Lysozyme and Bacillus subtilis improve growth performance, nutrient utilization, physiological stress indices, intestinal integrity, and gene expression of heat-stressed broilers.

Feed additives play a crucial role in enhancing the poultry's overall performance, whether by meeting their needs or helping to overcome various challenges, especially during heat stress. This study examined the effects of adding lysozyme and Bacillus subtilis on growth indices, lipid profiles, immune responses, gut integrity, and gene expression in heat-stressed broilers. A total of 600 one-day-old (Ross 308) male chicks were randomly allocated into four treatment groups (six replicates) as follows: CON, a basal diet without feed additives; B.S, a basal diet supplemented with B. subtilis (500…

Proteomic profiles revealed enzymatic activities associated with the flavor formation of salted shrimp paste influenced by Bacillus subtilis K-C3 inoculation.

Enzymatic proteomic profiles were examined to comprehend the predominant enzymes involved in the flavor development of salted shrimp paste influenced by Bacillus subtilis K-C3 inoculation (Inoc), compared to those without inoculation (CON). Inoc showed greater proteolytic, lipolytic, and chitinolytic activities than CON (P < 0.05) throughout 30 days of fermentation, indicating B. subtilis's ability to accelerate the fermentation rate and render distinctive flavor profiles to shrimp paste. Among 50 differential abundance proteins (DAPs), 24 DAPs were identified as potential key regulating enzym…

Glucose protects the cell membrane, Na+/K+-ATPase, nucleic acids, and proteins in Bacillus subtilis spores under high pressure thermal sterilization.

The extreme resistance of bacterial spores to sterilization makes them a major concern to the food industry and consumers. In this study, the effect of glucose on the inactivation of Bacillus subtilis spores by high pressure thermal sterilization (HPTS) was evaluated. The results showed that the protective effects of glucose increased with the increase in its concentration. Compared with the HPTS control (no addition of glucose), the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase was increased, the leakage of proteins and the release of 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA) was decreased, and the vibrational streng…

Recombinant Bacillus subtilis spores expressing cholera toxin B subunit and Helicobacter pylori urease B confer protection against H. pylori in mice.

Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric cancer and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. The limitations of current therapies for H. pylori infection include poor compliance and antibiotic resistance. Therefore, an effective anti-H. pylori vaccine would be an alternative or complement to antibiotic treatment. Urease B (UreB) is considered an ideal vaccine antigen against H. pylori infection. In this study, cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), a mucosal adjuvant, was used to enhance the immunogenicity of a novel Bacillus subtilis spore vaccine …

Red light activates the sigmaB-mediated general stress response of Bacillus subtilis via the energy branch of the upstream signaling cascade.

The sigma(B)-dependent general stress response in the common soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis can be elicited by a range of stress factors, such as starvation or an ethanol, salt, or heat shock, via a complex upstream signaling cascade. Additionally, sigma(B) can be activated by blue light via the phototropin homologue YtvA, a component of the environmental branch of the signaling cascade. Here we use a reporter-gene fusion to show that sigma(B) can also be activated by red light via the energy branch of its upstream signaling cascade. Deletion mutagenesis and homologous overproduction experim…
