Transient global amnesia associated with a right sphenoid ridge meningioma: a case report.

Transient global amnesia is a self-limited disorder and is regarded as a benign syndrome of vascular etiology. We described a 65-year-old woman who experienced a single episode of transient global amnesia and subsequently developed a right hemispheric syndrome and permanent loss of recent memory. Neuroradiologic investigations and surgical operations revealed a right sphenoid ridge meningioma. Although the syndrome is most often benign, the possibility of mass lesion should be carefully assessed.

Observations during transient global amnesia. A behavioural and neuropsychological study of five cases.

The clinical and behavioural features of 5 patients examined during transient global amnesia (TGA) are described. All underwent extensive neuropsychological testing during and sequentially after the attack. Our results show that in TGA there is a characteristic neuropsychological deficit which parallels that in the permanent amnesic syndrome. Personality, complex cognition and problem solving, semantic knowledge, language and visuospatial function remained intact. Immediate memory was preserved. Longer-term verbal and nonverbal memory was severely disrupted in all cases. In contrast, the exten

[Clinical observations on the psychopathology of amnesic episodes (transient global amnesia) (author's transl)].

Observations obtained by psychopathologic examination and some psychologic testing of two patients in the course of amnesic episodes (transient global amnesia) are presented and discussed. In both cases the psychopathologic findings are those of a reversible isolated amnesic syndrome, characterized by diffuse retrograde amnesia and recent memory deficit, whereas immediate and remote (personal) memory are preserved. Stereotype questions, disorientation in time, and--in one case--anxious restlessness, which accompany the amnesic syndrome, are probably due to impaired memory and the patient's awa

Hippocampal contributions to semantic memory retrieval: Strategy-specific impairments in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA), a transient memory disorder in clinical neurology, is a unique clinical model for the study of hippocampal dysfunction and its implications for memory processes. While data are rather unequivocal concerning the relevance of the hippocampus for episodic memory, there is considerable dispute about its role for semantic memory. This study aimed at exploring how hippocampal impairment, which underlies the clinical presentation of TGA, affects semantic memory retrieval, particularly with regard to different retrieval strategies. Data from the acute and post-acute pha

Automated CT perfusion analysis reveals medial temporal perfusion abnormalities during transient global amnesia.

INTRODUCTION: The underlying pathophysiology of Transient global amnesia (TGA) remains elusive. Reports of perfusion abnormalities in TGA were inconsistent, but semi-automated analysis of perfusion CT (CTP) may improve reliability and precision of perfusion deficit detection. METHODS: Per institutional protocol, all TGA patients undergo multiphasic contrast-CT with arch to vertex CT angiography, intracranial CT venography, MRI, and EEG upon admission. During the study period consecutive patients diagnosed with TGA underwent CTP during the early acute amnestic phase. We retrospectively reviewe

Altered cerebellar volumes and intrinsic cerebellar networks in patients with transient global amnesia.

This study aimed to investigate the differences in cerebellar volumes and intrinsic cerebellar networks between patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) and healthy controls. We retrospectively enrolled patients with TGA and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We used three-dimensional T1-weighted imaging at the time of TGA diagnosis to obtain cerebellar volumes, and the intrinsic cerebellar network was calculated by applying graph theory based on cerebellar volumes. The nodes were defined as individual cerebellar volumes, and edges as partial correlations, controlling for the effects o

A case report on concomitant reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome and transient global amnesia.

Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome clinically presents as severe headaches with or without neurological deficits accompanied by multilocal caliber variation of the cerebral arteries on imaging studies. Transient Global Amnesia is a benign neurological condition that implies sudden temporary antero- and retrograde amnesia. The exact pathophysiological mechanisms involved in transient global amnesia and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome remain unclear but suggest similar pathways as both can be triggered by factors that activate the sympathetic nervous system. We herein di

Transient Global Amnesia Related to the Third Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) Vaccination.

We present a case report of transient global amnesia (TGA) after vaccinating the third dose of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). A 65-year-old Japanese woman presented with TGA after her third vaccination, which spontaneously resolved. This article aims to facilitate the clinicians' understanding that TGA could occur after the COVID-19 vaccination in the COVID-19 global outbreak.

Transient global amnesia following deliberate self-harm by hanging: Case report and review.

A 25-year-old female was hospitalized subsequent to an attempt to hang herself. She was unconscious for a few minutes but responded to initial resuscitative measures. Relevant investigations, including X-ray neck, computed tomography scan brain, and electroencephalogram were normal. Physical examination was consistent with attempted hanging. On mental status examination, speech was relevant. Mood was euthymic. Attention was arousable, but concentration was impaired. Orientation to time and recent memory were impaired. Remote memory, insight, and judgment were unimpaired. Serial Mental Status E

Abnormal EEG Power Spectra in Acute Transient Global Amnesia: A Quantitative EEG Study.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by retrograde and anterograde amnesia without other neurological deficits. Although electroencephalography (EEG) methods are commonly used in both clinical and research setting with TGA patients, few studies have investigated neurophysiological pattern in TGA using quantitative EEG (qEEG). The main aim of the present study was to extend these previous findings by exploring EEG power spectra differences between patients with acute TGA and healthy controls using the exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography software

Transient Global Amnesia following Neural and Cardiac Angiography May Be Related to Ischemia.

Introduction. Transient global amnesia (TGA) following angiography is rare, and the pathogenesis has not been illustrated clearly till now. The aim of this research is to explore the pathogenesis of TGA following angiography by analyzing our data and reviewing the literature. Methods. We retrospectively studied 20836 cases with angiography in our hospital between 2007 and 2015 and found 9 cases with TGA following angiography. The data of these 9 cases were analyzed. Results. We found all 9 cases with TGA following neural angiography (5 in 4360) or cardiac angiography (4 in 8817) and no case wi

Just do it! How performing an action enhances remembering in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of a massive episodic memory deficit that spares other cognitive functions. As such, it provides a unique human amnesia model for testing the enactment effect (i.e., better memory for performed actions than for verbally encoded sentences). Our main aim was to test whether the enactment effect is preserved in TGA patients, both to have a better understanding and to test the robustness of this effect in a massive amnesia. Object-action pairs were encoded under four conditions: verbal, experimenter-performed,

Serial changes in delayed focal hippocampal lesions in patients with transient global amnesia.

The etiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) is not well understood. MR studies, including studies using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), have been used to investigate the pathophysiology of TGA, and focal hippocampal lesions have been detected in some studies. The aim of this study was to investigate serial changes in MR images from the patients with TGA. In seven TGA patients, serial MRI scans (from the same day of the onset to several days after the onset of symptoms) using a 1.5-T MR unit were prospectively evaluated. In four patients, the duration of TGA was over 12 hr. Three of those

Recovery from transient global amnesia following restoration of hippocampal and fronto - cingulate perfusion.

A patient who suffered a transient global amnesia (TGA) attack underwent regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) SPECT imaging and neuropsychological testing in the acute phase, after one month and after one year. Neuropsychological testing in the acute phase showed a pattern of anterograde and retrograde amnesia, whereas memory was within age normal limits at follow up. SPECT data were analysed with a within subject comparison and also compared with those of a group of healthy controls. Within subject comparison between the one month follow up and the acute phase detected increases in rCBF in the

Long lasting recurrent familiar transient global amnesia after betablocker treatment withdrawal: case report.

The etiology of Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) is not yet clear. A small part of TGA has a familiar occurrence. We report a case of recurrent, long-lasting familiar amnesia occurring after betablocker treatment withdrawal in a migrainous patient. We suggest that familiar TGA could be caused by the mechanism of vasospasm rather than venous congestion and that the abnormal cerebral vasomotor control could be the hereditary substrate in this condition.

The relationship between working memory and episodic memory disorders in transient global amnesia.

In a previous study, we investigated the relationship between the disorders of both episodic memory and working memory in the acute phase of transient global amnesia (TGA). Since executive functions were spared, another dysfunction may be responsible for the binding and maintenance of multimodal informations and contribute to the encoding disorders observed in some patients [Quinette, P., Guillery, B., Desgranges, B., de la Sayette, V., Viader, F., & Eustache, F. (2003). Working memory and executive functions in transient global amnesia. Brain, 126, 1917-1934.]. The aim of this present study w

Internal jugular vein valve incompetence and intracranial venous anatomy in transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND: Recently a causal relation between internal jugular vein valve incompetence (IJVVI) and transient global amnesia (TGA) has been suggested. IJVVI is postulated to provoke a transient mesiotemporal ischaemia by venous congestion. This mechanism requires a patent venous pathway from the affected IJV through the transverse sinus, confluens, straight sinus (SS), vein of Galen into the basal vein of Rosenthal and the internal cerebral veins. OBJECTIVE: To study IJVVI in TGA patients in relation to the intracranial venous anatomy. METHODS: IJVVI was defined if a repeated Valsalva manoeu

[Transient global amnesia--a benign condition which can also occur in young people].

Transient global amnesia (TGA) occurs mostly in middle-aged and elderly individuals, and is generally believed to be very rare in individuals less than 40 years of age. We present three cases of TGA in young persons (16-22 years). They all had a medical history and presented symptoms fulfilling the criteria for TGA. Physical examinations and investigations were all normal. All three presented their symptoms while playing football. Reviewing the literature the suggested causes are partly different for TGA in old and young people, respectively. The present report confirms that TGA may also occur
