Response to alcohol in females with a paternal history of alcoholism.

RATIONALE: Several studies have demonstrated that males with a family history of alcoholism (FHP) show less of a response to alcohol (e.g. lower ratings of intoxication) than males without a family history of alcoholism (FHN). The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if FHP females also showed a reduced sensitivity to alcohol compared to FHN females. OBJECTIVES: To determine if FHP females (n=16) were less sensitive to the subjective effects and performance-impairing effects of alcohol compared to FHN females (n=16). METHODS: The effects of placebo and alcohol (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 g/kg,…

Comorbidity of phobic disorders with alcoholism in a Canadian community sample.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relation between phobic disorders and alcoholism in a Canadian community sample. METHOD: Data came from the Mental Health Supplement of the Ontario Health Survey. The University of Michigan revision of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (UM-CIDI) was used to diagnose DSM-III-R psychiatric disorders in 8116 Canadian respondents between ages 15 and 64 years. Since the cross-system agreement (ICD-10 and DSM-III-R or DSM-IV) on the diagnosis of alcohol abuse is much lower than that for alcohol dependence, we also examined a WHO category, "hazardous alcohol…

Gender and peripheral neuropathy in chronic alcoholism: a clinical-electroneurographic study.

In some alcohol-related pathologies of chronic alcoholism women are more vulnerable than men. A consecutive sample of 62 chronic alcoholics was studied, 18 females and 44 males, aged between 28 and 69 years to assess the incidence and distribution of peripheral neuropathy with regard to gender. All patients underwent clinical and neurological observations, laboratory tests, and electroneurography. Total lifetime dose of ethanol (TLDE) and other risk factors for neuropathy (disease duration, age, nutritional status) were calculated and correlated to sural nerve sensory-evoked potential (SEP) am…

Relationship of child psychopathology to parental alcoholism and antisocial personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the contributions of familial factors, including parental diagnoses of alcoholism and/or antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), to the risk of developing various child psychiatric diagnoses. METHOD: Four hundred sixty-three children and their biological parents were interviewed with adult and child versions of the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism. Demographic and psychiatric data were compared across 3 groups of children on the basis of the presence of parental alcoholism and ASPD (no other parental diagnoses were examined). Generalized estimat…

Tests of executive functioning predict scores on the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale.

1. Previous work reported that tests of executive functioning (EF) predict the risk of alcoholism in subject populations selected for a "high density" of a family history of alcoholism and/or the presence of sociopathic traits. The current experiment examined the ability of EF tests to predict the risk of alcoholism, as measured by the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC), in outpatient subjects referred to a general neuropsychological testing service. 2. Sixty-eight male and female subjects referred for neuropsychological testing were assessed for their past drinking histories and administered th…

Hepatic and other medical disorders of alcoholism: from pathogenesis to treatment.

The medical risks of moderate and excessive alcohol consumption are reviewed. Current knowledge of metabolism of alcohol, including effects of moderate amounts, on hepatic metabolism and toxicity is summarized, with an evaluation of the relationship between the level of consumption and its effects on nutrients (including retinoids, carotenoids and folate), liver disease and other medical complications of alcoholism, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Putative benefits are also considered. Promising therapeutic approaches evolving from newly gained insight in the pathogenesis of medi…

Alcohol expectancies: effects of gender, age, and family history of alcoholism.

To explore the effects of gender, age, and positive (FH+) and negative (FH-) family history of alcoholism on alcohol-related expectancies, the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire (AEQ) was administered to 627 college students (female n = 430). In an attempt to control for consumption effects, only individuals who described themselves as heavy drinkers were included in the study. A 2 (Family History) x 2 (Gender) x 2 (Age Range) multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted on the six scales of the AEQ. Results indicated that FH+ females under the age of 20 years reported stronger expec…

Alcoholism in Brazil--the role of personality and susceptibility to stress.

One hundred alcohol-dependent Brazilian males were investigated in relation to variables dealing with the course of alcoholism, family history and behaviour. Seven of the most representative were standardized and then subjected to a factor analysis. The factors thus obtained were afterwards included in a cluster analysis, which identified three groups of alcoholics. Two of these groups agree with those established on recent previous classifications, while the third revealed a characteristic not identified in these typologies: lower levels of stress. Other distinctive features were lower scores…

Bulimia nervosa with and without alcoholism: a comparative study in Japan.

To characterize females with bulimia nervosa and alcoholism, this study compared the social and family backgrounds, as well as the clinical symptoms of alcoholics with bulimia and patients with bulimia only. The subjects were 22 Japanese female patients with both bulimia nervosa and alcoholism; the comparison group comprised 22 age-matched female patients with bulimia nervosa but without alcoholism. Patients with both bulimia and alcoholism had more borderline personality disorders and pathological symptoms such as stealing, suicide attempts, and liver injuries than the nonalcoholic comparison…

Meta-analysis of P300 amplitude from males at risk for alcoholism.

The P3(00) event-related brain potential (ERP) is used to study the development of alcoholism by comparing males who have a positive family history of alcoholism with control Ss who have no such familial history. Meta-analysis indicated that overall, smaller P3 amplitudes were obtained from males with family histories of alcoholism compared to controls. Moderator analysis indicated that paradigms using difficult visual tasks yielded the most reliable effects. Furthermore, no differences in outcomes were obtained among studies that recruited positive family history Ss exclusively from among ind…

An intervention to improve the assessment of alcoholism by practicing physicians.

OBJECTIVE: Alcoholism is estimated to affect at least 10% of American adults. Despite the fact that early diagnosis is possible and early treatment can prevent great suffering, American physicians typically diagnose and treat alcoholism less than half the time. Several authors have suggested additional physician education as a possible way to improve alcoholism assessment skills and increase the diagnosis rate. METHODS: A baseline audit, an educational intervention, and a post-intervention audit were done with physicians and nurse practitioners in an urban family practice group, using informa…
