Effects of five-minute internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy and simplified emotion-focused mindfulness on depressive symptoms: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Notwithstanding a high expectation for internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) for reducing depressive symptoms, many of iCBT programs have limitations such as temporary effects and high drop-out rates, possibly due to their complexity. We examined the effects of a free, simplified, 5-minute iCBT program by comparing it with a simplified emotion-focused mindfulness (sEFM) exercise and with a waiting list control group. METHODS: A total of 974 participants, who were recruited using the website of a market research company, were randomly assigned to the iCBT group, the sE

Affective and emotional dysregulation as pre-dementia risk markers: exploring the mild behavioral impairment symptoms of depression, anxiety, irritability, and euphoria.

BACKGROUND: Affective and emotional symptoms such as depression, anxiety, euphoria, and irritability are common neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in pre-dementia and cognitively normal older adults. They comprise a domain of Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), which describes their emergence in later life as an at-risk state for cognitive decline and dementia, and as a potential manifestation of prodromal dementia. This selective scoping review explores the epidemiology and neurobiological links between affective and emotional symptoms, and incident cognitive decline, focusing on recent literature

The effects of cognitive behavioral therapy and drug therapy on quality of life and symptoms of patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Psychotherapy and drug therapy are considered useful in quality of life (QOL) and symptoms of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) associated with drug therapy in comparison to drug therapy alone on the QOL and symptoms of IBS patients with diarrhea predominance. This study was a randomized clinical trial on 64 IBS patients. The patients were selected according to Rome III criteria and were assigned into two groups. Bowel symptom severity and frequency scale and QOL-IBS were used to investigate the

The use of psychotropic drugs for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia among residents in long-term care facilities in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the use of psychotropic drugs (PDs) was related to behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) focusing on the prevalence, numbers of symptoms, severity, and care burden among the elderly with BPSD living in long-term care facilities in Japan. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among older people with dementia or similar symptoms (n = 312) using a questionnaire for care staff in 10 selected long-term care facilities. A brief questionnaire form of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory was used to assess BPSD. RESULTS: PDs were used in 45% among a

Lack of parvalbumin in mice leads to behavioral deficits relevant to all human autism core symptoms and related neural morphofunctional abnormalities.

Gene mutations and gene copy number variants are associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Affected gene products are often part of signaling networks implicated in synapse formation and/or function leading to alterations in the excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance. Although the network of parvalbumin (PV)-expressing interneurons has gained particular attention in ASD, little is known on PV's putative role with respect to ASD. Genetic mouse models represent powerful translational tools for studying the role of genetic and neurobiological factors underlying ASD. Here, we report that PV k

Psychosocial Interventions With Cognitive-Behavioral Components for the Treatment of Cancer-Related Traumatic Stress Symptoms: A Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BackgroundCancer-related traumatic stress symptoms, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can significantly impact the quality of life and psychological adjustment of patients and survivors with cancer. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective intervention previously shown to ameliorate non-cancer-related PTSD. Because of some of the unique aspects of cancer-related traumatic stress, such as the internal and ongoing nature of the traumatic stressor, it is important to review the overall efficacy of CBT interventions in populations with cancer.ObjectiveTo review the findings

Predicting the outcome of a cognitive-behavioral group training for patients with unexplained physical symptoms: a one-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Although Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is effective for Unexplained Physical Symptoms (UPS), some therapists in clinical practice seem to believe that CBT outcome will diminish if psychiatric comorbidity is present. The result is that patients with a psychiatric comorbidity are redirected from treatment for UPS into treatment for mental health problems. To explore whether this selection and allocation are appropriate, we explored whether CBT outcomes in UPS could be predicted by variables assessed at baseline and used in routine-practice assessments. METHODS: Patients (n=162)

Effects of yokukansan, a traditional Japanese medicine, on memory disturbance and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in thiamine-deficient rats.

Effects of yokukansan (TJ-54) on memory disturbance and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) were investigated in thiamine-deficient (TD) rats which were produced by feeding a TD diet for 37 d. Daily oral administration of TJ-54 (0.5, 1.0 g/kg) ameliorated the memory disturbance, anxiety-like behavior, the increase in aggressive behaviors, the decrease in social behaviors, and several neurological symptoms including opisthotonus observed in TD rats, in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, histopathological examinations showed that TJ-54 inhibited the degeneration of neuron

Perceived criticism predicts severity of anxiety symptoms after behavioral treatment in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder with agoraphobia.

In prospective research, psychiatric patients' perceived criticism (PC) from family members has been linked to higher rates of relapse and worse treatment outcome. Researchers have disagreed about whether PC contributes to poor treatment outcomes or whether it merely reflects the severity of a patient's disturbance. In this study, structural equation modeling was used to conduct a cross-lagged panel analysis of the relationship between PC and anxiety symptom severity assessed before and after treatment in anxiety-disordered patients. PC was found to be unrelated to concurrent symptom severity.

Replacing sedentary behavior with physical activity reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression: a study with young adults.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) are movement behaviors that have been associated with mental health. Evidence suggests that replacing SB with PA may influence mental disorders. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing time spent in SB with moderate-intensity PA (MPA) and vigorous-intensity (VPA) on the symptoms of anxiety and depression among college students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a multicenter survey conducted among undergraduate students from eight public universities in Brazil. Data were collected between October 202

Race-related stress, dissociation symptoms, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a community sample of Black Americans.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide rates for Black Americans continue to increase, pointing to the need for additional research on potential risk factors for suicidal ideation and attempts in this population. While race-related stress and dissociation symptoms are consistently associated with suicidal ideation and attempts, the indirect effect of race-related stress on current suicidal ideation and lifetime attempts through dissociation symptoms has not yet been examined in a community sample of trauma-exposed Black Americans. METHOD: Participants (N = 1,121; 92.1% female, Mage = 38.93, SDage = 13.25) recrui

Determinants of healthcare-seeking behavior among women with symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse in gurage zone.

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is relatively common healthcare issue due to its high prevalence, various adverse effects, and challenges for the healthcare system. Women in developing nations are at a higher risk of experiencing this condition. Although POP and its risk factors are more common in low-resource settings, women in these settings often choose not to seek medical attention. Evidence of these women's health-seeking behavior and its determinants is lacking in Ethiopia; particularly in the study area, no study was reported. The aim of this study was to asses determinants of healthcare-se

The predictive value of supervised machine learning models for insomnia symptoms through smartphone usage behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Digital phenotyping can be an innovative and unobtrusive way to improve the detection of insomnia. This study explores the correlations between smartphone usage features (SUF) and insomnia symptoms and their predictive value for detecting insomnia symptoms. METHODS: In an observational study of a German convenience sample, the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and smartphone usage data (e.g., time the screen was active, longest time the screen was inactive in the night) for the previous 7 days were obtained. SUF (e.g., min, mean) were calculated from the smartphone usage data. Corre

Association of sedentary behavior and physical activity with occurrence of signs and symptoms in participants of a cardiac rehabilitation program.

Sedentary behavior (SB) is associated with health impairments, while physical activity (PA) has been a protective factor. It is unclear whether SB and PA are associated with occurrence of signs and/or symptoms (SS) during cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP) exercise sessions. The objective was to evaluate the association between SB and PA with occurrence of SS. Was included 48 patients from a CRP program (64.7 ± 10.4 years-old). Daily time and % of time of SB and weekly time in moderate-to-vigorous-intensity [MVPA], % of MVPA time, steps/day, and steps/minute were accelerometer-measured. Pati

Patterns of sedentary behavior among older women with urinary incontinence and urinary symptoms: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Independent of physical activity, sedentary behavior has emerged as a significant risk factor for health. Particularly, older adults spent as high as 13 h daily on sedentary activities, which account for 98% of their awake times. Although there is growing evidence revealing the potential association between sedentary behavior and urinary incontinence (UI) across populations of different ages, the relationship between sedentary behavior and urinary symptoms in older women, who are twice as likely to have UI than older men, has not been reviewed. This scoping review aimed to synthesi

Mild traumatic brain injury, PTSD symptom severity, and behavioral dyscontrol: a LIMBIC-CENC study.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral dyscontrol occurs commonly in the general population and in United States service members and Veterans (SM/V). This condition merits special attention in SM/V, particularly in the aftermath of deployments. Military deployments frequently give rise to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and deployment-related mild TBI traumatic brain injury (TBI), potentially leading to manifestations of behavioral dyscontrol. OBJECTIVE: Examine associations among PTSD symptom severity, deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury, and behavioral dyscontrol among SM/V. DESIGN: Second
