Ehrlichia ruminantium infection and infestations by two tick species, Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus microplus, are a major threat to the livestock sector in Guadeloupe. This study aimed to identify farming practices and livestock characteristics associated with the circulation of E. ruminantium antibodies in cattle (data already published) and tick infestations. Tick presence was assessed for 261 cattle from 73 farms across the three main islands of the Guadeloupe archipelago (Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre and Marie-Galante). The sampling methodology employed was designed to ensure repres…

Introduction: Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses are tick-transmitted infections caused by Gram-negative, obligately intracellular bact … ing detected by real-time PCR. Discussion:Rickettsia parkeri is transmitted by the Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum) and is an increasingly recognized cause of SFG rickettsiosis in the United States. Rickettsia parkeri should be considered in those with an acute undifferentiated febrile illness with lesions that are pustular or papulovesicular, as promp …

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) in ticks that feed on horses used for animal traction in rural Jataizinho, Parana, Brazil. Between February and June 2008, a total of 224 ticks was collected of which 75% were identified as Dermacentor nitens and 25% as Amblyomma cajenense. To amplify B. burgdorferi s.l. DNA, the intergenic space region (ISR) between the 5S (rrf) 23S (rrl) rRNA genes was used as targets for nested-PCR. Two ticks of the D. nitens species were positive for B. burgdorferi s.l. Both species showed a fragment of 1…

From 1998-2002 twenty-five deer self-treatment devices (4-Posters), using 2% amitraz, were operated at three locations in Maryland to determine their effectiveness in controlling blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, and lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L.). Each treatment site was approximately 518 ha and paired with a similar site lacking 4-Posters. Locations varied in deer density, tick abundance, and land use. Flagging for host-seeking ticks showed declines in tick populations at all treatment sites compared to control sites by the third year. By 2002, control of I. scapularis ny…

The reservoir hosts of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, etiologic agent of human ehrlichiosis are unknown. Initially, white-tailed deer (WTD) were serologically implicated as possible reservoirs of E. chaffeensis. Subsequent studies showed that WTD were susceptible to infection with E. chaffeensis and that deer-to-deer transmission by a tick vector, Amblyomma americanum, is possible under experimental conditions. To determine if wild WTD were infected with E. chaffeensis, whole blood was collected from 10 deer from Oklahoma and Georgia. All 10 deer had antibodies reactive to E. chaffeensis. Whereas E. c…

The authors have presented evidence through work done 25-30 years ago for the rickettsial etiology of Bullis fever, a forgotten epidemic which occurred with over a 1,000 cases among World War II troops in training at Camp Bullis, Texas. Rickettsiae were recovered from blood and lymph nodes of patients and from ticks, Amblyomma americanum, collected in the area. All patients gave a history of tick-bites. The human and tick strains of rickettsiae, carried in chick embryo culture and in animal passage, were found to produce the characteristic syndrome of Bullis fever in human volunteers inoculate…

Results of a survey of the parasites of the collared peccary (Dicotyles tajacu angulatus) in Texas are presented. Three ectoparasites, Amblyomma cajennense, Dermacentor variabilis, and Pulex porcinus were very common on peccaries from south Texas, but less common or absent in arid west Texas. Sucking lice, Pecaroecus javalii, were common on peccaries from west Texas, but were not found in south Texas. The known range of this louse in Texas is extended into the Big Bend area. Two ticks, Amnblyomma inornatumn and Haemaphysalis leporis-palustris, were found infrequently. Five of nine species of e…

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is a common tick-borne disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii. Horses are the primary hosts of the main vector, Amblyomma sculptum, and are considered efficient sentinels for circulation of Rickettsia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to detect antibodies reactive to R. rickettsii antigens in horses from a non-endemic area in the north-central region of Bahia state, Brazil. Blood samples and ticks were collected from 70 horses from the municipalities of Senhor do Bonfim, Antônio Gonçalves, Pindobaçu, and Campo Formoso. The sera obtained were tested by an indi…

Equines play a role in the epidemiology of Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) since they are a primary host for the tick Amblyomma sculptum. We studied the seroprevalence for three species of Rickettsia in equines in four endemic (with human cases) and in four non-endemic areas (no human cases) in the Piracicaba River Basin, São Paulo, Brazil. A serological survey of 504 equines was performed: around 63 animals were sampled in each area and tested through indirect immunofluorescence assay for R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, and R. bellii in 2012-2013. Blood samples were seropositive for 183 equines (36.…

The present study provides a rickettsial serosurvey in 25 dogs and 35 humans in an endemic area for Brazilian spotted fever in the State of São Paulo, where the tick Amblyomma aureolatum is the main vector. Testing canine and human sera by indirect immunofluorescence against four Rickettsia antigens (R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, R. felis and R. bellii) showed that 16 (64%) of canine sera and 1 (2.8%) of human sera reacted to at least one of these rickettsial antigens with titers >0r= 64. Seven canine sera and the single reactive human serum showed titers to R. rickettsii at least four times thos…

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases are an important public health concern worldwide. In Japan, tick-associated rash illness (TARI) has been frequently reported following bites from Amblyomma testudinarium. However, the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors associated with TARI are not well understood. This study aimed to characterize tick bite cases and identify predictors associated with the development of TARI.
METHODS: We analyzed 523 tick bite cases reported by medical clinics in Hyogo and Shizuoka Prefectures, Japan, between 2019 and 2024. Data on demographics, clinical manifesta…

BACKGROUND: Alpha-gal is an oligosaccharide implicated in delayed anaphylaxis following red meat consumption. Exposure to tick bites has been correlated with development of an allergic response to alpha-gal. However, evidence prospectively linking exposure to a single tick species and an immune response to alpha-gal is lacking.
METHODS: We used serum samples from a prior study cohort of outdoor workers in North Carolina, USA, with high exposure to the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, to prospectively evaluate the relationship between tick bites and anti-alpha-gal IgE antibodies.
