Social, psychological and physical consequences of pathological gambling reported by 42 pathological gamblers recruited mainly by advertising were compared with data on 63 pathological gamblers identified by case-finding within districts of probation, in- and out-patient psychiatric care and social welfare authorities. The two studies gave similar results. Financial breakdown, impaired relations with family and friends, and psychological problems occurred in about 50% of the pathological gamblers. In this case study report of an infant with metabolic alkalosis, the healthcare team worked to discover the cause of the illness. They found that well-meaning parents had diluted their newborn's powdered formula with electrolyte-enhanced water. Electrolyte balance in the newborn is reviewed in this article, along with information about enhanced waters. It is essential that nurses working with new families be aware that heavily advertised enhanced waters could be used unknowingly by parents for their newborns, and that the consequences could be dire.

PURPOSE: This study, conducted as part of the Keep It Up! (KIU!) 3.0 trial, compares the implementation costs of 2 strategies-centralized direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing and decentralized distribution through community-based organizations (CBO)-in delivering an evidence-based online HIV prevention program.
METHODS: We conducted interviews and collected data to identify and quantify all costs for both delivery strategies. Costs were then categorized into start-up and ongoing (time-dependent and variable) costs and assigned dollar values based on established microcosting protocols.

The article examines science and technology communication aimed at a non-specialized audience, using the general press as the main source in this endeavor to capture an image of the popularization of science in Portugal. Based on the fact that the nineteenth-century press was overtly concerned with garnering an audience and spreading knowledge, the study uses news, articles, and advertisements about the 1853-1856 cholera epidemic to assess the era's scientific knowledge (especially about prevention and treatment) and how this information was conveyed to society and used by it.

Potentially, imaging of the carpal tunnel may expand our understanding of the pathogenesis of CTS. Future studies should correlate imaging results with the patients' clinical status and results of electrodiagnostic tests. Canal pressure studies are not clinically routine, but a research study correlating canal pressure with canal appearance might be of interest. The diagnostic accuracy of imaging studies needs further clinical validation. Currently, it is premature to promote or advertise carpal tunnel imaging as a diagnostic modality for CTS.
