[Health protection guideline of passenger transport stations and transportation facilities during COVID-19 outbreak].

During COVID-19 outbreak, the transportation industries are faced with the more burdensome tasks of outbreak prevention and control as well as ensuring smooth transportation. It is important to organize transportation in order to restore the order of production and life, ensure the normal economic and social operation, and control the outbreak in the whole society. From the perspective of health, this guideline puts forward technical requirements on the operation management, personnel requirements and health protection of passenger transportation places such as aviation, railway, subway, bus, …

Inflight anxiety conditions presenting with "break-off" symptoms.

The psychological dimension of disorientation is explored through two experienced pilots who developed inflight anxiety conditions. These were associated with "break-off" symptoms, which are inflight sensations of separation from the ground, the environment, and the aircraft. Following extensive psychiatric and medical evaluations, one aviator was diagnosed as having agoraphobia without panic disorder, and the other as having an otherwise unspecified anxiety disorder. These patient reports demonstrate the need for the clinical aerospace medicine specialist to investigate inflight anxiety condi

Values-Based Leadership in Modern Medicine: Lessons From the Naval Submarine Force.

Preventable medical errors remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. While healthcare systems have achieved safety improvements by adopting protocols from commercial aviation, such as surgical checklists and Crew Resource Management, broad safety gains have arguably stalled. Commercial aviation relies on highly standardized environments, whereas healthcare is characterized by extreme biologic unpredictability and the need for rapid, decentralized decision-making. To break through this safety plateau, healthcare leaders must dismantle rigid hierarchies, intimidatin…

RESULTS: The findings reveal that turbulence, fear of enclosed spaces, and media portrayals of aviation accidents are significant triggers. Coping strategies such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, and spiritual methods (e.g., praying) are commonly employed to manage flight anxiety. DISCUSSION: Airline pilots, together with international aviation psychologists and aviation medicine experts, endorsed the safety-critical importance and value of screening pilots for post-COVID-19 impairments. Given the numerous practical implications of implementing such a strategy, we recommend that pilots be …

Spatial Disorientation Event During Flight Due to Proposed Reverse-Dip Visual Illusion.

BACKGROUND: Spatial disorientation is a leading nontechnical cause of fatal military aviation accidents, triggered by insufficient or misleading cues mainly from the visual and vestibular systems. Spatial disorientation accounts for 20-38% of fatal military aviation accidents, but case reports describing specific illusions during actual flight are rare. CASE REPORT: On a clear night, an aerial refueling tanker was cruising at 16,000 ft (4877 m), while an F-15I fighter aircraft was 3 mi behind and 971 ft (296 m) below. About 100 s before a near collision, the fighter pilot switched to Air-to-A…

Pre-training heart rate variability as a predictor of Air Force Academy completion.

INTRODUCTION: Operational pilots are required to perform complex tasks under high stress and uncertainty. One of the major challenges of aviation medicine is the selection of suitable candidates to serve as pilots. The vagal nerve is a crucial moderator of stress responses, and its activity (indexed by heart rate variability, HRV) reflects psycho-physiological resilience and has been shown to predict performance in various settings. However, its predictive value in pilot training has not been examined. This study examined the relationship between HRV and success in an intensive and long pilot …

An investigation of the effects of sand and dust storms in the North East Sahara Desert on Turkish airports and PM10 values: 7 and 8 April, 2013 events.

Between April 7 and April 10, 2013, a cyclone with a value of 995 hPa that developed in the central Mediterranean transported dust from the Sahara Desert towards Turkey. At 13 airports in Turkey, dust haze and widespread dust were seen during different occasions in this period and caused the observation of so-called "Blowing dust events." This cyclone blew dust towards the Cappadocia airport, and the prevailing visibility decreased to 3800 m, making it the lowest value measured during the transition of this cyclone. In this study, Aviation Routine Weather Report (Metar) and Aviation Selected S…

Technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials.

INTRODUCTION: Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) are ubiquitous throughout the earth's crust. Human manipulation of NORM for economic ends, such as mining, ore processing, fossil fuel extraction, and commercial aviation, may lead to what is known as "technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials," often called TENORM. The existence of TENORM results in an increased risk for human exposure to radioactivity. Workers in TENORM-producing industries may be occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation. TENORM industries may release significant amounts of radioactiv…

Team decision-making in high-stakes time-pressured environments: what helps and what hinders?

PURPOSE: Team decision-making is central to effective practice in high-acuity healthcare environments, yet most decision-making research in medicine remains focused on individuals rather than teams. This narrative review synthesizes evidence across various fields, including aviation, military, crisis response, and team sport, to identify key factors that influence team decision-making in time-bound, high-stakes settings, and to examine how these insights may inform practice in acute care and resuscitation medicine. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE and Scopus databases following previou…

Shared responsibility for managing fatigue: Hearing the pilots.

In commercial aviation, fatigue is defined as a physiological state of reduced mental or physical performance capability resulting from sleep loss, extended wakefulness, circadian phase, and/or workload. The International Civil Aviation Organisation mandates that responsibility for fatigue risk management is shared between airline management, pilots, and support staff. However, to date, the majority of research relating to fatigue mitigations in long range operations has focused on the mitigations required or recommended by regulators and operators. Little research attention has been paid to t…
