OBJECTIVES: The symptom and neuroimaging as indications for treating arachnoid cysts (ACs) are not adequate. Understanding the communication between cyst and subarachnoid space is helpful for decision-making. We took a dynamic study of ACs using CT cisternography (CTC) and proposed a classification of arachnoid cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total 52 symptomatic patients with ACs were enrolled in this prospective study. CTC images were ordered, in all enrolled patients, at the 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h after the intrathecal Omnipaque administration. Enhancement in cysts was measured quantitativ

Arachnoid granulation is often found incidentally in the dural sinuses and skull. It may also enlarge the dural sinus or inner table of the skull. We report a 46-year-old woman who presented with occipital headaches and arachnoid granulations in both transverse sinuses and torcular herophili. Neurological examination was normal. Fundoscopic examination, visual fields and acuity were normal. The headache resolved with medical treatment. No intervention for these lesions was planned. The patient was followed up with magnetic resonance imaging studies.

This report presents the course of diagnostic examinations and treatment of a 20-year-old man with bipolar affective disorder for which an organic basis was demonstrated. Computed tomography of the brain revealed an arachnoid cyst that was surgically treated. The patient underwent both psychiatric and neurosurgical treatment. After two-year follow-up and medicamentous treatment prescribed, the patient was symptom-free requiring no psychopharmacotherapy for the next 5.5 years. His overall life functioning is normal, with no signs of disease.

Although the histogenesis of meningiomas remains unclear, it is believed that arachnoid cells are the most likely origin of this type of neoplasm. Further, little attention has been paid to the histopathology of spinal meningiomas arising from the arachnoid villi. We came across a case of spinal meningioma that was locally attached to the arachnoid membrane. The associated arachnoid villi were investigated by light microscopy and immunohistochemical analysis. We confirmed the presence of tumor cells under the fibrous capsule that forms the outer component of the arachnoid villi. Tumor cells gr

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the method, strategy and efficacy of treating different types of quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cysts (QCAC) with neuroendoscope.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted for 12 QCAC patients with obstructive hydrocephalus. They were classified into 3 types and underwent neuroendoscopic operation at our hospital between November 2005 and November 2009. Their surgical approaches, complications and efficacy were analyzed. The mean age of first diagnosis was 3.7 years old. There were 7 type II cases and 5 type III cases with a varying level of symptoms. The follow-

A 62-year-old woman presented with a symptomatic arachnoid cyst of the right occipital convexity manifesting as visual disturbances and headache. She underwent craniotomy with membranectomy and fenestration to the subarachnoid space. Postoperatively, her complaints disappeared and brain magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed cyst shrinkage. During the first 1 year after surgery, she made a good recovery without clinical symptoms or cyst enlargement. However, she complained of visual disturbances after 6 years. Brain MR imaging revealed cyst enlargement and Goldmann perimetry detected left lowe

Although hearing loss in newborns and infants is predominantly due to malformations and infections, there are other situations which may compromise hearing quality in later stages, including posterior-fossa arachnoid cysts (ACs). We report the case of an 8-year-old girl who presented with hearing loss linked to a pontocerebellar-angle AC which had been diagnosed and treated when she was 14 months old. The pathophysiology of this late AC complication is discussed. This case reminds us that a close follow-up with audiologic monitoring and/or brain stem auditory evoked response is necessary in ch

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) overdrainage in hydrocephalus is well recognized. Overshunting following cysto-peritoneal (CP) drainage in patients with arachnoid cysts (AC) is rarely documented.
AIM: We report five patients with acquired Chiari malformation I and three with posterior fossa overcrowding due to excessive CSF drainage in shunted intracranial ACs. We review our observations and discuss the current knowledge on the pathogenesis and management of this complication.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of the eight patients were analyzed in regard to clinical manifestat

The authors report on a patient which presented at birth facial anomalies similar to those of facial alcoholic syndrome (i.e. high forehead, wide nasal bridge, upturned nose, flat philtrum), low set ears, short neck. Successive-ly, also an arachnoid right temporo-polar cyst with hypoplasic right temporal lobe was diagnosed. They think that cerebral cyst, hypoplastic temporal lobe and facial anomalies are congenital. By the origin of facial and leptomeningeal structures from the neural crests, the authors conclude that facial, arachnoid and cerebral anomalies depend from the derangement of the

Most cases of "idiopathic" trigeminal neuralgia are thought to originate from vascular compression of the trigeminal root entry zone. In this case, we describe a young man presenting with the symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia associated with a prepontine (clival) arachnoid cyst.

The association between tuberous sclerosis complex and intracranial abnormalities such as hemimegalencephaly, schizencephaly, intracranial arterial aneurysms, and corpus callosum agenesis/dysplasia has been reported in the recent literature. However, the association between tuberous sclerosis complex and bilateral temporal arachnoid cysts has not been reported. A case of an 8-year-old boy with a mental impairment and epileptic seizures that began 5 years earlier is presented. The neuro-radiological findings are consistent with tuberous sclerosis complex associated with bitemporal arachnoid cys

PURPOSE: To describe two cases of arachnoid cyst that altered the bony orbit.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: Cases of unilateral arachnoid cyst are described in two men, both over the age of 60. The patients were evaluated with computed tomography (CT) scans and in each, an arachnoid cyst in the middle cranial fossa caused bone remodeling with exophthalmos in one. These patients were followed clinically and radiographically over a number of years with no change.
CONCLUSION: Arachnoid cysts in the middle cranial fossa have the potential to result in clinically significant proptosis due to bo

Arachnoid cysts are benign intra-arachnoid collections of cerebrospinal fluid and comprise around 1% of the intracranial masses. Unless complicated with hemorrhage, they are similar to cerebrospinal fluid in signal intensity in most cases. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals that they have no water restriction and distinguishes them from epidermoid cysts, which show water restriction. Arachnoid cysts of the craniospinal junction are rare lesions, with only seven cases reported in the literature. Imaging findings of all craniospinal arachnoid cysts reveal a large posteri

BACKGROUND: Preoperative differential diagnosis of interhemispheric cysts is sometimes difficult.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We recently experienced a case of symptomatic interhemispheric arachnoid cyst in a 62-year-old woman. We reviewed interhemispheric arachnoid cysts in the elderly and the management of symptomatic interhemispheric arachnoid cysts in elderly patients. Symptomatic interhemispheric arachnoid cysts in the elderly are predominantly located on the right side, have a long history of progressive symptomology, occur predominantly in females, and have no communication with the subarachnoid

OBJECTIVE: The optimal surgical treatment for symptomatic temporal arachnoid cysts is controversial. Therapeutic options include cyst shunting, endoscopic fenestration, and craniotomy for fenestration. We reviewed the results for patients who were treated primarily with craniotomy and fenestration at our institution, to provide a baseline for comparisons of the efficacies of other treatment modalities.
METHODS: A retrospective review of data for 50 children who underwent keyhole craniotomy for fenestration of temporal arachnoid cysts between 1994 and 2001 was performed after institutional rev

Arachnoid cysts comprise approximately 1% of all intracranial space-occupying lesions and usually occur sporadically. We report retrocerebellar arachnoid cysts in two male siblings with mental retardation and undescended testis, suggesting the possibility of a genetic basis for at least some cases of retrocerebellar arachnoid cysts.
