[Impact of different anesthetic states on acupuncture-mediated modulation of autonomic nervous system in animal studies].

Acupuncture therapy has a positive role in the prevention and treatment of some related diseases by regulating autonomic nervous function. But it has been found in experimental researches that the modulatory effects of acupuncture on autonomic nervous system are not always consistent with each other. Because in the animal studies on the mechanism of acupuncture intervention, the anesthetic agent has to be used and definitely affects the activities of the autonomic nervous system while playing its pharmacological effects. Hence, it is very significant to explore the rational application of anes…

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction in mild traumatic brain injury: a review of related pathophysiology and symptoms.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a vital role in maintaining and regulating homeostatic processes. ANS dysfunction has been reported in patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), but its role in mild TBI (mTBI) is understudied. The objective of this review is to elucidate the role of ANS dysfunction following mTBI and the underlying pathophysiology specifically neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, oxidative stress, and altered cerebral blood flow. ANS dysfunction is thought to be one of the many factors contributing to clinical features following mTBI including hea…

Novel RNA-targeted therapies for hereditary ATTR amyloidosis and their impact on the autonomic nervous system.

PURPOSE: Transthyretin-mediated hereditary amyloidosis (hATTR amyloidosis) is a multisystemic disease with heterogeneous clinical presentation. Hallmarks of the disease are sensory-motor and autonomic neuropathy and cardiomyopathy. Two disease-modifying drugs, inotersen (an antisense oligonucleotide) and patisiran (a small interfering RNA agent), were recently approved for the treatment of hATTR polyneuropathy. We here review the results of the RNA-targeted therapy clinical trials with special emphasis on the endpoints measuring autonomic symptoms and function. METHODS: Literature review. We

Electro convulsive therapy: Modification of its effect on the autonomic nervous system using anti-cholinergic drugs.

The antidepressant efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is correlated to the quality of the seizure as measured by EEG but has also been linked to the magnitude of changes in hemodynamic variables. Muscarinic receptor antagonists are frequently used in the treatment, and are known to affect the hemodynamic response. We hypothesized that atropine and glycopyrrolate alter the hemodynamic and autonomic hormonal response to ECT. In a randomized, cross-over study design 23 patients received either atropine, glycopyrrolate or placebo before ECT. Hemodynamic variable, EEG and EMG, and blood ad

Non-pharmacological Modulation of the Autonomic Nervous System for Heart Failure Treatment: Where do We Stand?

INTRODUCTION: An imbalance in the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is a central pathophysiologic mechanism in Heart Failure (HF) and has been a principal target of treatment in these patients. Traditional pharmacologic agents do not provide specific modulation of discrete arms of the ANS, while side effects may lead to poor tolerance. Technological advances have provided a series of invasive methods that may provide a focused effect on the ANS in selected patient groups. Renal denervation, initially targeted for patients with resistant hypertension, has given positive preliminary results in term…

Cardiac arrest attributable to dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury.

Bradycardia is the most common form of dysrhythmia developing after disruption of the sympathetic pathway by a spinal cord injury (SCI), and it can have fatal consequences, including cardiac arrest. Here, we report a case of cardiac arrest developing after cervical SCI attributable to sympathetic hypoactivity. A 26-year-old male pedestrian was admitted after a traffic accident. Radiologically, fractures were apparent at the C6-7 bilateral articular facets, and cord contusion with hemorrhage was evident at C4-7. During his stay in ICU, intermittent bradycardia was noted, but the symptoms were n

Anatomic relationships of the pelvic autonomic nervous system in female cadavers: clinical applications to pelvic surgery.

BACKGROUND: The integrity of the pelvic autonomic nervous system is essential for proper bowel, bladder, and sexual function. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the anatomic path of the pelvic autonomic system and to examine relationships to clinically useful landmarks. STUDY DESIGN: Detailed dissections were performed in 17 female cadavers. Relationships of the superior hypogastric plexus to aortic bifurcation and midpoint of sacral promontory were examined; the length and width of plexus was documented. Path and width of right and left hypogastric nerves were recorded…

Malfunctioning of the autonomic nervous system in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: It is hypothesised that the autonomic nervous system responds differently to various stressors in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) compared with healthy controls. The goal is to systematically review the scientific literature addressing the functioning of the autonomic nervous system in patients with CFS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All studies that were identified through electronic databases (PubMed and Web of Science) were screened for eligibility based on the selection criteria and assessed (two independent raters) for methodological quality using a methodological che…

Characteristic features of migraine in schoolchildren and adolescents and its relationship with autonomic nervous system disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The studies about autonomic nervous system (ANS) disorders in adult migraineurs show conflicting results with limited data on ANS function in childhood and adolescence. This study aimed to investigate ANS function in childhood migraine. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The migraine and control groups consisted of 35 migraineurs and 30 healthy children, respectively. In both groups, heart rate interval variation (RRIV) and sympathetic skin response (SSR) were used as noninvasive ANS function tests. RESULTS: No significant differences in age and gender distribution were found between the study…

[Heart rate variability as a method of assessing the autonomic nervous system in polycystic ovary syndrome].

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder associated with several cardiometabolic risk factors, such as central obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension. These factors are associated with adrenergic overactivity, which is an important prognostic factor for the development of cardiovascular disorders. Given the common cardiometabolic disturbances occurring in PCOS women, over the last years studies have investigated the cardiac autonomic control of these patients, mainly based on heart rate variability (HRV). Thus, in this review, we wil

Autonomic nervous system activity in premature and full-term infants from theoretical term to 7 years.

The premature population reaching theoretical term suffers from a major deficit in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity, as can be seen from heart rate variability indices. Whether this autonomic function recovers in the long term is not yet established. Thus, we analyzed and compared ANS activity indices, at birth or at the time of the theoretical term, and at ages 2-3 and 6-7 years, in two populations: a group of 30 premature children and a reference group of 14 full-term age-matched newborns. Using Fourier Transform analysis, we studied 24-h ECG Holter recordings to establish heart rate …

Antral gastric motility impairement and autonomic nervous system dysfunction in patients with pancreatic cancer (preliminary results).

The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of pancreatic carcinoma on gastric motility and autonomic system activity in patients before surgery. Patients with histologically confirmed pancreatic cancer were studied. Our results show that gastric dysrrhythmias are continuously present in patients with pancreatic cancer both with and without gastric emptying delay. Antral distribution of meal suggests the presence of impaired proximal gastric response to meal due to diminished autonomic nervous system function and impaired myoelectric gastric activity in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction in children with severe tetanus: dissociation of cardiac and vascular sympathetic control.

The medical records of ten pediatric patients with a clinical diagnosis of tetanus were reviewed retrospectively. The heart rate and blood pressure of all tetanus patients were measured noninvasively every hour during the first two weeks of hospitalization. Six of ten tetanus patients presented clinical evidence of sympathetic hyperactivity (group A) and were compared with a control group consisting of four children who required mechanical ventilation for diseases other than tetanus (group B). Heart rate and blood pressure simultaneously and progressively increased to a maximum by day 7. The i

Concordance between anxiety and autonomic nervous system activity in subjects at genetic risk for affective disorder.

Correlations between electrodermal and heart rate indices of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and measures of state and trait anxiety were examined in 22 high-risk subjects, who had a parent with bipolar affective disorder, and in controls. Relatively consistent and significant correlations between anxiety and ANS "arousal" at rest and under stress were found in high-risk subjects, but not in controls. Relationships between electrodermal laterality and anxiety, and between electrodermal activity and heart rate, were also observed only in the high-risk group. The data suggest a unique co…

Hexamethonium: a probe to assess autonomic nervous system involvement in upper gastrointestinal functions in conscious sheep.

Hexamethonium, which inhibits cholinergic transmission by preventing acetylcholine release, has been considered an ideal reference drug for the blockade of autonomic ganglia, Auerbach plexus and reflex gastrointestinal secretions. The degree of inhibition of ruminant gastrointestinal functions with this reference drug were as follows: cyclical contractions of the reticulo-rumen and abomasal motility greater than gastric acid secretion and duodenal migrating myoelectrical complexes. Although reduced at high dosages, the initiation of migrating myoelectric complexes was enhanced at clinically us
