Comparative Effectiveness of 2 Next-Generation Scatter Radiation Shielding Systems.

BACKGROUND: Scatter radiation is a health risk for personnel in x-ray-guided procedure rooms. This study compared the effectiveness of scatter radiation reduction from 2 next-generation radiation shielding systems. METHODS: Vertical poles with mounted radiation survey meters were positioned at 6 points around a catheterization laboratory imaging table where procedural staff typically stand. Meters were mounted on vertical tracks where the sensor could be raised on the track with stops every 20 cm (up to 200 cm). Fluoroscopy (15 frames per second) was then performed on an anthropomorphic phant

Analysis of radiation exposure among pediatric trauma patients at national trauma centers.

BACKGROUND: Injured children undergo radiologic studies as part of trauma evaluations. Children are more sensitive than adult patients to the effects of ionizing radiation. Few studies have described the radiation exposure to pediatric patients during trauma evaluations. We sought to describe the rate of use of radiology studies and to estimate the effective dose of radiation delivered to pediatric trauma patients presenting to trauma centers within the United States. METHODS: We performed an analysis of pediatric patients younger than 19 years who presented to an American College of Surgery-

Examining the role of radiation risk perception in patient decision-making for diagnostic imaging procedures: Insights from a multi-centre study across diverse populations.

INTRODUCTION: Ionising radiation-based diagnostic imaging is crucial for modern medical care and carries potential hazards, including the risk of radiation-induced cancer at cumulative higher doses. Patients' perceptions significantly influence decisions related to diagnostic imaging procedures. Despite advancements in information and technology, knowledge gaps and communication barriers persist, leading to misconceptions and anxieties. METHODS: This multi-centre cross-sectional study assessed the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes of 628 patients regarding radiation risks. Stratified rand

Endothelial activation with prothrombotic response in irradiated microvascular recipient veins.

BACKGROUND: Surgical wounds within previously irradiated tissues are common in reconstructive surgery and subject to an increased incidence of postoperative complications due to vascular dysfunction, including thrombosis in both microvascular anastomosis and the microcirculatory bed. However, there is no study that has described gene expression patterns in radiated human blood vessels. This study aims to determine if radiation can induce changes in gene expression that can promote thrombus formation in human microvascular recipient veins. METHODS: Paired biopsies from radiated recipient veins

Development and validation of an interpretable radiomic nomogram for severe radiation proctitis prediction in postoperative cervical cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Radiation proctitis is a common complication after radiotherapy for cervical cancer. Unlike simple radiation damage to other organs, radiation proctitis is a complex disease closely related to the microbiota. However, analysis of the gut microbiota is time-consuming and expensive. This study aims to mine rectal information using radiomics and incorporate it into a nomogram model for cheap and fast prediction of severe radiation proctitis prediction in postoperative cervical cancer patients. METHODS: The severity of the patient's radiation proctitis was graded according to the RTOG

Pain Drawings Improve Subgrouping of Low Back Pain Patients.

BACKGROUND: Subgrouping of low back pain (LBP) patients may be improved when pain drawings are combined with the painDETECT (PD-Q) questionnaire. We hypothesized that (1) different LBP subgroups determined by their pain radiation show different clinical patterns and (2) the occurrence of neuropathic symptoms depends on pain radiation. METHODS: A total of 19,263 acute (< 6 weeks' duration), subacute (6 to 12 weeks), and chronic (> 3 months) LBP patients were allocated prospectively into 4 groups based on the location of pain drawings on a manikin and compared regarding neuropathic pain compone

Breast cancer incidence and mortality in population studies of radiation exposure: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: While breast cancer risk from high-dose ionising radiation is known, uncertainties remain about risks at lower doses and risk-modifying factors. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of publications on radiation-associated risk of breast cancer in women. METHODS: We included studies published in 2005-2022 that assessed breast cancer incidence or mortality in women exposed to ionising radiation. Risk of bias was evaluated. Random-effects meta-analyses estimated excess relative risks per gray (ERR/Gy). RESULTS: Of the 3522 articles screened, 106 met the inclusion crite

Changes in inflammatory blood parameters in patients with radiation-related complications due to radiotherapy for uveal melanoma.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Radiation retinopathy is a common cause of visual impairment following ocular radiotherapy, and systemic inflammatory activity may contribute to retinal vascular damage. Understanding inflammatory mechanisms may support earlier identification of patients at risk and improve clinical monitoring strategies. BACKGROUND: Radiation retinopathy is a vision-threatening complication of radiotherapy for uveal melanoma and has traditionally been considered a localised microvascular disorder. However, the potential contribution of systemic inflammation to its development remains uncl

Frequency of radiation recall dermatitis in adult cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: The re-occurrence of an inflammatory skin reaction which is limited to previously irradiated areas after the administration of a promoting agent is called radiation recall dermatitis. Despite a number of case reports no systematic analysis about the frequency of the phenomenon exists. Therefore we performed an observation study in order to obtain information about this phenomenon in clinical practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 142 patients who underwent palliative radiotherapy were included in the study. The skin reaction at the day of completion of radiotherapy was documented and the

Radiation proctitis. Clinical and pathological manifestations, therapy and prophylaxis of acute and late injurious effects of radiation on the rectal mucosa.

BACKGROUND: Often the rectum is the dose-limiting organ in curative radiation therapy of pelvic malignancies. It reacts with serous, mucoid, or more rarely bloody diarrhea. METHODS: A research for reports on prophylactic and supportive therapies of radiation-induced proctitis was performed (Medline, Cancerlit, and others). RESULTS: No proven effective prophylactic local or systemic therapies of radiation proctitis exist. Also, no reasonable causal medication is known. In the treatment of late radiation sequelae no clinically tested certain effective therapy exists, too. Antiinflammatory, ste

Radiation Exposure in Percutaneous Zadek Osteotomy vs Open Haglund Resection: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopy is a vital imaging technique in orthopaedic surgery, particularly with the growing adoption of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Because of their increased reliance on intraoperative imaging, MIS techniques may necessitate greater use of fluoroscopy and radiation compared with open procedures; therefore, the use of modern mini C-arm systems is recommended to mitigate radiation exposure. Although MIS offers significant benefits, its use also raises concerns regarding radiation exposure for both patients and surgical staff. This study evaluated radiation dose and fluorosc

A comprehensive review on p38MAPK signaling as a potent radioprotector in testis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that the activation of p38MAPK signaling plays a crucial role in regulating gonadal cell fate decisions in both mouse and human. Excessive activation of p38MAPK by radiation significantly causes testicular damage and negatively affects the male reproductive function. Therefore, fine-tuned regulation of p38MAPK signaling is critical in both physiological and pathological conditions. RESULT: This review summarizes the impact of p38MAPK signaling on testicular germ cells and microenvironment under normal condition. The relationship between radiation, react

Staff exposure to ionizing radiation in a major trauma centre.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present paper was to determine the safety of staff members with regard to ionizing radiation in a major trauma centre in a 19-month period. METHODS AND RESULTS: A group of five doctors, five nurses and a trauma orderly wore personal radiation monitors under lead aprons while at work. The highest individual cumulative result after 586 days was 0.18 mSv for a nurse. If the exposure rate to ionizing radiation was constant, this would be equivalent to 0.114 mSv per year. Therefore the results are well below the recommended occupational dose limit of 20 mSv per year.

IL-8 and IL-6 bystander signalling in human glioblastoma cells exposed to gamma radiation.

BACKGROUND: Exposure of cells to ionising radiation causes the release of several factors, such as cytokines, which are likely to be involved in some biological effects occurring in the irradiated cells and in the neighbouring non-irradiated cells (i.e. bystander effect). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The release of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 in the culture medium of irradiated human glioblastoma cells was investigated using an ELISA technique. Immunocytochemistry was used to investigate the expression of corresponding cell membrane receptors in irradiated cells and in cells cultured with medium co

Antioxidants attenuate atherosclerotic plaque development in a balloon-denuded and -radiated hypercholesterolemic rabbit.

BACKGROUND: Oxidation of lipoproteins is considered to be a key contributor to atherogenesis. Antioxidants are potential antiatherogenic agents because they can inhibit lipoprotein oxidation. Radiation has been shown to increase oxidative stress leading to increased atherogenesis. This study is designed to test the potential of antioxidants to inhibit atherosclerotic plaque progression in balloon-denuded and -radiated rabbits. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two groups of New Zealand white rabbits (n=36) were fed with 1% cholesterol diet (control diet) or with 1% cholesterol diet containing a mixture of
