The bacteriology of lower respiratory infections in Papua New Guinean and Australian indigenous children.

Indigenous children in Australia and children in Papua New Guinea (PNG) share a high burden of respiratory disease. In PNG the focus has been on pneumonia as a major cause of mortality. While pneumonia incidence remains high in Australian Indigenous children, improved access to better health care has resulted in reduced mortality. However, severe and recurrent pneumonia are risk factors for chronic suppurative lung disease or bronchiectasis in Australian Indigenous children. Bronchiectasis is associated with significant morbidity, and early death in adulthood. This paper includes an outline of

Bacteriology in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in patients admitted to hospital.

We investigated the bacterial flora and antimicrobial sensitivity in sputum from patients admitted to hospital with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) in order to recommend the best empirical treatment for these patients. The survey was a retrospective study of all patients admitted to Hvidovre hospital with the diagnosis AECOPD during 2004. A total of 118 patients were included. Microscopy, culture and sensitivity testing investigated their sputums. Clinical and paraclinical features were collected from the patients' files. Among the 118 patients, 59 (50%) ha

Factors affecting the bacteriology of deep neck infection: a retrospective study of 128 patients.

CONCLUSIONS: Broad-spectrum antibiotics are advocated for treating deep neck infection. Anaerobic coverage is necessary, especially in odontogenic cases. The presence of diabetes, infection of the parotid space and an obvious odontogenic source of infection can aid in determining the causative organisms. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the bacteriology in deep neck infections and identify the factors that influenced the causative pathogens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of 212 patients who were diagnosed as having deep neck infections at the National Taiwan University Hospital b…

Bacteriology of medically refractory acute otitis media in children: a 9-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the causative organisms for medically refractory acute otitis media (AOM) in children, and to recommend the appropriate antibiotics for these patients. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: The medical records for 671 children (1258 ears) undergoing myringotomies between January 1993 and December 2001 were retrospectively reviewed. "Medically refractory" AOM is defined as AOM requiring emergency myringotomy because of toxicity persisting despite second-phase antibiotics. Of these, 18 children were enrolled in our study, with 25 of the ears affected by medi

Scientific triumphalism and learning from facts: bacteriology and the "Spanish flu" challenge of 1918.

The devastating influenza pandemic known as 'Spanish flu', which killed at least 20 million people all over the world in 1918, was responsible for the first bitter blow inflicted on triumphant bacteriology, fortified by the series of resounding successes achieved in identifying the pathogenic agents of terrible diseases such as anthrax, cholera, tuberculosis, plague, and syphilis. Over-confidence and the idea, born of the Pasteur revolution, that every infectious disease was caused by a bacterium, had led the scientific community to accept the theory put forward by the German bacteriologist, R…

The bacteriology of pulmonary tuberculosis in a population with high human immunodeficiency virus seroprevalence.

SETTING: A public sector urban university hospital in Soweto, South Africa. OBJECTIVE: To describe the utility of sputum smear microscopy and the prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistance to antituberculosis drugs according to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) serostatus in adults. DESIGN: A retrospective descriptive study of consecutive cases using a record review. RESULTS: We studied 412 adults with culture-proven pulmonary tuberculosis, of whom 185 (44.9%) were HIV-seropositive and had a significantly lower sputum smear positivity than HIV seronegatives (68% versus 79%, P < 0.

The bacteriology of obstructive pneumonitis. A prospective study using ultrasound-guided transthoracic needle aspiration.

Obstructive pneumonitis, the opacity that develops distal to an obstructing endobronchial lesion or external compression, is actually a combination of atelectasis, bronchiectasis with mucus plugging, and true parenchymal inflammation. In the majority of cases, it is usually not possible to determine whether infection is present or not from the radiographic findings alone. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bacteriology of obstructive pneumonitis and the influence of this result on the treatment of patients. From March 1992 to February 1993, 26 consecutive patients (20 men and six women)…

Bacteriology of infections in a rural tropical area of Kenya: isolates and antibiotic susceptibility.

No microbial data are available for rural tropical areas. Yet most people in Africa live in rural areas where the burdens of infectious diseases remain the primary cause for morbidity and mortality. A pilot study was done by culturing midstream urine from patient with dysuria (100 with Gram-negative fermentative rods), blood from patients with FUO (55/307 positive) and swabs from patients with infected wounds (29 with Staphylococcus aureus). Bacteria were identified and susceptibility tests were performed according to protocols. Klebsiella was the most common isolate from urine (48%). The over

Community-acquired bacteremia in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: clinical presentation, bacteriology, and outcome.

PURPOSE: Community-acquired bacteremia is an easily treatable infection occurring in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although other studies have reported bacterial infections in AIDS patients, none have clearly described the clinical presentation of these patients. In this survey, we sought to define how frequently AIDS patients presented to our institution with community-acquired bacteremia; which organisms and sources of bacteremia were involved; the frequency that these patients presented with abnormal vital signs and white blood cell counts; and the in-hospital out

Treponemal serologic tests; experiences of the Bacteriology Laboratory, California State Department of Public Health.

In a study of the relationship of clinical impression regarding syphilis and age, sex and pregnancy status to treponemal serologic test reactivity, it was noted that in diagnostic "problem cases" the standard lipid serologic test titers did not differentiate between syphilitic and biologic false positive reactors. Preliminary data indicated that heroin addiction may be a source of biologic false reactions and that pregnant women with standard serologic test reactivity have a lower treponemal reactivity rate than other women with lipid serologic reactivity.

Brain Abscesses in Domestic Ruminants: Clinicopathological and Bacteriological Approaches.

Brain abscesses in ruminants often arise from primary infection foci, leading to an unfavorable prognosis for affected animals. This highlights the need for comprehensive studies on brain abscesses across different ruminant species. We retrospectively investigated medical records of epidemiological, clinical, neuroimaging, anatomopathological, and bacteriological findings in six ruminants (three goats, two cows, and one sheep) diagnosed with brain abscesses. All animals studied were female. Apathy (50%), compulsive walking (33%), decreased facial sensitivity (33%), head pressing (33%), seizure

Bacteriological profile of the nasopharynx in patients with type 2 diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Caring for people with diabetes is a challenge for doctors. GPs should be diagnostically vigilant and pay attention even to unusual symptoms reported by the patient, as they can progress quickly, impeding effective treatment. Targeted treatment of the bacteriological infection improves the prognosis in this group of patients. Its condition is to perform bacteriological tests. Statistics show that the infectious flora differ between people with diabetes and the general population. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate in a group of patients with type 2 diabetes without
