What Can We Learn about Auditory Processing from Adult Hearing Questionnaires?

BACKGROUND: Questionnaires addressing auditory disability may identify and quantify specific symptoms in adult patients with listening difficulties. PURPOSE: (1) To assess validity of the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ), the (Modified) Amsterdam Inventory for Auditory Disability (mAIAD), and the Hyperacusis Questionnaire (HYP) in adult patients experiencing listening difficulties in the presence of a normal audiogram. (2) To examine which individual questionnaire items give the worse scores in clinical participants with an auditory processing disorder (APD). RESEARCH DE

Increased intensity discrimination thresholds in tinnitus subjects with a normal audiogram.

Recent auditory brain stem response measurements in tinnitus subjects with normal audiograms indicate the presence of hidden hearing loss that manifests as reduced neural output from the cochlea at high sound intensities, and results from mice suggest a link to deafferentation of auditory nerve fibers. As deafferentation would lead to deficits in hearing performance, the present study investigates whether tinnitus patients with normal hearing thresholds show impairment in intensity discrimination compared to an audiometrically matched control group. Intensity discrimination thresholds were sig

Magnetoencephalographic evidence of abnormal auditory processing in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with bulbar signs.

OBJECTIVE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by progressive motor neuron damage that gives rise to muscle denervation. Besides motor neuron damage, conscious auditory processing appears to be impaired in ALS, whereas it has remained ambiguous whether preceding automatic auditory processing is abnormal in ALS and specifically in ALS with bulbar signs. METHODS: Auditory evoked fields (AEFs) to monaurally presented frequent and infrequent tones with stimulus intervals of 500 and 2500 ms were recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG) from 10 ALS patients having bulbar signs an

Fibromyalgia as a disorder of perceptual organization? An analysis of acoustic stimulus processing in patients with widespread pain.

We examined to what extent patients with fibromyalgia differ from painfree control subjects in the perception and processing not only of somatosensory but also of external stimuli. For this purpose the acoustic perception of 30 patients with fibromyalgia was compared with that of 36 generally pain-free age and gender matched subjects. The groups were also controlled for organic disease of pathological dysfunction of the ear and auditory nerves. Thresholds of unpleasantness and hearing thresholds were determined autiometrically for various frequencies. In addition the participants rated their e

Bone-conduction masking for threshold assessment in auditory brain stem response testing.

The viability of applying Sensorineural Acuity Level (SAL) audiometry to auditory brain stem response (ABR) testing was investigated using 38 subjects with normal hearing, conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing losses. The stimuli were clicks, 4000, 2000, and 1000 Hz tone-pips. After ABR thresholds (ABRt) were obtained, bone-conducted noise was used to mask the response to a stimulus 5 dB above ABR threshold (ABRt + 5). Estimates of behavioral bone-conduction thresholds were made by observing the amount of noise needed to mask ABRt + 5. Estimates of behavioral air-conduction thresholds w

The 2024 Richardson Lecture: Prosopagnosia - A Classic Neurologic Deficit Meets the Modern Era.

Acquired prosopagnosia is a rare disorder, but it serves as a model for impairments in expert-level visual processing. This review discusses five key observations made over the past 30 years. First, there are variants, an apperceptive type linked to damage to the inferior occipitotemporal cortex and an amnestic type associated with anterior temporal lesions, both either right or bilateral. Second, these variants are clustered in syndromes with other perceptual deficits, the apperceptive type with field defects, dyschromatopsia and topographagnosia, and the amnestic type with topographagnosia a

Functional hearing loss and developmental imbalances.

OBJECTIVE: Functional hearing loss (FHL) is a disorder in which there are abnormal values on a hearing test, despite the absence of organic abnormalities in the peripheral and central auditory pathways. Here, we examined the developmental characteristics of FHL and the importance of intervention by analyzing the clinical characteristics of children with this disorder. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 16 patients assessed under a diagnosis of FHL. After interventions such as psychological counseling by our pediatrics and psychiatry departments, we compared the clinical profiles of patients

The effect of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the central auditory system.

Background/aim: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a disease characterized by repeated hypoxia attacks during sleep. The effect of hypoxia on the central nervous system is a well-known entity. In this study we aimed to investigate the effect of OSAS on the central auditory system. Materials and methods: Twenty-one OSAS patients diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG) and 10 control subjects were included in the study. After a thorough otorhinolaryngology examination, all subjects underwent pure tone audiometry (250 to 8000 Hz frequency). The subjects with normal otoscopic examination and he

Mobile phones: influence on auditory and vestibular systems.

UNLABELLED: Telecommunications systems emit radiofrequency, which is an invisible electromagnetic radiation. Mobile phones operate with microwaves (450900 MHz in the analog service, and 1,82,2 GHz in the digital service) very close to the users ear. The skin, inner ear, cochlear nerve and the temporal lobe surface absorb the radiofrequency energy. AIM: literature review on the influence of cellular phones on hearing and balance. STUDY DESIGN: systematic review. METHODS: We reviewed papers on the influence of mobile phones on auditory and vestibular systems from Lilacs and Medline databases,

Musical hallucinations: a statistical analysis of 46 cases.

Musical hallucinations remain rare, are more common in women, and their onset is often related to ear pathology, particularly deafness. When brain disease is involved, pathology of the right or non-dominant hemisphere seems overrepresented. Psychosis and personality traits play a minimal role in their development. A discriminant function was constructed that correctly predicted the presence of brain disease (89%) and included the following clinical variables: being male, having acute onset musical hallucinations, and absence of deafness, psychiatric disease, and other forms of hallucination.

Congenital amusia and academic performance among Colombian university students.

BACKGROUND: Congenital amusia is a rare neurogenetic and neuropsychological condition which hinders the ability to recognize variations in all aspects of a musical piece. Although previous studies have determined the prevalence of congenital amusia in the general population, few have studied its presence among university students. Findings regarding the association between this condition and academic performance are equivocal, although evidence suggests that musical training improves scholastic achievement. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on a sample of 383 university students,

Electrophysiological correlates and psychoacoustic characteristics of hearing-motion synaesthesia.

People with hearing-motion synaesthesia experience sounds from moving or changing (e.g. flickering) visual stimuli. This phenomenon may be one of the most common forms of synaesthesia but it has rarely been studied and there are no studies of its neural basis. We screened for this in a sample of 200+ individuals, and estimated a prevalence of 4.2%. We also document its characteristics: it tends to be induced by physically moving stimuli (more so than static stimuli which imply motion or trigger illusory motion); and the psychoacoustic features are simple (e.g. "whooshing") with some systematic

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD): Progress in Diagnostics So Far. A Mini-Review on Imaging Techniques.

Auditory processing disorder (APD) is a disorder that affects the perception of sound, both verbal and non-verbal. Patients who are generally diagnosed with APD present with abnormal hearing but have normal audiograms. There is no gold standard investigation for APD and no standardized criteria for diagnosis. Because of its disabling effect and the overlap that exists with other neurodevelopmental disorders, there is an urgent need to develop tools and criteria for appropriate diagnosis. There is a current significant focus in research on imaging techniques that can possibly be used in the fut

Cross-training in hemispatial neglect: auditory sustained attention training ameliorates visual attention deficits.

Prominent deficits in spatial attention evident in patients with hemispatial neglect are often accompanied by equally prominent deficits in non-spatial attention (e.g., poor sustained and selective attention, pronounced vigilance decrement). A number of studies now show that deficits in non-spatial attention influence spatial attention. Treatment strategies focused on improving vigilance or sustained attention may effectively remediate neglect. For example, a recent study employing Tonic and Phasic Alertness Training (TAPAT), a task that requires monitoring a constant stream of hundreds of nov

Aberrant resting-state connectivity in non-psychotic individuals with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Although auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a core symptom of schizophrenia, they also occur in non-psychotic individuals, in the absence of other psychotic, affective, cognitive and negative symptoms. AVH have been hypothesized to result from deviant integration of inferior frontal, parahippocampal and superior temporal brain areas. However, a direct link between dysfunctional connectivity and AVH has not yet been established. To determine whether hallucinations are indeed related to aberrant connectivity, AVH should be studied in isolation, for example in non-psychotic indi

Neurophysiological investigation of idiopathic acquired auditory-visual synesthesia.

We present a case of acquired auditory-visual synesthesia and its neurophysiological investigation in a healthy 42-year-old woman. She started experiencing persistent positive and intermittent negative visual phenomena at age 37 followed by auditory-visual synesthesia. Her neurophysiological investigation included video-EEG, fMRI, and MEG. Auditory stimuli (700 Hz, 50 ms duration, 0.5 s ISI) were presented binaurally at 60 db above the hearing threshold in a dark room. The patient had bilateral symmetrical auditory-evoked neuromagnetic responses followed by an occipital-evoked field 16.3 ms la

The Chirp Train Streaming test. A clinical approach to auditory selectivity and listening.

Traditionally, the auditory system is considered as capable, primarily, of frequency and temporal analysis. We introduce a new test, the CTS test, using tone glides (chirps), which takes into account the ability of the auditory system to form perceptual streams. Based on Békésy tracking, the test gives an auditory selectivity index, the streaming index or STIN. The STIN value together with the tracking pattern provide insight into the nature and cause of the patient's listening problems. In this paper, we use the STIN to develop a working hypothesis about the role of middle-ear silent mucosal

Famous faces and voices: Differential profiles in early right and left semantic dementia and in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Famous face and voice recognition is reported to be impaired both in semantic dementia (SD) and in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), although more severely in the former. In AD a coexistence of perceptual impairment in face and voice processing has also been reported and this could contribute to the altered performance in complex semantic tasks. On the other hand, in SD both face and voice recognition disorders could be related to the prevalence of atrophy in the right temporal lobe (RTL). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was twofold: (1) to investigate famous faces and voices reco
