In this study, the frequency of occurrence of speech and voice symptoms in 200 Parkinson patients was defined by two expert listeners from high-fidelity tape recordings of conversational speech samples and readings of the sentence version of the Fisher-Logemann Test of Articulation Competence. Specific phonemes that were misarticulated were catalogued. Other vocal-tract dysfunctions, including laryngeal disorders, rate disorders, and hypernasality, were also recorded. Cooccurrence of symptoms in each patient was tabulated. Examination of the patterns of cooccurring dysfunctions permitted class

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors evaluated literacy outcome in children with histories of speech sound disorder (SSD) who were characterized along 2 dimensions: broader language function and persistence of SSD. In previous studies, authors have demonstrated that each dimension relates to literacy but have not disentangled their effects. Methods Two groups of children (86 SSD and 37 controls) were recruited at ages 5-6 and were followed longitudinally. The authors report the literacy of children with SSD at ages 7-9, compared with controls and national norms, and relative to language skill a

To examine the association between speech production and early literacy skills, this study of 102 preschool children looked at phonological awareness in relation to whether children were delayed, typical, or advanced in their articulation of consonants. Using a developmental typology inspired by some of the literature on speech development (Kahn and Lewis, The Kahn-Lewis phonological analysis, 1986; Shriberg, Journal of Speech and Hearing Research 36(1):105-140, 1993a), we found that failure to master the early-8 consonants and a greater prevalence of certain types of production errors were as

BACKGROUND: It appears to be widely accepted that specific language impairment (SLI) and developmental dyslexia result from some form of phonological deficit. Some theorists contend that these deficits are directly and exclusively caused by a cognitive deficit specific to representation and processing of speech sound. However, separate theories hold that phonological deficits indeed may cause SLI or dyslexia but phonological deficits arise due to sensory, mainly auditory, deficits. Here we studied if there is a correlation between two hotly debated measures of auditory low-level processing and

The diagnostic criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have undergone minor changes in DSM-5 yet a major turnaround intervened in the overarching categorical allocation. OCD indeed has been separated from the anxiety disorders and included in an autonomous class of OCD-related disorders. Converging factors, i.e., the specificity of the clinical phenotype, the robust evidence for familial aggregation, the availability of effective treatments, and the increasing awareness of the role of environmental factors in its onset and course make OCD a suited target for tailored early interventio

Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) keep the upper airways patent by holding the mandible and attached soft tissues forward via altered position of its condyles relative to the articulating surfaces of the temporal bones. During the first weeks of MAD therapy, pain may occur in the area of the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, and/or teeth with a tendency of spontaneous resolution. In patients reporting temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms prior to therapy, the MAD-related anterior condylar position during sleep may result in a reduction of TMD signs and symptoms.

Spinal instrumentation is a common method for the treatment of spinal disorders, but it can lead to the changes of spine biomechanics. Because of the stress changes, accelerated degeneration of the adjacent segment may occur as time goes by, namely adjacent segment disease. The accelerated degeneration can lead to secondary spinal stenosis, articulated joint degeneration, acquired spondylolisthesis, and spine instability, and some patients may have to receive surgery again. In recent years, the researchers gradually recognized the importance of this disease, and began to investigate its pathog

A thorough understanding of the structure and function of the equine vertebral column can provide a clearer understanding of thoracolumbar spinal disorders. Three primary functions of the vertebral column include protection of the spinal cord, support for weight bearing, and flexibility for locomotion. Osseous structures provide structural support and vary from one vertebral region to another as functional requirements change. The spinal musculature produces complex vertebral movements while the spinal ligaments provide stability to the vertebral column. Proprioception and nociception are two

This paper describes the use of electropalatography (EPG) in the treatment of a speech disorder in a Cantonese-speaking woman who had primary repair of the palate at age 13. A multiple-baseline approach was used to document treatment efficacy using electropalatography. The client showed rapid improvement in articulatory placement, with generalization to nontarget phonemes. In addition, improvement was noted in her manner of articulation, with a reduction of nasal emission. The relationship between articulatory placement errors and nasal emission in late repair cleft is discussed. Explanations

Data are given on the condition of the thoracic spine of 465 patients with certain gastric and duodenal diseases. Degenerative-dystrophic lesions (spondylosis deformans and intervertebral osteochondrosis) of the thoracic spine together with osteoarthritis deformans of the costovertebral and costotransverse articulations lead to neurodystrophy of the gastric and duodenal mucosa through chronic stimulation by osteophytes of the thoracic sympathetic ganglia. Disorders of gastric and duodenal motor activity are also important. The attendant reflux gastritis is stipulated by reflux of the intestina

Saliva is an essential body fluid. It is important in maintaining oral health, taste acuity, mastication, deglutition and digestion, oral flora regulation, oral cleansing, voice acuity, and speech articulation. Saliva is composed largely of water but also contains minerals, electrolytes, buffers, enzymes, growth factors, cytokines, immunoglobulins, proteins, and metabolic waste products, with the concentrations and compositions of these components varying by individual. Many systemic disorders can affect salivary function, greatly compromising oral health. One such disorder is Sjögren's Syndro

A neurolinguistical analysis of speech by the articulation method of E. N. Vinarskaya in patients with senile dementia (4 cases) and its combination with cerebral atherosclerosis (4 cases) permitted to detect a primary "level" defect in the speech functional system. The study demonstrated a prevalent lesion of the lower, gnostico-praxis level in combination of 2 processes and prevalence of disorders of a higher, phenological (lingual)--in cases of "pure" senile dementia. A comparison of the clinical stage of the disease and the level of lesion in the speech functional system showed a possibili

PURPOSE: Although speech motor changes are reported as a common sign of Huntington's disease (HD), the most prominent signs of voice dysfunction remain unknown. The aim of the current study was to explore specific changes in phonatory function in subjects with HD.
METHOD: 34 subjects with HD and 34 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were examined. Participants performed sustained vowel phonation for subsequent analyses of airflow insufficiency, aperiodicity, irregular vibrations of vocal folds, signal perturbations, increased noise, and articulation deficiency. In total, 272 phonations wer

Shoulder and neck concerns are prevalent musculoskeletal issues prompting medical attention, often stemming from scapulothoracic disorders that can serve as both the cause and consequence of other shoulder abnormalities. Scapular dyskinesis, fractures, benign and malignant masses, and neuropathies are frequently overlooked yet can substantially affect shoulder pain and function, particularly in athletes. Scapulothoracic disorders may lead to and/or be worsened by common shoulder abnormalities including those of the rotator cuff, neighboring bursae, and the glenohumeral articulation and labrum.

OBJECTIVE: To study classification of the articulation errors, find the related factors which affect the therapy effect, and compare the therapy effect in the different patterns of the phonemic errors and build up a clinical model of the speech therapy on the basis of more than 4 years speech therapy in the clinic.
METHOD: After excluding the organic articulation disorders, 91 cases of consonant phonemic errors were classified into different patterns according to the phonemic placement errors. The 91 cases were divided into two groups as effective one and ineffective one depending on whether …

Ultrasound imaging has been widely adopted in speech research to visualize dynamic tongue movements during speech production. These images are universally used as visual feedback in interventions for articulation disorders or visual cues in speech recognition. Nevertheless, the availability of high-quality audio-ultrasound datasets remains scarce. The present study, therefore, aims to construct a multimodal database designed for Mandarin speech. The dataset integrates synchronized ultrasound images of lingual movement, and the corresponding audio recordings and text annotations elicited from 4…

Dermoid cysts into ENT zone are specially infrequent--just the 7% of the organism--, and extremely rare if are located in the tongue. They are usually detected as midline acute swelling, and produce swallowing, speech and sleep disorders at neonatal period because of their congenital character. We present an eleven-year-old boy admitted at our Hospital bearing a submandibular and oral swelling, and dysphagia with odynophagia, finally diagnosed as an intralingual double dermoid cyst of the anterior two thirds. Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), an inducible transcription factor in phase II metabolic reactions, as well as xenobiotic response pathway, is referred to as 'master regulator' in anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and xenobiotic detoxification processes. The activity of Nrf2 is tightly regulated by KEAP1, which promotes ubiquitination, followed by degradation under homeostatic conditions and also allows Nrf2 to escape ubiquitination, accumulate within the cell, and translocate in the nucleus upon exposure to the stresses. The Nrf2 pathway has shown an intrinsic mechanism of d
