Anaerobic osteomyelitis. A new experimental rabbit model.

Experimental studies of osteomyelitis have been hampered by methodologic problems. For inducing experimental anaerobic osteomyelitis, the medullary cavity of the proximal tibial metaphysis of five New Zealand white rabbits was excavated and filled with a polyvinyl alcohol sponge. On the right side, 1 ml of a suspension containing Bacteroides fragilis (10(7) colony-forming units/ml) was injected, while on the left side, Ringer's solution was used as a control substance. Within five weeks, all animals developed clinical signs of osteomyelitis. The findings were verified by roentgenograms and bon…

Immune mechanisms in the prevention of intra-abdominal abscess formation.

Bacteroides fragilis is the most commonly isolated anaerobe from intraabdominal infections. In experimental models of intraabdominal sepsis, B. fragilis has been shown to be uniquely virulent. Some of these virulence traits are due to the capsular polysaccharide of this organism. Immunity to infection secondary to B. fragilis seems to involve both arms of the immune system. Humoral immunity (complement, antibody and PMNs) is critical to clearance of these bacteria from the blood stream. Cellular immune mechanisms predominate against intraabdominal abscess formation. Adoptive transfer experimen…

[Anaerobic microflora of patients with suppurative and septic complications after non-hospital abortions].

Microflora of pathological biosubstrates from 25 patients aged from 18 to 41 years with criminal abortion complications such as sepsis, septic shock, septicemia, and septic pyemia, peritonitis and endometritis of various severity was studied. Obligate anaerobic organisms in association with facultative anaerobes were detected in 84 per cent of the patients. Bacteroids were isolated from operation materials of 36 per cent of the patients. Bacteroids in association with Staphylococcus aureus, peptostreptococci and enterococci were recorded in 16, 8 and 24 per cent of the patients, respectively.

[To the role of Chlamydia infection in the development of dry eye].

The study deals with the possible etiological role of Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, and bacteroid infections in the development of chronic conjunctivitis and dry eye (DE). A hundred and fifty patients with DE and chronic conjunctivitis were examined. Conjunctival scrapes were examined by direct immunofluorescence for evidence of Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, and bacteroid infections. DE was verified by the Schirmer test and the Norn test. Ninety-five (63.3%) persons were found to be infected. GE was diagnosed in 84 (56%) of the 150 patients. Analysis of infection rates revealed Chlam

Experimental Shigella infections in laboratory animals. I. Antagonism by human normal flora components in gnotobiotic mice.

Germfree mice were associated with selected species of human intestinal bacteria and then challenged with a streptomycin-resistant Shigella flexneri strain. Antagonism against Shigella was most pronounced in mice associated with Escherichia coli and least pronounced in mice associated with Bacteroides fragilis. A moderate degree of antagonism could be demonstrated in mice associated with either Streptococcus faecalis or Bifidobacterium adolescentis. Shigella persisted in the cecal contents of E. coli-associated mice at very low, stable levels. Shigella populations were reduced to levels below …

Microbiota-derived lysophosphatidylcholine alleviates Alzheimer's disease pathology via suppressing ferroptosis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a pervasive neurodegenerative disorder, and new approaches for its prevention and therapy are critically needed. Here, we elucidate a gut-microbiome-brain axis that offers actionable perspectives for achieving this objective. Using the 5xFAD mouse model, we identify increased Clostridium abundance and decreased Bacteroides abundance as key features associated with β-amyloid (Aβ) burden. Treatment with Bacteroides ovatus, or its associated metabolite lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), significantly reduces Aβ load and ameliorates cognitive impairment. Mechanistically, LP…

Antimicrobial therapy of anaerobic infections, 1991.

Most anaerobic infections are polymicrobial and must be treated with agents active against a variety of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Antimicrobial therapy is used both to contain infections and to treat those that have not been contained (bacteremia). Bacterial resistance, especially to penicillins and tetracyclines, but also to newer agents of other classes, continues to increase and often requires treatment with more than one drug. Combination therapy is also frequently necessary in serious infections, and is indicated for empiric management before receiving results of in vitro micro

Beta-lactamase activity in anaerobic bacteria.

A diverse group of anaerobic bacteria representing a spectrum of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics was studied to characterize their beta-lactamase activity and relate it to resistance. The Bacteroides fragilis organisms had moderate resistance and produced a cephalosporinase with low activity. The Clostridium ramosum was intermediate in resistance and had intermediate, inducible beta-lactamase activity. The B. clostridiiformis organism was highly resistant, produced a potent inducible penicillinase, and had a barrier to the penicillin substrates. Only the beta-lactamase of C. ramosum fit …

Gut microbiota aggravates neutrophil extracellular traps-induced pancreatic injury in hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis.

Hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis (HTGP) is featured by higher incidence of complications and poor clinical outcomes. Gut microbiota dysbios … n that exacerbates pancreatic injury and systemic inflammation. We find that decreased abundance of Bacteroides uniformis in gut microbiota impairs taurine production and increases IL-17 release in colon that triggers NETs formation. Moreover, Bacteroides uniformis or taurine inhibits the activation of NF-κB and IL-17 signaling pathways in neutrophils which h …

Delivery Mode Affects Stability of Early Infant Gut Microbiota.

Mode of delivery strongly influences the early infant gut microbiome. Children born by cesarean section (C-section) lack Bacteroides species until 6-18 months of age. One hypothesis is that these differences stem from lack of exposure to the maternal vaginal microbiome. Here, we re-evaluate this hypothesis by comparing the microbial profiles of 75 infants born vaginally or by planned versus emergent C-section. Multiple children born by C-section have a high abundance of Bacteroides in their first few days of life, but at 2 weeks, both C-section groups lack Bacteroides (primarily according to 1…

Bacteroi des fragilis-derived succinic acid promotes the degradation of uric acid by inhibiting hepatic AMPD2: Insight into how plant-based berberine ameliorates hyperuricemia.

In recent decades, the prevalence of hyperuricemia and gout has increased dramatically due to lifestyle changes. The drugs currently recomme … s in 22 participants by modulating the gut microbiota, which led to an increase in the abundance of Bacteroides and a decrease in Clostridium sensu stricto_1. Furthermore, Bacteroides fragilis was transplanted into ICR mice, and the results showed that Bacteroides fragilis exerted a therapeutic effect on uric acid similar to that of BBR. Notably, succinic aci …
