A new surgical approach has been developed to optimize the preservation of the gingival margin and papillae when treating periodontal defects. The flap is raised by one mucosal incision far away from the marginal tissues. This case series reports on the effectiveness of a nonincised surgical approach (NIPSA) in conjunction with a hydroxyapatite-based graft biomaterial and enamel matrix derivative in treating intrabony defects. Ten defects in 10 patients were treated. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 18 months (mean: 10.8 ± 4.7 months). Probing pocket depth was 9.6 ± 2.3 mm before surgery

It is known that mouthwashes can influence gingivitis; however, their role in the three different kinds of periodontitis is unclear. Some solutions have demonstrated some effect on necrotising periodontitis, yet none have been shown to influence early onset periodontitis. The literature provides us with a wide range of in vitro concentrations of substances used pure or in various mixtures in mouthwashes. Although only a few solutions can be used in a curative approach, most mouthwashes represent an essential tool in prophylaxis and thus also in post-periodontal treatment (maintenance phase). H

The aim of this study was to compare the distribution of plasma cells within the soft tissue walls of interdental deep pockets from patients with adult (AP) and juvenile/post-juvenile (JP/PJP) periodontitis. Biopsies from 20 patients and 3 control volunteers were examined: 5 with treated AP, 5 with untreated AP, 5 with treated JP/PJP and 5 with untreated JP/PJP. No plasma cells were seen within the epithelium from any of the biopsies examined, and they were very sparse within the connective tissue from the control specimens. In all the pathological specimens examined there was marked tissue de

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of periodontal disease on quality of life using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) 14, simplified vers … e, functional limitation was the predominant item, affecting 91.5% of the sample. The patients with aggressive periodontitis achieved the highest impact scores. The highest scores on the OHIP-14 index were those of patients with a diagnosis of chronic or aggressive periodontitis. OHIP-14 scores were associated with sex, age, and income (P < .001).
CONCLUSION: Functional …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Periodontitis is an infectious disease, but the specific mechanisms by which tooth-supportive tissues are lost remain obscure. This article proposes an infectious disease model for periodontitis in which herpesviral-bacterial interactions assume a major etiopathogenic role.
RECENT FINDINGS: Epstein-Barr virus type 1, cytomegalovirus and other herpesviruses occur at a high frequency in aggressive periodontitis lesions. Also, herpesvirus-infected periodontitis lesions tend to harbor elevated levels of classic periodontopathic bacteria, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, Dial…

BACKGROUND: Intraoral radiographs can aid in formulating a more accurate diagnosis of periodontal disease. However, it must be considered whether a comparable amount of information can be obtained with modern panoramic radiographs. The aim of this study was to determine to what degree the diagnosable amount of bone loss in patients with aggressive periodontitis or severe chronic periodontitis depends on the type of x-ray technique used.
METHODS: A total of 110 subjects (63 females) were included in this study. The inclusion criteria were the diagnosis of aggressive periodontitis (N = 49) or s…

Periodontal diseases are a group of infectious diseases that mainly include gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the most prevalent form of periodontal disease in subjects of all ages, including children and adolescents. Less frequent types of periodontal disease include aggressive periodontitis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and various diseases of herpesviral and fungal origin. This review aimed to retrieve relevant information from Latin America on the prevalence of periodontal diseases among children and adolescents of the region. Gingivitis was detected in 35% of young La…

Fourteen subjects were examined for lactoferrin content in PMNs of venous blood. Eight of the subjects were diagnosed localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) and four adult periodontitis (AP), all having subgingival occurrence of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A.a.). Two subjects had healthy gingival conditions and no detectable A.a. Deficiency or low PMN lactoferrin amounts were found in six of the eight subjects with LJP and in two of the subjects with AP. The reduced lactoferrin content in the PMNs was suggested to be depending on a cytotoxic factor produced by A.a. adding to an intri

Since periodontal diseases are mainly of bacterial origin, the use of antibiotics could seem justified for their treatment. Numerous studies, however, have shown that these drugs are not a first choice treatment for acute and chronic periodontitis. Chemotherapy can represent a valuable adjunct to routine mechanical debridement, particularly for adult recurrent periodontitis, juvenile periodontitis and rapidly progressive periodontitis. Furthermore, prophylactic chemotherapy should be provided for patients at risk with systemic diseases, notably when congenital or acquired valvular heart defect
