Sclerotinia homoeocarpa causes dollar spot disease on many turfgrass species and is a significant problem worldwide. Thiophanate-methyl (TM), a methyl benzimidazole carbamate (MBC) fungicide, has been used for over forty years to manage dollar spot. Here we describe genetic mutations linked to three distinct TM fungicide resistance phenotypes: sensitive (S), moderately resistant (MR) and highly resistant (HR). These were established using multiple doses of TM, compared to previous studies using single discriminatory doses. In total, 19 S, 3 MR and 22 HR isolates were detected. Analysis of the

The antifungal activity of an aqueous extract (AE) and the solid fraction of a chloroform-methanol fruit pericarp extract (CME) of Sapindus mukorossi resolved in water was tested for the first time against Venturia inaequalis and Botrytis cinerea-two important fungal pathogens worldwide. In the greenhouse, a CME (1% vol/vol) spray significantly reduced V. inaequalis symptoms and sporulation (99%) on apple seedling leaves (P ≤ 0.05). In field trials, applications of AE (1% vol/vol) reduced the disease severity of B. cinerea on grape, on average, by 63%. Extracts were fractionated by high-perfor

Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) caused by the hemibiotrophic fungus Exserohilum turcicum is an important foliar disease of maize that is mainly controlled by growing resistant maize cultivars. The Htn1 locus confers quantitative and partial NCLB resistance by delaying the onset of lesion formation. Htn1 represents an important source of genetic resistance that was originally introduced from a Mexican landrace into modern maize breeding lines in the 1970s. Using a high-resolution map-based cloning approach, we delimited Htn1 to a 131.7-kb physical interval on chromosome 8 that contained three

Take-all (caused by the fungal pathogen Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, Ggt) and common root rot (caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana) are devastating root diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Development of resistant wheat cultivars has been a challenge since no resistant wheat accession is available. GmPGIP3, one member of polygalacturonase-inhibiting protein (PGIP) family in soybean (Glycine max), exhibited inhibition activity against fungal endopolygalacturonases (PGs) in vitro. In this study, the GmPGIP3 transgenic wheat plants were generated and used to assess the effectiveness of

A 14 year old girl from a coastal district of Odisha presented with a six month history of asymptomatic brownish patches on the palm of the both hands. Epidermal scrape from these patches showed brown septate hyphae with occasional yeast like cells. Hortaea wernekii was isolated from the fungal culture. A diagnosis of Tinea nigra was made. The patches resolved completely after treatment with topical 1% clotrimazole cream.

Secondary metabolites produced by endophytic microorganisms can provide benefits to host plants, such as stimulating growth and enhancing the plant's resistance toward biotic and abiotic factors. During its life, a host plant may be inhabited by many species of endophytes within a restrictive environment. This condition can stimulate secondary metabolite production that improves microbial competition and may consequently affect both the neighboring microorganisms and the host plant. The interactions between the endophytes that co-habit the same host plant have been studied. However, the effect

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic fungal infection caused by species of the family Dematiaceae. Fonsecaea pedrosoi is the most common etiological agent. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological and mycological profile of patients with chromoblastomycosis from the Amazon region of Brazil and to correlate the clinical forms with the histopathological findings and severity criteria.
METHODS: Sixty-five patients were submitted to mycological (direct, culture, and microculture) and histopathological (hematoxylin-eosin staining) examination. Severity of th

Curvularia lunata is a dematiaceous fungus that rarely causes cutaneous infections in immunocompetent humans. We describe a case of mycetoma pedis caused by Curvularia lunata in a 50-year-old woman from a rural farming community who had prolonged morbidity due to diagnostic delay. She improved with antifungal therapy, showing a satisfactory clinical response after 12 months of treatment.

The authors report a case (in Itajai, Santa Catarina State, Brazil) of tinea nigra in a 4-year-old female child which spontaneously healed. We discuss the clinical and epidemiological aspects of the mycosis and this rare case of spontaneous healing.

BACKGROUND: Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic mycotic infection, most common in the tropics and subtropics, following traumatic fungal implantation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 72 year-old farmer was admitted to Luang Namtha Provincial Hospital, northern Laos, with a growth on the left lower leg which began 1 week after a forefoot leech bite 10 years previously. He presented with a cauliflower-like mass and plaque-like lesions on his lower leg/foot and cellulitis with a purulent tender swelling of his left heel. Twenty-two Chrysomya bezziana larvae were extracted from his heel. PCR of a biopsy of a l

BACKGROUND: Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic fungal infection which presents as a small ulcer, plaques, papulonodular lesion to cauliflower-like warty masses and cicatricial forms. The disease is relatively uncommon, with only a few published case report.
METHODS: A 35-year-old female presented with phagedenic ulcer on the face since 15 years. Examination identified a plaque with central perforation on the right side of the face with crusting and oozing and a scar at the periphery with visible underlying turbinates. A biopsy was done and sent for histopathologic examination and culture. Treat

Chromoblastomycosis (CM), a chronic subcutaneous mycosis, is caused by several dematiaceous fungi, the most common being Fonsecaea pedrosoi. It usually occurs in the lower extremities following traumatic implantation of the organisms. We are reporting a case of chromoblastomycosis on the right lower limb in a sporotrichoid pattern caused by F. pedrosoi. The pattern was probably due to lymphatic spread that seems to be one of the rare presentations. The histopathology showed typical muriform or medlar bodies both intracellularly and extracellularly within the granuloma. Culture revealed sporula

UNLABELLED: To report an unusual case of fungus keratitis due to Fonsecaea pedrosoi that developed after corneal trauma.
CASE REPORT: A 18-year-old male presented with a corneal ulcer in the right eye, 28 days after a trauma with glass fragments. Corneal scrapings were collected for smears and culture. Dematiaceous hyphae were seen on wet mounts of the scrapings and dark pigmented colonies grew repetitively on the culture media; all colonies were identical, and were subsequently identified as Fonsecaea pedrosoi. Treatment was initiated with topical natamycin at one hour intervals, 200 mg oral

Monohexosylceramides (CMHs, or cerebrosides) have been reported as membrane and cell wall constituents of both pathogenic and nonpathogenic fungi, presenting remarkable differences in their ceramide moiety compared to mammalian CMHs. Current evidence suggests that CMHs are involved in fungal differentiation and growth and contribute to host immune response. Here we describe a structural diversity between cerebrosides obtained from different forms of the human pathogen Fonsecaea pedrosoi. The major CMH species produced by conidial forms displayed the same structure previously demonstrated by ou
