OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to provide an estimate of the prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders in youth with epilepsy (YWE). It also aimed to calculate the overall magnitude of observed differences in anxiety and depressive symptoms reported by YWE compared with healthy controls and investigate whether any factors moderated anxiety and depression outcomes in YWE.
METHODS: Following prospective registration, electronic databases were searched up until October 2018. Studies were included if they reported on the rate of anxiety or depression in sa

Anxiety disorders are the most commonly reported form of mental health problem among youth, but they often go undiagnosed and untreated. This study examined the relationship between burn-injured youths' self-reported anxiety levels, as compared with their parent's perceptions of their child's emotional well-being. Burn-injured children were invited to voluntarily complete the Child Version of the 41-item survey, Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders, which consists of five anxiety subscales as well as a Total Anxiety Score. Parents were invited to complete the Parent Version. Sixty-three

INTRODUCTION: Choking phobia has been rarely described in the literature and its prevalence has not yet been determined. Because of its clinical picture (female predominance, avoidance or refusal of certain foodstuffs, secondary weight loss, associated obsessive-compulsive symptoms), it is often misdiagnosed as anorexia nervosa.
CASE REPORT: The authors describe the case of an 11-year-old girl, hospitalised for anorexia, who actually had choking phobia. Following a long history of anxiety disorders (including separation anxiety, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder), the choking phobi

OBJECTIVES: Because appetite-regulating hormones are implicated in neuronal survival, growth, and differentiation, they have been suggested to play a role in anxiety disorders. To date, few studies have focused on the association between these hormones and anxiety disorders in children. This study investigated the potential differences in leptin, ghrelin, and nesfatin-1 serum levels in drug-naïve children with anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder, and in healthy controls.
METHODS: This study included 45 children (1

OBJECTIVE: We conducted meta-analyses to assess risk for anxiety disorders among offspring of parents with anxiety disorders, and to establish whether there is evidence of specificity of risk for anxiety disorders as opposed to depression in offspring, and whether particular parent anxiety disorders confer risks for particular child anxiety disorders. We also examined whether risk was moderated by offspring age, gender, temperament, and the presence of depressive disorders in parents.
METHOD: We searched PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science in June, 2016, and July, 2017 (PROSPERO CRD420160488

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problems during childhood and adolescence. This study examined the course of anxiety symptoms in early adolescents from the general population over three phases.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
METHODS: Two hundred and forty-two participants (mean-age of 13.52) from a baseline sample of 1514 (mean-age of 10.23) were followed up three times. Of the 1514 children, those with emotional risk and controls without risk constituted the second-phase sample (n = 562; mean-age of 11.25). The Screen for Child Anxiety Relat

The last decade has seen considerable advances in the treatment of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents and a considerable expansion of the evidence base for psychopharmacologic in this population. The extant data suggest that, for fear-based anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia/social anxiety disorder, and separation anxiety disorder), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs) are well tolerated and offer considerable benefit. However, the salutary effects of SSRIs and SSNRIs in

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities of cognitive control functions, such as conflict and error monitoring, have been theorized to underlie obsessive-compulsive symptoms but only recently have been considered a potentially relevant psychological construct for understanding other forms of anxiety. The authors sought to determine whether these cognitive control processes elicit the same abnormalities of brain function in patients with pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as in those with non-OCD anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Children and adolescents diagnosed as having Crohn disease (CD), a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), have increased vulnerability for anxiety symptoms that may be related to disease-related processes. The aims of this article are 3-fold: to report the proportion of pediatric patients with CD whose self-reported anxiety symptoms are indicative of distress, to describe the constellation of anxiety symptoms, and to examine the relation between anxiety and disease symptoms.
METHODS: Retrospective medical chart review was performed for 93 youths with CD (ages 9-18 years) who ha

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), cognitive avoidance (CA), positive beliefs about worry (PBW) and a tendency to view everyday problems as threats, termed negative problem orientation (NPO), are cognitive vulnerabilities associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression in adults, with fewer studies examining all four vulnerabilities in youth. In this study, validated measures of IU, CA, PBW and NPO were administered to clinically referred youth with a principal diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD, n = 86), anxiety disorders (n = 80) or major depression (n = 18) and to non-clinical
