Temporal arteritis presenting as an extrapyramidal disorder.

A case of temporal arteritis presenting with extrapyramidal symptoms (tremor, rigidity and extrapyramidal hypertonus) unresponsive to conventional treatment is here described. The onset of headache and laboratory abnormalities suggestive of temporal arteritis prompted a temporal artery biopsy which confirmed the diagnosis; the administration of corticosteroids led to the resolution of all symptoms.

[Temporal arteritis with necrotizing angiitis of the muscles].

A 71 year old woman with typical giant-cell arteritis experienced myalgia of the legs immediately at the end of steroid therapy, 3 months after the onset of her illness. Muscle biopsy showed a focal necrotising panarteritis whereas the muscular fibres remained unchanged. The patient is now asymptomatic after 3 years' follow-up on prednisolone therapy (10 mg per day). This case demonstrates that giant cell arteritis can also involve the muscular arteries.

A hypereosinophilic syndrome with retinal arteritis and tuberculosis.

A 35-year-old man was initially seen with a decrease in visual acuity, renal insufficiency, and elevation of the eosinophil count in the blood. The ocular syndrome was caused by extensive arterial occlusions of the retina. The subsequent apparition of cardiac, pulmonary, and neurologic signs fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES). Most symptoms, including ocular, were temporarily but notably improved by hydroxyurea. The patient died after two years. An autopsy showed an endomyocardial fibrosis and disclosed destruction of the left kidney by an active tuber

Takayasu arteritis and renovascular hypertension in childhood.

Takayasu arteritis with renal artery involvement was the cause of severe persistent hypertension in eight children under 12 years of age. Features of severe hypertension dominated the clinical picture. Unequal or absent pulses were found in three patients. An irregular contour of the descending thoracic aorta on the chest roentgenogram was an early clue to the diagnosis. On aortography both renal arteries were affected in five patients, although a discrepancy in kidney size on excretory urography had suggested a unilateral lesion. Total aortography is mandatory to outline the full extent of th…

Cerebral coenurosis. Report of a case with arteritis.

A case of the unusual clinical condition of cerebral coenurosis, the unique parasitic disease that is localized only in the CNS, is reported. The patient had repeated attacks of transient hemiparesis due to intracranial arteritis which was demonstrated by several angiographic studies. The CSF showed a discreet lymphocytosis and increased immunoglobulins. This inflammatory reaction which preceeded the manifestations of the intracranial mass can be explained by the parasitic foreign bodies, the liberation of somatic and metabolic parasitic toxins and the immunological reaction of the organism. T…
