Socio-Behavioral Research Experiences and Acceptability of Serial Lymph Node and Gut Biopsies Among Young Women Enrolled in an HIV Cure-Related Trial in Durban, South Africa.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) persists in diverse body tissues, including the gut, lymph nodes (LNs), and lungs, requiring direct sampl … res. Serial tissue sampling was acceptable among young South African women despite some discomfort. Altruism was a primary motivator, while clear communication and participant-centered care were critical to supporting informed participation and repeat sampling.

Motivations for blood donation by HIV-positive individuals on antiretrovirals in South Africa: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: We performed a mixed-methods study to explore the motivations associated with blood donation by donors with known, but undisclos … is. RESULTS: We uncovered two primary motivational paths to HIV+/ARV+ blood donations: privacy and altruism. The latter included a motivation not previously reported in the literature: donating specifically for other people living with HIV (PLWH). The other primary factor was a lack of privacy. These accounts often included donors encountering donation op …

Learning from the experiences of midwifery students and recent graduates in humanitarian and conflict-affected settings: A prospective cohort study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Health workforce shortages are a serious impediment to the delivery of effective and person-centered care, particularly in conflict settings. Midwives are a critical cadre who can help avert maternal and child death, but face persistent barriers to education, employment, regulation, and professional development-challenges that are especially pronounced in conflict-affected areas. Few studies have systematically explored midwives' experiences in these settings. OBJECTIVES: The EQUAL midwifery cohort study was established to systematically examine midwives' educational and professio

Neural response to prosocial scenes relates to subsequent giving behavior in adolescents: A pilot study.

Adolescence is characterized by extensive neural development and sensitivity to social context, both of which contribute to engaging in prosocial behaviors. Although it is established that prosocial behaviors are linked to positive outcomes in adulthood, little is known about the neural correlates of adolescents' prosociality. Identifying whether the brain is differentially responsive to varying types of social input may be important for fostering prosocial behavior. We report pilot results using new stimuli and an ecologically valid donation paradigm indicating (1) brain regions typically rec

[The philosophical roots of "connectedness": The care clinic].

If suicide remains "the only really serious philosophical problem" (A. Camus), historically a certain number of philosophers have legitimized it while others have condemned it. Among the philosophers who admitted that suicide could be a possibility, some showed understanding and others remained more modest. Kierkegaard's philosophical stance, demonstrating that one can never decide for the other where existential problems are concerned, opens a third way. Following him, Michel Cornu coined the expression "ethics of concern". That restlessness, etymologically, can be understood at the same time

When is giving an impulse? An ERP investigation of intuitive prosocial behavior.

Human prosociality is often assumed to emerge from exerting reflective control over initial, selfish impulses. However, recent findings suggest that prosocial actions can also stem from processes that are fast, automatic and intuitive. Here, we attempt to clarify when prosocial behavior may be intuitive by examining prosociality as a form of reward seeking. Using event-related potentials (ERPs), we explored whether a neural signature that rapidly encodes the motivational salience of an event-the P300-can predict intuitive prosocial motivation. Participants allocated varying amounts of money be

Subversive mythical figures and feminist resistance: On the rise of posthuman 'professionals'.

Within the context of neoliberal healthcare, nurses and other health professionals face working conditions that leave them perpetually feeling inadequate, as though they are not enough. They are consistently expected to achieve more with less resources. In such an environment, mere professionalism proves wholly insufficient, enforcing norms of altruism and kindness. Professionals must transcend this disciplinary tool and embody a 'more-than-professional' approach. This study, informed by critical posthumanism, employs three mythical archetypes-the Medusa, the Witch and the Siren-to illuminate …

Ethical and medical dilemmas in paid living kidney donor transplantation.

Due to the shortage of deceased and genetically- or emotionally-related living donors, living unrelated paid donor (LURpD) kidney transplantation has been considered; however, this practice may result in medical, ethical and social dilemmas, induce organ trading (commodification), and even criminal activities. Commodification also risks undermining public trust in the transplant system and impeding the development of proper altruistic or deceased donor programs by ignoring altruism, volunteerism, and dignity. However, despite many objections by authoritative organizations, black market practic…

Description and evaluation of a national humanitarian opioid poisoning education and naloxone distribution program.

SETTING: Canada's opioid poisoning crisis claimed 49,105 lives from January 2016 to June 2024. Opioid poisoning education and naloxone distribution programs can reduce fatalities, although access remains inconsistent across Canada. These programs have mostly been delivered in person through community, healthcare, and social service agencies. INTERVENTION: The Canadian Red Cross implemented a national, free, bilingual, virtually accessible, opioid harm reduction program, leveraging its experience in first aid education and community relationships as a humanitarian organization. The Opioid Harm

Frontal Pole Hypometabolism Linked to Reduced Prosocial Sexual Behaviors in Frontotemporal Dementia and Corticobasal Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Changes in sexual behaviors in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are common and multifaceted, but not well characterized. OBJECTIVE: To characterize changes in sexual behaviors and intimacy in FTD compared to corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and normal controls (NC), and to evaluate the neuroanatomical associations of these changes. METHODS: Spouses of 30 FTD patients, 20 CBS patients, and 35 NC completed the Sexual Symptoms in Neurological Illness and Injury Questionnaire (SNIQ), which captures changes in sexual interest, inappropriate sexual behaviors, and prosocial sexual behaviors. 25

Attitudes of Patients With Gastrointestinal Cancers Toward Research Biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Research biopsies are an increasingly important component of clinical trials, but there are concerns that biopsies may deter patients from participating in research. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients participating in a single-center study investigating the feasibility of molecular profiling in advanced gastrointestinal cancers were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their reasons for consenting/declining optional research biopsies and blood samples. These samples were mainly for exploratory translational research and were unlikely to influence patients' treatment. RESULTS:
