The Current Status of the Alternative Use to Antibiotics in Poultry Production: An African Perspective.

Over the years the growth and health of food-producing animals have been enhanced by the use of antibiotics. These have helped reduce on-farm mortalities, lower incidences of diseases and more importantly improve productivity. Generally, the utilization of antibiotics in feed has been reevaluated since bacterial pathogens have established and shared a variety of antibiotic resistance mechanisms that can easily be spread within microbial communities. Multiple countries have introduced bans or severe restrictions on the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics. This has therefore warranted the urgent

Preliminary Study on an Alternative Test Method with MCTT HCETM for Ocular Irritation Test of Ophthalmic Medical Devices.

The sustained growth of the market for ophthalmic medical devices has increased the demand for alternatives to animal testing for the evaluation of eye irritation. The International Organization for Standardization has acknowledged the need to develop novel in vitro tests to replace animal testing. Here, we evaluated the applicability of an alternative method based on a human corneal model to test the safety of ophthalmic medical devices. 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which are used to fabricate contact lenses, were used as base materials. These materia

An Overview of Current Glaucomatous Trabecular Meshwork Models.

PURPOSE: To provide an overview of the existing alternative models for studying trabecular meshwork (TM). METHODS: Literature review. RESULTS: The TM is a complex tissue that regulates aqueous humor outflow from the eye. Dysfunction of the TM is a major contributor to the pathogenesis of open-angle glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The TM is a porous structure composed of trabecular meshwork cells (TMC) within a multi-layered extracellular matrix (ECM). Although dysregulation of the outflow throughout the TM represents the first step in the disease process, the u

Cardiac puncture blood collection as a practical and biosecure method for post-mortem pathogen detection in pigs.

Live pig specimen collection can be time-consuming as it may require physical restraining. Non-invasive methods for live animals that don't involve blood spillage are available but some may present limitations of application or pathogen detection. Alternative methods focused on the mortality are also available but may derive in blood spillage. As biocontainment and bioexclusion are of concern, especially for pathogens such as the ones that cause classical swine fever and African swine fever, alternative methods can be applied. This article presents the results and opinions of the use cardiac p

The chemotherapy of protozoal infections of veterinary importance.

The use of drugs in domestic animals is dominated by considerations of cost-effectiveness and profitability. They are extensively used against coccidial infections of poultry where they are an important factor in intensive husbandry. Ionophore antibiotics, which dominate this field, may have applications in ruminants. Imidocarb is of therapeutic and prophylactic value against babesial infections anf there are new prospects for control of theileriasis. Effective drugs for the control of African trypanosomiasis are limited and attention is being given to alternative uses of available compounds.

Beyond Pharmacology: A Narrative Review of Alternative Therapies for Anxiety Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders significantly reduce patients' quality of life. Current pharmacological treatments, primarily benzodiazepines and antidepressants, are associated with numerous side effects. Consequently, there is a continual search for alternative methods to traditional therapies that are less burdensome for patients and broaden their therapeutic options. Our objective was to determine the role of selected alternative methods in the treatment of anxiety disorders. METHODS: In this review, we examined recent evidence on alternative treatments for anxiety disorders, including phys

Bear bile: dilemma of traditional medicinal use and animal protection.

Bear bile has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Modern investigations showed that it has a wide range of pharmacological actions with little toxicological side effect and the pure compounds have been used for curing hepatic and biliary disorders for decades. However, extensive consumption of bear bile made bears endangered species. In the 1980's, bear farming was established in China to extract bear bile from living bears with "Free-dripping Fistula Technique". Bear farming is extremely inhumane and many bears died of illness such as chronic infections and

Efficacy and Safety of BCG Vaccine for Control of Tuberculosis in Domestic Livestock and Wildlife.

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) continues to be an intractable problem in many countries, particularly where "test and slaughter" policies cannot be implemented or where wildlife reservoirs of Mycobacterium bovis infection serve as a recurrent source of infection for domestic livestock. Alternative control measures are urgently required and vaccination is a promising option. Although the M. bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has been used in humans for nearly a century, its use in animals has been limited, principally as protection against TB has been incomplete and vaccination may result in

Alternative RNA splicing produces multiple forms of c-Myb with unique transcriptional activities.

The c-Myb transcription factor regulates the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic cells, and activated alleles of c-myb induce leukemias and lymphomas in animals. Relatively minor changes in the structure of c-Myb protein change the genes that it regulates and can unleash its latent transforming activities. Here, quantitative assays were used to analyze the alternative splicing of human c-myb transcripts. We identified an array of variant transcripts, expressed in highly regulated, lineage-specific patterns, that were formed through the use of alternate exons 8A, 9A, 9B, 10A, 13A

β-lactam resistance in gram-negative pathogens isolated from animals.

Although β-lactams remain a cornerstone of veterinary therapeutics, only a restricted number are actually approved for use in food-producing livestock in comparison to companion animals and wildlife. Nevertheless, both registered and off-label use of third and fourth-generation cephalosporins in livestock may have influenced the emergence of plasmid-encoded AmpC β-lactamases (pAmpC) (mainly CMY-2) and CTX-M extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) in both Gram-negative pathogens and commensals isolated from animals. This presents a public health concern due to the potential risk of transfer of β

A Swine Model of Percutaneous Intracoronary Ethanol Induced Acute Myocardial Infarction and Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation.

Ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) is a frequent complication after a myocardial infarction (MI), which doubles mortality. Transcatheter mitral repairs are emerging as alternative treatment options to open heart surgery for IMR, but animal models to test them are lacking. We report a percutaneous swine model of IMR. Seventeen swine were randomized to (group 1, n = 12) MI causing IMR, and (group 2, n = 5) controls. In group 1, MI was induced via percutaneous ethanol injection into the obtuse marginal branches of the left circumflex artery, resulting in ST elevating myocardial infarction. Nine

Detection of DNA of Babesia canis in tissues of laboratory rodents following oral inoculation with infected ticks.

BACKGROUND: Babesia spp. are apicomplexan parasites which infect a wide range of mammalian hosts. Historically, most Babesia species were described based on the assumed host specificity and morphological features of the intraerythrocytic stages. New DNA-based approaches challenge the traditional species concept and host specificity in Babesia. Using such tools, the presence of Babesia DNA was reported in non-specific mammalian hosts, including B. canis in feces and tissues of insectivorous bats, opening questions on alternative transmission routes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification for the Diagnosis of Sporotrichosis by Sporothrix brasiliensis.

We aimed to develop and validate a Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) assay to Sporothrix brasiliensis. LAMP reaction was developed using six primers designed based on calmodulin gene. In the LAMP reaction, we tested twenty isolates of S. brasiliensis from animals and humans, along with ten tissue samples extracted from the left footpad of mice that had been experimentally infected with S. brasiliensis. In addition, it included DNA samples from various other fungal species for specificity evaluation. All S. brasiliensis isolates yielded positive results in the LAMP, and the limit of

Advances in Understanding Neuropathogenesis of Rift Valley Fever Virus.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an emerging arboviral pathogen that causes disease in both livestock and humans. Severe disease manifestations of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in humans include hemorrhagic fever, ocular disease, and encephalitis. This review describes the current understanding of the pathogenesis of RVF encephalitis. While some data from human studies exist, the development of several animal models has accelerated studies of the neuropathogenesis of RVFV. We review current animal models and discuss what they have taught us about RVFV encephalitis. We briefly describe alternative m

Chemical Constituents and an Alternative Medicinal Veterinary Herbal Soap Made from Senna macranthera.

Upon undergoing biomonitoring, the most active dichloromethane extract retrieved from Senna macranthera roots led to the isolation of three main compounds: emodine, physione, and chrysophanol. In this sequence, these compounds revealed a potential antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animals with mastitis infections with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 20, 90, and 90 μg mL(-1), respectively. Therefore, an herbal soap was also produced from this same active extract. This soap was tested in vitro using gloves contaminated by animals with bov

Animal models for neonatal brain injury induced by hypoxic ischemic conditions in rodents.

Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia and resulting encephalopathies are of significant concern. Intrapartum asphyxia is a leading cause of neonatal death globally. Among surviving infants, there remains a high incidence of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy due to neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, manifesting as mild conditions including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and debilitating disorders such as cerebral palsy. Various animal models of neonatal hypoxic brain injury have been implemented to explore cellular and molecular mechanisms, assess the potential of novel therapeutic strategies

Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Part 91. Metal complexes of heterocyclic sulfonamides as potential pharmacological agents in the treatment of gastric Acid secretion imbalances.

Zinc, magnesium, aluminum and copper complexes of several potent, clinically used carbonic anhydrase (CA) sulfonamide inhibitors, such as acetazolamide, methazolamide, ethoxzolamide and benzolamide were tested for their possible applications as antacids, in experimental animals. Gastric acid secretion parameters 3 days after treatment with these CA inhibitors (2 x 500 mg, twice a day), in dogs with chronic gastric fistulas, led to the observation that the gastric acid parameters BAO (the basal acid output), and MAO (the maximal acid output after stimulation with histamine) were drastically red

Recent advances in animal models for pathological scar research: A comprehensive review of experimental approaches and translational relevance.

Pathological scarring, manifested in the form of hypertrophic scars (HTS) and keloid scars (KS), represents a major clinical challenge due to its aesthetic and functional implications for patients. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in these types of scars and developing effective treatments requires the use of controlled experimental models, especially animals, to overcome the limitations of clinical studies. The aim of this sistematic review is to critically analyze the animal models used in the last five years (2020-2025) for the study of pathological scars, highlighting their

Coproduction of single cell protein and pyrroloquinoline quinone by Hyphomicrobium denitrificans using molasses and biogas slurry.

Single cell protein (SCP) is an important supplement to animal protein feed, and pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is frequently used as a functional food and animal feed ingredient. In this study, we aimed to coproduce SCP and PQQ through the fermentation of molasses and biogas slurry by Hyphomicrobium denitrificans SSWJ1 (H. denitrificans SSWJ1). We evaluated the tolerance of H. denitrificans SSWJ1 to alkaline conditions, revealing optimal growth at pH 8, and compared the SCP amounts synthesized in molasses and biogas slurry media (2.0 g/L) and in methanol and ammonium sulfate media (0.7 g/L).
