Neisseria gonorrhoeae: An Unexpected Cause of Polyarthritis and Meningitis.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a gram-negative coccus, is a major cause of morbidity among sexually active individuals. Hematogenous spread of N gonorrhoeae from the initial site of infection is thought to occur in only 0.5% to 3% of infected patients. Disseminated gonococcal infections can rarely lead to serious sequelae, such as endocarditis or meningitis. In this article, we present a case that demonstrates a rare finding of disseminated gonococcal infection leading to N gonorrhoeae meningitis, complicated by hydrocephalus. The patient in this case initially presented with intermittent polyarthralg

[Septic arthritis of the knee by Staphylococcus warneri].

Septic arthritis usually occurs as an acute joint process that can cause a rapid destruction of the cartilage, if the necessary therapeutic measures were not taken. Rarely, Staphylococcus warneri may be the cause of this pathology although due to its diagnostic difficulty we can make mistakes in its treatment. We present the case of a patient with septic arthritis of the knee by this germ and we intend to remark what are the diagnostic measures and recommendations to consider for this osteoarticular infection.

Editorial Commentary: Arthroscopy Is a Generally Effective Treatment for Septic Arthritis.

Hip bacterial septic arthritis is an indication for arthroscopy in combination with medical management. After arthroscopy, patients must be vigilantly observed; some patients require more than one irrigation and debridement.

Arthroscopy in cattle: technique and normal anatomy.

Arthroscopy has all the advantages of minimally invasive surgery in cattle. Specialized equipment and knowledge of normal joint anatomy of cattle are mandatory for successful arthroscopy. The surgical technique is different in cattle compared with the horse. Thick skin and joint capsules complicate movement of the arthroscope within the joints. In cattle, septic arthritis and osteochondrosis are the most frequent disorders suitable for arthroscopic treatment.

Beta haemolytic streptococci and musculoskeletal sepsis in adults.

Lancefield group A streptococci (GAS) account for 3-17% cases of septic arthritis, but other beta haemolytic streptococci (BHS) (groups B, C, and G) are being increasingly implicated. Epidemiological evidence suggests that the increase of BHS sepsis in adults is a true increase and not simply a reflection of better reporting. While underlying predisposing disease and old age are common concomitants of BHS sepsis, some subjects with devastating disease have been young and healthy. This is particularly the case for highly virulent M1 serotypes of GAS, where a toxic shock-like syndrome has led to

Bacterial arthritis.

The 1991 literature on septic arthritis included a concise review of adult septic arthritis, examples of pseudoseptic arthritis, and two interesting animal studies. One animal study examined the induction of acute synovitis by the intra-articular injection of bacterial endotoxin and the cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-1 beta; and the other studied the effects of early and delayed synovectomy in the management of septic arthritis. The predispositions to septic arthritis can be divided into local joint abnormalities, systemic factors, or both. Examples of the local joint a

Joint manifestations of Lyme borreliosis in Europe.

Our clinical and serological studies have shown that Lyme arthritis is not a rare manifestation of Lyme borreliosis in Europe. The significance of serological findings for Lyme arthritis have more often remained uncertain in consideration of potential differential diagnoses than was to be expected on the basis of specificity controls. Various joint manifestations in the course of Lyme borreliosis have been distinguished. The succession or the coexistence of intermittent attacks of arthralgias and arthritis has been pointed out as particular indications of Lyme arthritis. We have noted diffuse

Neonatal osteomyelitis and septic arthritis.

The records of seventeen neonates (13 males and 4 females) with osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, who were admitted over a 3 year period, were reviewed. Neither prematurity nor low birth weight seemed to be a predisposing factor. The majority of the neonates (88.2%) had some antecedent illness or were subjected to certain procedures in the neonatal period. Paucity of movement of limb, fever and local swelling of the joint were the most frequent presenting symptoms. Deep soft tissue swelling was the frequently noted radiographic change (58.8%). Bone scintigraphy was abnormal in 7 out of 11 ca
