Tranquilizers and sedative/hypnotics: appropriate use in the elderly.

In treating the elderly patient, it is generally true that the fewer pharmacologic agents needed, the less the potential for drug interactions and puzzling toxic reactions. Nevertheless, sedative/hypnotics and anxiolytic drugs (mostly the benzodiazepines) are safe and effective therapy for the older patient, when the appropriate indications and dosages are observed. On the other hand, the toxic potential of nonbenzodiazepines (eg, barbiturates and pseudobarbiturates) and of even the relatively safe alternatives (eg, chloral hydrate, diphenhydramine, and hydroxyzine) render them less useful for

Neural representations of different features in the observation of table tennis actions.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the neural representations at different features of table tennis serve observation and examined the moderating effects of experience on these representations. METHODS: Twenty-four table tennis athletes and twenty-six nonathletes watched videos of four types of table tennis serves, categorized by serve technique (forehand vs. backhand) and target location (left-side vs. right-side). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and behavioral data were collected during video viewing. RESULTS: Observing different action features activated the action observatio

[How quality of life indices reflect the behaviors of elderly people with dementia on dementia care mapping and the relationship among well-being, ill-being and the behavior category code].

PURPOSE: Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) is an observation and evaluation technique intended to improve the quality of care for elderly people with dementia, based on aims of person-centered care. The purpose of this study was to clarify that well-being and ill-being (WIB) levels affects the behavior category code (BCC) in long-term care insurance facilities. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated people with dementia who used care facilities between April 2005 and July 2007. The evaluation indices used were the 6-hour DCM, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Gottfries-Brane-Steen Sca

Experimental and theoretical investigation of strongly correlated antiferromagnet NdBiTe.

The ZrSiS-class of layered materials offer interesting topological and magnetic characteristics suitable for spintronics applications. In this work, we have synthesized a polycrystalline NdBiTe using solid-state reaction technique and have examined the magnetic properties in 2-300 K temperature range using temperature and field-dependent magnetization measurements. Our magnetic and specific heat data demonstrates a long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in the material below 4.5 K. Furthermore, our isothermal magnetization data show a signature of spin-reorientation below Neel temperature

A parietal region processing numerosity of observed actions: An FMRI study.

When observing others' behavior, it is important to perceive not only the identity of the observed actions (OAs), but also the number of times they were performed. Given the mounting evidence implicating posterior parietal cortex in action observation, and in particular that of manipulative actions, the aim of this study was to identify the parietal region, if any, that contributes to the processing of observed manipulative action (OMA) numerosity, using the functional magnetic resonance imaging technique. Twenty-one right-handed healthy volunteers performed two discrimination tasks while in t

Cholesterol modulates membrane elasticity via unified biophysical laws.

Cholesterol and lipid unsaturation underlie a balance of opposing forces that features prominently in adaptive cell responses to diet and environmental cues. These competing factors have resulted in contradictory observations of membrane elasticity across different measurement scales, requiring chemical specificity to explain incompatible structural and elastic effects. Here, we demonstrate that - unlike macroscopic observations - lipid membranes exhibit a unified elastic behavior in the mesoscopic regime between molecular and macroscopic dimensions. Using nuclear spin techniques and computati

Therapeutic modulation of empathy: pharmacological, neurostimulation, and behavioral approaches.

Empathy is a core neurobiological capacity that enables humans to perceive, understand, and respond to others' experiences, yet its deliberate modulation as a therapeutic target is still in its early stages of scientific development. This manuscript presents a hybrid narrative-scoping review synthesizing evidence across pharmacological, neurostimulation, and behavioral approaches aimed at enhancing or restoring empathic functioning. A structured literature search covering 2014-2025 was conducted across PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus, with emphasis on post-2020 research. Evidence

Invisible traces after traffic accidents: Psychological and behavioral consequences of physical Injuries.

Road traffic crashes are sudden and traumatic events that extend beyond physical injuries, exerting profound adverse effects on individuals' cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. The literature demonstrates that survivors of road traffic crashes may develop a wide range of psychological responses, including Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Acute Stress Disorder, depression, anxiety, traumatic grief, dissociative disorders, sleep disturbances, and avoidance behaviors. The severity and course of these reactions vary depending on multiple factors, such as the nature and intensity of

Effects of a Physiotherapist-Led School-Based Health Education Workshop on Spinal Pain Prevention in Schoolchildren: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Background/Objectives: Spinal pain is common among schoolchildren and is associated with poor postural habits and sedentary behavior. Schools represent an optimal setting for prevention; however, they are also key environments for prevention strategies in children who already experience spinal pain. This study focused on children aged 9-11 years and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a physiotherapist-led, classroom-based workshop as a prevention intervention to improve spinal pain outcomes. Methods: A quasi-experimental single-group pre-post intervention study was conducted in public prim

Micro-mechanism of residual PCE removal from aquifers by in-situ microemulsion: behavior and proportion of mobilization and solubilization.

In-situ microemulsion has shown great potential for remediation of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) contaminated aquifers due to the capacity to enhance DNAPL solubility and mobility. Understanding the pore-scale removal behavior of DNAPL and quantifying proportions of mobilization/solubilization in flushing process are essential to improve remediation efficiency. However, owing to the opacity of aquifer medium, the sand columns commonly used in flushing experiments are hard to reveal the dynamic behaviors and removal mechanism of DNAPLs in aquifer by in-situ microemulsion. In this wor

Brain Source Localization and Functional Connectivity in Group Identity Regulation of Overbidding in Contest.

Contests may be highly effective in eliciting high levels of effort, but they also carry the risk of inefficient resource allocation due to excessive effort (overbidding), squandering valuable social resources. While a growing body of research has focused on how group identity exacerbates out-group conflict, its influence on in-group conflict remains relatively unexplored. This study endeavors to explore the impact of group identity on conflicts within and between groups in competitive environments, thereby addressing gaps in the current research landscape and dissecting the involved neurobiol

Understanding How Experts Do It: A Conceptual Framework for the Open Transversus Abdominis Release Procedure.

BACKGROUND: The safe and effective performance of a posterior component separation via a transversus abdominis release (TAR) requires intraoperative judgement and decision-making skills that are difficult to define, standardize, and teach. We herein present the first qualitative study which builds a framework upon which training and objective evaluation of a TAR can be based. METHODS: Hierarchical and cognitive task analyses for a TAR procedure were performed using semistructured interviews of hernia experts to describe the thoughts and behaviors that exemplify optimal performance. Proteogenomic Characterization of Ovarian HGSC Implicates Mitotic Kinases, Replication Stress in Observed Chromosomal Instability.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure-based therapy (EXP) and behavioral activation (BA) are empirically-supported behavioral intervention techniques that target avoidance and approach behavior to alleviate symptoms. Although EXP is an established treatment for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), the effectiveness of BA for GAD has not been directly tested or compared with that of EXP. This study examined the efficacy of EXP and BA for adults with GAD. METHOD: In a randomized clinical trial (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02807480) with partial blinding in Tulsa, OK, 102 adults with GAD were allocated to manualized, 1

Developmental Changes in Sexual Risk and Substance Use Among African American Females: an Integrated Data Analysis Approach Using Time-varying Effect Models.

The aim of this study was to describe age-related changes in sexual risk and substance use using existing data from three HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention trials conducted in Atlanta, Georgia, that enrolled young African American women. We used two novel analysis methods: integrative data analysis (IDA) and time-varying effect models (TVEM). Each trial collected self-reported behavioral data and vaginal swab specimens assayed for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomonas. Baseline data from all participants and follow-up data from participants not randomized to an active interve

Influence of interdigitation and expander type in the mechanical response of the midpalatal suture during maxillary expansion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The orthopedic Maxillary Expansion (ME) procedure is used for treating the transverse maxillary deficiency. This pathology consists in a smaller transverse dimension in the maxilla and leads to malocclusion. The treatment takes advantage of the existence of the midpalatal suture (MPS), which corresponds to the junction at the palatine bones of its horizontal portions. The technique employs a device, conventionally a palatal expander attached to the posterior teeth, to separate the two maxillary bones in the MPS. The objective of this study was to analyze, using the Fi

Expression of Ki-67 in odontogenic cysts: A comparative study between odontogenic keratocysts, radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic cysts are the most common cysts of the jaws and are formed from the remnants of the odontogenic apparatus. Among these odontogenic cysts, radicular cysts (RCs) (about 60% of all diagnosed jaw cysts), dentigerous cysts (DCs) (16.6% of all jaw cysts) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) (11.2% of all developmental odontogenic cysts) are the most common. The behavior of any lesion is generally reflected by its growth potential. Growth potential is determined by measuring the cell proliferative activity. The cell proliferative activity is measured by various

Stiffening effects of riboflavin/UVA corneal collagen cross-linking is hydration dependent.

The collagen cross-linking is a relatively new treatment option for strengthening the cornea, delaying, and in some cases stopping the progression of keratoconus. The uniaxial tensile experiments are among the most commonly used techniques to assess the effectiveness of this therapeutic option in enhancing tensile properties. In the present study, we investigated the possible effects of hydration on stiffening effects of corneal collagen cross-linking procedure, as measured by the uniaxial tensile testing method. For this purpose, after cross-linking bovine corneas, we let the strips to dehydr

Perceptions of voice therapy from patients diagnosed with primary muscle tension dysphonia and benign mid-membranous vocal fold lesions.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have established the role of behavioral therapy in treating voice problems. However, studies have also identified patient adherence as a limitation in voice therapy effectiveness. Accordingly, an understanding of patient preferences may help to improve adherence and increase voice therapy success. The primary aim of this study was to understand patient-perceived facilitators and barriers influencing voice therapy effectiveness in a group of treatment-seeking individuals with voice disorders. A secondary aim was to examine the relationship between self-reported improvement f
