Calcium alginate aerogels doped with polypyrrole/titanium dioxide nanoparticles for photodegradation of congo red dye.

Generally, semiconductor photocatalyst can only absorbed ultraviolet light and easily reunited in the using process, which affected their catalytic efficiency. In this work, the calcium alginate/polypyrrole/titanium dioxide (CA/PPy/TiO2) aerogel was prepared to photodegrade Congo red (CR) dye. The sensitization of TiO2 with PPy enabled energy absorption in visible light. The X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) result confirmed hydrogen bonds between PPy and TiO2 proving tight combination between them. Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectrum verified optical band gap narrowing of PPy/Ti

A dual modification approach for high-strength, and waterproof 3D printed fish gelatin-alginate tableware.

The pervasive use of disposable plastic tableware, often ending up in landfills or natural environments after consumption, poses significant ecological and human health risks. To address this challenge, we developed an environmentally friendly, food-safe composite material with robust mechanical strength and water resistance to replace conventional plastics. This study utilizes fish processing byproducts to fabricate a gelatin‑sodium alginate (FG-SA) composite, which was shaped into tableware precursors via 3D printing. A two-step modification strategy was employed: First, ethanol treatment at

Zein/ferulic acid/sodium alginate ternary nanoparticles: characterization and application in stable Pickering emulsions.

In this study, zein/ferulic acid nanoparticles (ZFs) and zein/ferulic acid/sodium alginate nanoparticles (ZFSs) were prepared using the anti-solvent method and employed to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Compared with ZFs, ZFSs exhibited better performance. Specifically, although the particle size increased from 186.4 nm to 202.9 nm, the polydispersity index decreased from 0.27 to 0.19. The zeta potential shifted from +30.88 mV to -46.01 mV, and the denaturation peak temperature increased from 101.0 °C to 135.0 °C. Furthermore, FTIR analysis suggested the presence of hydrogen bonds, electrostat

Facile synthesis of rapid hemostatic powder based on sodium alginate for promoting hemostasis and wound healing.

Uncontrollable bleeding and excessive blood loss are the primary causes of death on the battlefield and in accidents. However, commercial hemostatic materials possess individual drawbacks for hemostasis. Here, we present a rapid hemostatic powder (SACC-GO) with high biosafety, which is fabricated by a facile ball milling method using inexpensive raw materials (sodium alginate (SA), calcium chloride, cerium nitrate and graphene oxide (GO)). The SACC-GO could immediately become gel when meeting blood, whose strength was enhanced due to specific surface area of GO and high coordination capacity o

Application of sodium alginate and polyethylene glycol bilayer multifunctional hydrogel microneedles in infectious and diabetic wounds.

Chronic wounds are challenging to heal due to persistent infection, prolonged inflammation, and impaired angiogenesis, which can ultimately lead to severe disabilities. Current treatment strategies are unable to provide the comprehensive conditions needed for effective chronic wound healing. Herein, we proposed a multifunctional microneedle patch for chronic wound healing, consisting of a needle-like drug-loading gel (DG) constructed with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a backing hydrogel (BHG) layer constructed with sodium alginate. This design combines the therapeutic effects of drug delivery

NMR/MRI Techniques to Characterize Alginate-Based Gel Rafts for the Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is associated with symptoms such as heartburn, resulting from gastric content reflux. Alginate-based raft-forming gel formulations represent a non-pharmacological strategy for GERD management by forming a floating gel barrier in the stomach. This study evaluated three commercial anti-reflux oral gel systems under simulated fed-state gastric conditions, using in vitro magnetic resonance relaxometry techniques. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in 0.01 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) to visualize gel raft formation, spatial structure, and spatial dis

Size- and density-dependent gastric emptying of emulsion-alginate beads for tailored in vitro intestinal lipolysis.

The gastric emptying profile is essential for nutrient digestion and metabolism, and its complex relation with food structure is not well understood. Advanced dynamic in vitro digestors in combination with model food structures offer promising ways to study and control digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, the NEar Real Digestive Tract (NERDT) system is used to investigate the impact of gastric emptying on intestinal lipolysis of emulsion-alginate beads. These model food structures were 0.8-3.2 mm in size, and had different density. All particles were strong enough to resist

[Three-dimensional printed scaffolds with sodium alginate/chitosan/mineralized collagen for promoting osteogenic differentiation].

The three-dimensional (3D) printed bone tissue repair guide scaffold is considered a promising method for treating bone defect repair. In this experiment, chitosan (CS), sodium alginate (SA), and mineralized collagen (MC) were combined and 3D printed to form scaffolds. The experimental results showed that the printability of the scaffold was improved with the increase of chitosan concentration. Infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed that the scaffold formed a cross-linked network through electrostatic interaction between chitosan and sodium alginate under acidic conditions, and X-ray diffrac

Alginate-Encapsulated Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Improve Hind Limb Ischemia in a Translational Swine Model.

BACKGROUND: Cellular therapies have been investigated to improve blood flow and prevent amputation in peripheral artery disease with limited efficacy in clinical trials. Alginate-encapsulated mesenchymal stromal cells (eMSCs) demonstrated improved retention and survival and promoted vascular generation in murine hind limb ischemia through their secretome, but large animal evaluation is necessary for human applicability. We sought to determine the efficacy of eMSCs for peripheral artery disease-induced limb ischemia through assessment in our durable swine hind limb ischemia model. METHODS AND

A self-healing thermogelling polymer with tunable transparency based on biomolecule alginate grafting phenylboronic acid.

Thermogelling polymers with transparency, structure stability and biocompatibility are promising for biomedicine application. In this study, a thermogelling polymer P-C5PEG with tunable transparency was developed by the reaction between alternating copolymer C5PEG and chemically modified biomolecule Alg-PBA via boronic ester bonds. The sol-to-gel transition of P-C5PEG aqueous solution sensitively responded to changes in temperature, and the critical value could be adjusted between 15 and 40 °C by varying the content of C5PEG and Alg-PBA. As the weight ratio of Alg-PBA to C5PEG was over 0.3, th

Optimization of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan microbeads for the sustained release of celecoxib and attenuation of intestinal inflammation in vitro.

Multiple anti-inflammatory medications have helped treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, oral administration has minimal absorption and systemic side effects. This study aims to investigate the potential of encapsulating anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib (Cele) within microbeads for the treatment of IBD. Microbeads were formed by cross-linking carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCs) with sodium alginate (Alg) through the ionic gelation method and optimized through response surface methodology. Additionally, the study revealed a mucoadhesivity value of 59.32 ± 0.74 % for the optimized microbead
