Subcortical regulation of cortical development: some effects of early, selective deprivations.

Selective deprivations, such as the lack of sensory input, of social contacts and of language during the critical (sensitive) period of brain development have profound consequences for the structure and function of the adult brain. The field is largely uncharted since only the consequences of the most severe forms of deprivation are known, and that too only in a few systems. It is similarly unknown if the opposite of deprivation, selective over-stimulation in development, which appears to enhance the acquisition of certain skills, for example musical skills, has collateral deprivation-like eff

Regulation of cough by secondary sensory inputs.

We have reviewed the role of afferent inputs and blood chemical changes to the central nervous system, and the way in which they modify the cough and expiration reflexes (CR and ER). Slowly adapting pulmonary stretch receptors (SARs) augment the CR, insofar as when their activity is abolished the CRs from the tracheobronchial (TB) tree and larynx are abolished or weakened. However, stimulation of SARs by lung inflation has an inconsistent effect on the CR. Activation of SARs strongly potentiates the ER from the vocal folds, by a reflex mechanism, and inhibition of SARs weakens the ER. Bronchop

[Postoperative ileus: part I (Experimental results)].

Postoperative gastro-intestinal motility disorders are of major importance for patient management following abdominal surgery both for clinical and economic reasons. In recent years, new pathophysiological links have been identified that contribute to postoperative ileus. The activation of sympathetic efferent neurons by visceral afferent nerve fibers, catecholamines, the stimulation of beta 3 -receptors in the gut wall, an inflammatory response of the gut wall with the consecutive release of nitric oxide, and opioids given for postoperative analgesia seem to be of major importance regarding t

Evaluation of a proprioception pathway in patients with stable and unstable shoulders with somatosensory cortical evoked potentials.

Histologic studies have documented the presence of mechanoreceptors in the glenohumeral ligaments, capsule, and labrum; however, direct evidence of an intact afferent electrical pathway originating in structures in the shoulder is lacking. Because somatosensory cortical evoked potentials are transmitted by way of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and carry proprioceptive information, this technique can be easily applied to evaluate the potential proprioceptive function of various intraarticular structures for shoulder stability. Patients have somatosensory cortical evoked potentials monito

Role of laryngeal afferents in cough.

The superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) is the main source of laryngeal afferent activity. A clear respiratory modulation can be noted when recording from the peripheral cut end of this nerve in several mammalian species. This modulation is due to three types of sensory endings: cold, pressure and 'drive' receptors. Although respiratory-modulated receptors play an important role in the function of the upper airway, they are not generally viewed as a primary factor in the elicitation of cough. Other more likely candidates for this role are thought to be the so-called 'irritant' endings. These are re

Different climbing fibres innervate separate dendritic regions of the same Purkinje cell in hypogranular cerebellum.

Electrophysiological experiments have shown that in hypogranular cerebella the Purkinje cells are innervated by several climbing fibres. The aim of this paper is to provide morphological evidence for this multiple innervation and to describe the topographical distribution of the different climbing fibres onto the somadendritic region of the Purkinje cell. Experiments have been performed in hypogranular adult Wistar rats lesioned during the first postnatal week by methylazoxymethanol (MAM) or by X-irradiation. Purkinje cells were labelled by an anti-calbindin antibody, whereas climbing fibres w

[Effect of an acute lesion on afferent reactions of the stomach and duodenum].

By recording the evoked potentials in the cortex and thalamic nuclei, afferent reactions of gastroduodenal components were studied early after acute gastroduodenal lesion in acute feline experiments. A model of acute ulcer in various gastric portions and the duodenal bulb gave rise to inhibition of their afferentation. This phenomenon was most pronounced in pyloric ulcer. It is concluded that the inhibition of the afferent reactions of gastroduodenal components in early periods after their acute lesion is a specific protective reaction of the viscera and appears mainly at the intraorgan level.

Formation of new sensory cells in deafferented tuberous organs of the gymnotid fish Eigenmannia virescens.

The cutaneous electroreceptor "tuberous organs" of the lateral line system of Eigenmannia virescens were studied at light and electron microscopic levels with immunohistochemical and autoradiographic techniques after sectioning of the posterior branch of the lateral line nerve. After deafferentation total degeneration of the sensory cells was observed. The accessory cells of the basal platform, however, remain intact and undergo a process of differentiation. The cytoplasms and nuclei of these cells increase in volume, and the nuclei incorporate tritiated thymidine. In control tuberous organs w

The quantitative relationship between olfactory axons and mitral/tufted cells in developing Xenopus with partially deafferented olfactory bulbs.

Partial deafferentation of the olfactory bulb in Xenopus embryos was performed to analyze the effects of afferent innervation on the development of the central olfactory structure. In an attempt to analyze a possible early inductive role of the olfactory axons, one olfactory placode was removed before differentiation of the neural tube began (stages 26-31). A morphological and quantitative analysis was performed on larvae at the onset of metamorphic climax (stage 58). When the single olfactory nerve innervated one side of the rostral telencephalon, a single olfactory bulb developed on that sid

Trigeminal afferences implied in the triggering or inhibition of sneezing in cats.

The aim of this study was to precise the role of the different trigeminal nerve branches involved in innervation of the nostril in triggering the sneeze reflex. Electrical stimulation of the anterior ethmoidal, posterior nasal and infraorbital nerves was performed in anaesthetized cats. Stimulation of these 3 nerves produced sneezing identical to that induced by mechanical stimulation. Our results emphasize inhibition of the sneeze reflex related to stimulation of the anterior ethmoidal or the posterior nasal nerves by stimulation of the infraorbital nerve.

[Dynamic properties of the reflex to muscle stretching].

The stretch and unloading reflexes were studied on extensor muscles of the hindlimb of decerebrated cats. It had been shown that nonlinear properties of the muscle dynamics were transformed under the reflex control and hysteresis inherent in the muscle itself was not removed by the stretch reflex. Hysteresis of the stretch reflex led to uncertainty of the equilibrium value of the muscle length and the equilibrium length depended on the movement prehistory. Stiffness of the muscle lengthening was shown to depend on the point of change in the movement direction. The observed nonlinearity of the

A quantitative study of the distribution of neurons projecting to the precentral motor cortex in the monkey (M. fascicularis).

The relative numbers and locations of neurons projecting to the "forelimb" region of the precentral motor cortex were studied in three monkeys by using the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase. Within the forelimb area of the motor cortex itself, there are extensive and profuse interconnections. However, regions within this area receive afferents from very few neurons in other parts of the motor cortex representing hindlimb or head movements. Most of the motor cortical representation of the forelimb in the anterior bank of the central sulcus is devoid of callosal connections. In both

Distribution of myelinated nerves in ascending nerves and myenteric plexus of cat colon.

The parts of the colon differ in motor function and in responses to extrinsic and intrinsic nerve stimulation. The distribution of myelinated nerve fibers in the colonic myenteric plexus is not known. Because these fibers might be largely extrinsic in origin, their distribution might indicate the domain of influence of extrinsic nerves and help to explain the different behaviors of the different parts of the colon. Myelinated fibers were examined by electron microscopy in cross sections of the ascending nerves and in myelin-stained whole-mount preparations in the colon. The ascending nerves ar

The organization of capsaicin-sensitive visceral afferent systems.

It has become clear that a number of neuropeptides are found in sensory nerves, some of which have been identified in visceral afferents. The best studied peptide is substance P, which has been localized in a population of capsaicin-sensitive visceral afferents. It has been established that there are a varied proportion of substance P-containing afferents in different visceral structures. In general, the peripheral termination of these nerves is around blood vessels. The central terminations of visceral afferents are in laminae I and V in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Substance P has bee

Somatosensory evoked potentials in lacunar syndromes of pure motor and ataxic hemiparesis.

Syndromes of hemiparetic lacunar infarction include pure motor hemiparesis and ataxic hemiparesis. Twelve such patients were evaluated with somatosensory evoked potentials. Potentials were delayed or absent in all 4 patients with ataxic hemiparesis and in 1 of 8 patients with pure motor hemiparesis. Unlike pure motor hemiparesis, ataxic hemiparesis appears to be associated with abnormal somatosensory evoked potentials. These abnormalities suggest that disturbance of afferent pathways are important in ataxic hemiparesis.

Mosaic architecture of the somatic sensory-recipient sector of the cat's striatum.

The striatum is known to have a compartmental organization in which histochemically defined zones called striosomes form branched 3-dimensional labyrinths embedded within the surrounding matrix. We explored how fiber projections from cortical somatic sensory areas representing cutaneous and deep-receptor inputs are organized in relation to this striatal architecture. Areas SI and 3a were mapped electrophysiologically, and distinguishable anterograde tracers (wheat germ agglutinin-HRP and 35S-methionine) were injected into physiologically identified loci. Primary somatic sensory corticostriatal

[Isolated sensory deficit of 1 side of the body as a result of a hematoma of the pons].

In a patient with a history of sudden onset of an isolated sensory syndrome of the right side of the body the sensory deficit was exclusively related to lemniscal sensitivity. NMR imaging showed a small hemorrhage in the left paramedian portion of the pontine tegmentum, corresponding precisely to the location of the median lemniscus.

Vibrotactile stimulation for intersystemic reorganization in the treatment of apraxia of speech.

Intersystemic reorganization in the treatment of apraxia of speech involves pairing fragments of a speech motor program with internal cues generated by some other, more intact system. Gestural reorganization, pairing speech with limb gestures, somehow provides an organizational framework for the proper sequencing of motor speech movements. This paper briefly develops some hypotheses suggesting that afference resulting from limb movements rather than a central movement program is involved in gestural reorganization, and that vibrotactile stimulation may have advantages over visual or auditory m

Effects of chronic deafferentation on adrenergic ganglion cells and small intensely fluorescent cells.

To determine the reaction of adrenergic ganglion cells and small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells to chronic deafferentation, catecholamine fluorescence of the major pelvic ganglion (MPG) of the rat has been studied following section of the hypogastric nerve, pelvic nerve and sympathetic trunk. Only minor changes occurred following section of the hypogastric nerve; the fluorescence surrounding a few adrenergic ganglion cells became brighter. In contrast, pelvic neurectomy resulted in the appearance of numerous varicose fibres and an increase in the fluorescent intensity of fibres enclosing ma

Vagal representation in the cerebellum of the cat.

The cervical vagus nerve (VN) was electrically stimulated in Nembutal-anaesthetized cats. The responses recorded from the cerebellar surface were found in lob. V and VI in a bilateral sagittal strip perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the folia. At a longer latency, potentials were also found in the paramedian lobule. Field potential analysis confirmed the existence of a sagittal strip in the deep parts of the lobules. The distribution of these potentials and their field potential profiles indicate that they are transmitted through the climbing fiber (CF) system. Experiments with local a
