AIMS: To collect some factors that can help the clinician to design a plan of pharmacologic treatment for children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
DEVELOPMENT: We did a literature search of current available studies on the pharmacological treatment of ADHD. Treatment of ADHD requires the design of a comprehensive and individualized plan for each patient, family and environment, which includes three main parts: psychoeducation and behavioral management training, academic support, and medication. Stimulants (methylphenidate) and non-stimulants (atomoxetine)

OBJECTIVE: A study on chromosomal abnormalities has raised concerns that medication with methylphenidate (MPH) for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) might increase the risk of cancer. We performed a rigorous test of the association between cancer and MPH and other drugs used for ADHD, based on data from nationwide Danish registers.
METHODS: Data were linked from five registers containing information on a total of 21,186 patients with ADHD, their drug prescription rates, and associated cancer diagnoses between 1994 and 2010. The cohort included subgroups treated with MPH only, a

BACKGROUND: International researches found that comorbid psychiatric diagnoses are present in more than two-thirds of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) cases, and the patterns of comorbidity are influenced by developmental aspects. The aim of this study is to compare the comorbid diagnoses with ADHD on a Hungarian sample between a children and an adolescents.
METHODS: Children and adolescents (under the age of 18) with ADHD according to the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview Kid, hospitalized for the first time to Vadaskert Psychiatric Hospital for Children and Adoles

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) in the paediatric age is a common disorder and is in many cases associated to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Yet, it remains 'the great unknown' in paediatrics. We do not usually think of it when examining a child with sleep problems, and there is even a tendency to deny its existence in children. ADHD and RLS have common symptoms and frequently share a common aetiopathogenesis (iron deficiency anaemia). Although important progress has been made in recent years in the research conducted on both disorders, further studies must be carried out to exa

BACKGROUND: It was recently found that the development of typical patterns of prefrontal, but not posterior, cortical asymmetry is disrupted in right-handed youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Using longitudinal data, we tested the hypothesis that there would be a congruent disruption in the growth of the anterior corpus callosum, which contains white matter tracts connecting prefrontal cortical regions.
METHODS: Areas of five subregions of the corpus callosum were quantified using a semiautomated method from 828 neuroanatomic magnetic resonance scans acquired from 236

When attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder in children is truly problematic, methylphenidate, an amphetamine, can be tried as a last resort. Methylphenidate has short-term symptomatic efficacy but also many adverse effects, including a risk of sudden death. After having been evaluated, unsuccessfully, in depression, atomoxetine, a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, was authorised in some EU member states for use in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. In France it has only received temporary authorisation for prescription on a named-patient basis. Two double-blind trials comparing atomo

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether EEG differences exist between children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) who later outgrow the disorder and those who continue to be symptomatic as adults.
METHODS: Thirty-eight boys, diagnosed with AD/HD as children, were reassessed 11 years later to determine who met criteria for adult AD/HD. At the childhood assessment, an EEG was recorded from the AD/HD group and a control group, during an eyes-closed resting condition. This was analysed for absolute and relative power in the delta, theta, alpha and beta bands,

The neurobiological basis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in tuberous sclerosis complex is still largely unknown. Cortical tubers may disrupt several brain networks that control different types of attention. Frontal lobe dysfunction due to seizures or epileptiform electroencephalographic discharges may perturb the development of brain systems that underpin attentional and hyperactive functions during a critical early stage of brain maturation. Comorbidity of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with mental retardation and autism spectrum disorders is frequent in c

INTRODUCTION: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and impairing neuropsychiatric disorder with preschool onset. ADHD occurs in approximately 3-9% of the childhood population. There is a much higher incidence rate in boys who are around three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed. Approximately 30-60% of individuals diagnosed with ADHD in youth have symptoms that persist into adulthood.
LITERATURE FINDINGS: Three subtypes of the disorder have been proposed in the current clinical view of ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and combined type. Numerous problem

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common chronic health conditions and mental disorders affecting school-aged children. Prevalence with a conservative estimate is reported to be 3-5% of this population. Boys are approximately three-times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. The diagnosis refers to a family of related chronic neurobiological disorders that interfere with an individual's capacity to regulate activity level, inhibit behavior and attend to tasks in developmentally appropriate ways. Signs and symptoms of ADHD are typically present during the pres

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattentiveness and/or impulsiveness and hyperactivity, which are unsuited for the developmental stage or age. Although mechanisms leading to the onset of the disease are unclear, this condition seriously hinders childrens' social or learning functions, and recently it was selected as a target disease for a special supporting education program by the Minitry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, together with learning disorders and high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders in Japan. The authors used neuropsychological tests to assess and classify adult patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and controls. Four memory tests correctly classified 81% of subjects. The memory tests were: the auditory Consonant trigram test, the Benton Visual Retention test, the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning test, and the modified Diagnosticum für Cerebralschädigung. The patients scored lower than controls also in other tests sensitive to frontal lobe dysfunction. The results underpin the importance of neuropsychological testing in adult ADD, but also support notions of a w

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder observed during childhood, detected in 3% to 5% of school-age children. The disorder is characterised by marked inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. In most cases, symptoms can be treated by catecholamine-releasing drugs, such as methylphenidate. Children with ADHD are at higher risk for substance abuse and oppositional, conduct and mood disorders. Familial and adoption studies shed light on the genetic vulnerability of ADHD. Twin studies estimated the broad heritability to range between 40% and 90%. The

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common behavioral disorders of childhood and is frequently assessed and treated by pediatricians and other primary care physicians. The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is based on the careful synthesis of clinical data derived from multiple sources, notably, the patient, parents, and teachers. Standard behavioral rating scales simplify and standardize collection of clinical data but by themselves are not sufficient for a diagnosis. Recognition and treatment of disorders comorbid with attention deficit hyperactivi
