with only abnormal ECG or chest X-ray findings, to severe with hypercarbia, hypoxia, and right heart failure. One patient with severe disease suffered a postoperative respiratory arrest. We have successfully managed 4 patients with severe cor pulmonale with postoperative intubation and assisted ventilation. Hypoxia is the driving stimulus for respiration in patients with upper airway obstruction and hypercarbia
