Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms Among Children in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study: Clinical, Cognitive, and Brain Connectivity Correlates.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCSs) are common and can be an early risk marker for obsessive-compulsive disorder. The Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study provides a unique opportunity to characterize OCSs in a large normative sample of school-age children and to explore corticostriatal and task-control circuits implicated in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder. METHODS: The ABCD Study acquired data from 9- and 10-year-olds (N = 11,876). Linear mixed-effects models probed associations between OCSs (Child Behavior Checklist) and cognition (NIH Tool

Parent versus child report of children's sexual orientation: associations with psychiatric morbidity in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

PURPOSE: We sought to document the association between parent's report and their child's report of the child's sexual orientation and associations between this agreement/disagreement and the child's psychiatric morbidity. METHODS: Data were drawn from 11,565 parent-child dyads who completed the baseline assessment of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (2016-2018; children ages 9-10 years). Whether the child was "gay or bisexual" was asked separately of parent and child. We created four categories: (1) Concordant No; (2) Discordant: Parent Yes/Maybe, Child No/Unclear; (3) Discord

Protocol for a multicenter prospective cohort study evaluating sport activity and development of femoroacetabular impingement in the adolescent hip.

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is an important cause of hip pain in young and active individuals and occurs as a result of size and shape mismatch between the femoral head and acetabulum. Open physes in children can make hips more susceptible to injury, and high impact forces have been suggested to affect the developing femur. The diagnosis of FAI has recently risen, especially within adolescent populations, and there is an increasing trend towards year-round participation in sports with early specialization. The PREVIEW study is an international longitudinal study designed to

Model-Informed Drug Development Approach Supporting Approval of Adalimumab (HUMIRA) in Adolescent Patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa: a Regulatory Perspective.

On October 16, 2018, FDA expanded the adalimumab dosing regimen to adolescent hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) patients 12 years and older, weighing at least 30 kg without new clinical data. This approval was mainly supported by the model-informed drug development approach. Population pharmacokinetic simulations suggest body weight-tiered dosing regimens in adolescent patients will achieve similar exposure to adult patients across all weight range. Adalimumab has a well-established, 16-year long-term safety profile in various diseases in adult and pediatric populations. Current data of adalimumab

Raising Children with Poor School Performance: Parenting Styles and Short- and Long-Term Consequences for Adolescent and Adult Development.

This study examines the correlates of authoritative (warmth and strictness), indulgent (warmth but not strictness), authoritarian (strictness but not warmth), and neglectful (neither warmth nor strictness) parenting with short- and long-term socialization outcomes in adolescents and adults, with and without poor school performance during adolescence. Short- and long-term socialization outcomes were captured by multidimensional self-esteem (academic/professional, emotional, and family), psychological maturity (self-competence, social competence, and empathy), and emotional maladjustment (nervou

The relentless past: The effect of chronic sexual abuse in childhood on fifty years of adolescent and adult development.

Four sisters, now in their late fifties and early sixties, were sexually abused during childhood over a four-year span by the same priest. Until recently they told no one about their experience and never received any psychological diagnostic evaluations or treatment. The author conducted detailed psychiatric evaluations of each of the four women while serving as the plaintiffs' expert witness during their lawsuits against the Catholic Church. The suits have been settled, and the women have given written permission to tell their stories. This unique clinical material provides a rare opportunity

Stability and transitions in positive youth development profiles among adolescents: The role of interpersonal relationships.

Adolescence is a period of significant developmental plasticity, offering opportunities to foster positive strengths. Research has suggested that positive youth development (PYD) varies across individuals and cultures; however, there is still limited understanding of how PYD evolves over time, particularly in non-Western cultural contexts. To address this gap, the current study employed latent profile analysis and latent transition analysis to identify distinct PYD profiles, examine transitions between profiles, and investigate the predictive roles of interpersonal relationships. A total of 16

Lean mass development trajectories in children and adolescents and their associations with musculoskeletal health in emerging adulthood.

This study identified longitudinal trajectories of lean mass development from childhood to young adulthood and examined their associations with bone and muscle outcomes in early adulthood. Data were obtained from 323 participants (8-23 years) in the Iowa Bone Development Study, assessed at 7 time points. Lean mass trajectories were defined using DXA-derived Z-scores for the appendicular lean mass index (aLBMI) and the appendicular lean mass to trunk fat mass ratio (aLBM/TrFM), categorized as low, average, or high. Only participants with consistent trajectories were included (n=116 for aLBMI; n

The relationship between fear of missing out on social developments in adolescents and loneliness and social anxiety.

This study aims to examine the relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO) in social settings, loneliness, and social anxiety among adolescents in Turkey. The sample consisted of 456 high school students. Data were collected using an "information form," the "fear of missing out on developments in social environments scale," the "UCLA loneliness scale-short form (UCLA-SF)," and the "social anxiety for adolescents (SAS-A) scale." Data analysis involved the use of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, One-Way ANOVA, correlation, and simple linear regression analysis. The findings r

Co-Development of Parenting, Self-Confidence, and Internalizing Problems From Adolescence to Emerging Adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive research linking parenting with adolescent adjustment, relatively little longitudinal research has examined how developmental changes in adolescents' perceptions of parenting, self-confidence, and internalizing problems are linked across the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood. METHODS: Five-wave longitudinal data were drawn from the Korean Youth Panel Survey (N = 3188; mean age at Time 1 = 14.16 years, SD = 0.37), following participants from Grade 9 through Grade 12 and 1 year after high school graduation. Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and the Development of Multiple Risk Behaviors in Adolescence: A Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom has the fourth highest estimated prevalence globally of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy (41%). It is therefore important to understand the long-term impacts of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) by examining its impact on the development of adolescent multiple risk behaviors (MRBs) that may increase morbidity and premature mortality across the life-course. METHODS: Using Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort data with multiple imputation (n = 6752), we examined the impacts of "infrequent," "frequent," and "binge" PAE groups o

Standardized multidisciplinary care for children and adolescents with differences of sex development: a health intelligence approach.

BACKGROUND: Since long-term outcome data for individuals with differences of sex development (DSD) remain limited, current consensus statements emphasize the need for standardized, longitudinal, multidisciplinary care, and systematic outcome evaluation to improve healthcare delivery and research for this heterogeneous and rare group of conditions. AIM: To describe the design and implementation of a structured, multidisciplinary follow-up program for children and adolescents with DSD in a tertiary care setting, integrating a health intelligence approach to facilitate data-driven care and resea

Cluttering in Children and Adolescents: Speech Motor Development, Neurocognitive Mechanisms, and Allied Health Implications.

Background/Objectives: Cluttering in childhood and adolescence is characterised by unstable speech timing, excessive coarticulation, irregular rate and reduced intelligibility, yet the developmental mechanisms underpinning these behaviours remain partially understood. This review synthesises empirical and conceptual evidence to examine cluttering through the lenses of speech motor development, neurocognitive mechanisms, task demands and allied-health practice. Four research questions guided the review, focusing on motor characteristics, developmental and neurocognitive mechanisms, task depende

Early parenting is associated with the development of neural reward responsiveness from childhood through adolescence.

Reward responsiveness plays an important role in promoting health and well-being in youth. Understanding associations between early experiences and variation in the typical developmental trajectory of reward responsiveness is essential to identifying potential pathways to health. We examined developmental trajectories of the reward positivity, a neurophysiological indicator of reward responsiveness, across 4 assessments in late childhood through late adolescence in 465 youth. We estimated growth curves and assessed parenting, observed via parent-child interactions, and stress exposure at age 3
