Electroencephalography theta/beta ratio covaries with mind wandering and functional connectivity in the executive control network.

The ratio between frontal resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) theta and beta frequency power (theta/beta ratio, TBR) is negatively related to cognitive control. It is unknown which psychological processes during resting state account for this. Increased theta and reduced beta power are observed during mind wandering (MW), and MW is related to decreased connectivity in the executive control network (ECN) and increased connectivity in the default mode network (DMN). The goal of this study was to test if MW-related fluctuations in TBR covary with such functional variation in ECN and DMN co

Classification of pallidal oscillations with increasing parkinsonian severity.

The firing patterns of neurons in the basal ganglia are known to become more oscillatory and synchronized from healthy to parkinsonian conditions. Similar changes have been observed with local field potentials (LFPs). In this study, we used an unbiased machine learning approach to investigate the utility of pallidal LFPs for discriminating the stages of a progressive parkinsonian model. A feature selection algorithm was used to identify subsets of LFP features that provided the most discriminatory information for severity of parkinsonian motor signs. Prediction errors <20% were achievable usin

Abnormal temporal dynamics of high-frequency neural oscillations are associated with poor sleep quality in abstinent patients with alcohol use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is a common and clinically significant symptom in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), often persisting during abstinence and increasing the risk of relapse. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying sleep dysfunction in AUD remain poorly understood. Long-range temporal correlations (LRTC) in neural oscillations reflect the temporal organization and excitation-inhibition (E/I) balance of brain networks. While altered LRTC has been observed in various psychiatric and sleep disorders, its role in AUD-and its potential relationship to sleep dysfun

Simultaneous prefrontal-occipital high-definition transcranial direct-current stimulation modulates beta and gamma oscillations serving abstract reasoning.

Recent studies have shown that prefrontal, parietal, and occipital cortices are critical for abstract reasoning and other fluid intelligence tasks, although the contribution of individual regions and possible laterality effects remain poorly understood. Herein, we use an innovative dual-montage, high-definition transcranial direct-current stimulation (HD-tDCS) approach to examine the impact of simultaneously stimulating prefrontal and occipital cortices on the neural oscillatory dynamics underlying abstract reasoning in 44 healthy adults. Across three sessions, participants underwent concurren

Characterizing autogenous and reactive obsessions using theta and beta oscillations under inhibitory demands.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a heterogenous mental health condition that causes significant impairment and is often associated with poor treatment outcomes. The aim of the current study was to examine the association between electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillatory power during inhibitory task performance and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS). OCS was assessed using the well-established the Autogenous-Reactive Obsession (AO-RO) model as the main framework to address its heterogeneous clinical manifestations. The severity of AO and RO, as primary outcome measures, was indexed using

Cross-Frequency Coupling as a Biomarker for Early Stroke Recovery.

BACKGROUND: The application of neuroimaging-based biomarkers in stroke has enriched our understanding of post-stroke recovery mechanisms, including alterations in functional connectivity based on synchronous oscillatory activity across various cortical regions. Phase-amplitude coupling, a type of cross-frequency coupling, may provide additional mechanistic insight. OBJECTIVE: To determine how the phase of prefrontal cortex delta (1-3 Hz) oscillatory activity mediates the amplitude of motor cortex beta (13-20 Hz) oscillations in individual's early post-stroke. METHODS: Participants admitted t

Frontal Beta Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Improves Reversal Learning.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies suggest an association between beta (13-30 Hz) power and reversal learning performance. In search for direct evidence concerning the involvement of beta oscillations in reversal learning, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was applied in a double-blind, sham-controlled and between-subjects design. Exogenous oscillatory currents were administered bilaterally to the frontal cortex at 20 Hz with an intensity of 1 mA peak-to-peak and the effects on reward-punishment based reversal learning were evaluated in hundred-and-eight healthy volunteers. Task-Independent Mental Workload Classification Based Upon Common Multiband EEG Cortical Connectivity.

Efficient classification of mental workload, an important issue in neuroscience, is limited, so far to single task, while cross-task classification remains a challenge. Furthermore, network approaches have emerged as a promising direction for studying the complex organization of the brain, enabling easier interpretation of various mental states. In this paper, using two mental tasks (N-back and mental arithmetic), we present a framework for cross- as well as within-task workload discrimination by utilizing multiband electroencephalography (EEG) cortical brain connectivity. In detail, we constr

Interactions between the anterior cingulate-insula network and the fronto-parietal network during perceptual decision-making.

Information processing in the human brain during cognitively demanding goal-directed tasks is thought to involve several large-scale brain networks, including the anterior cingulate-insula network (aCIN) and the fronto-parietal network (FPN). Recent functional MRI (fMRI) studies have provided clues that the aCIN initiates activity changes in the FPN. However, when and how often these networks interact remains largely unknown to date. Here, we systematically examined the oscillatory interactions between the aCIN and the FPN by using the spectral Granger causality analysis of reconstructed brain

Time-dependent imprinting of gut homing receptors on lymphocytes by migratory antigen presenting cells.

Circadian rhythms synchronize many physiological and immune processes, but their role in coordinating intestinal lymphocyte trafficking remains unclear. Here, we investigated the temporal regulation of gut homing receptors, α4β7 integrin and CCR9 chemokine receptor, on lymphocyte subsets and the involvement of migratory antigen presenting cells 5r4 in this process. Using wild-type and Period 2 (Per2) knockout mice, we analyzed receptor expression on CD4+, CD8+, and B lymphocytes from mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) at four Zeitgeber times (ZT5, ZT11, ZT17, ZT23). We observed circadian oscillatio

Oscillatory motor patterning is impaired in neurofibromatosis type 1: a behavioural, EEG and fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type1 (NF1) is associated with a broad range of behavioural deficits, and an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission has been postulated in this disorder. Inhibition is involved in the control of frequency and stability of motor rhythms. Therefore, we aimed to explore the link between behavioural motor control, brain rhythms and brain activity, as assessed by EEG and fMRI in NF1. METHODS: We studied a cohort of 21 participants with NF1 and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls, with a finger-tapping task requiring pacing at distinct fr

Ventricular arrhythmias in the absence of structural heart disease.

Ventricular arrhythmia (VA) in structurally normal hearts can be broadly considered under non-life-threatening monomorphic and life-threatening polymorphic rhythms. Monomorphic VA is classified on the basis of site of origin in the heart, and the most common areas are the ventricular outflow tracts and left ventricular fascicles. The morphology of the QRS complexes on electrocardiogram is an excellent tool to identify the site of origin of the rhythm. Although these arrhythmias are common and generally carry an excellent prognosis, rare sudden death events have been reported. Very frequent ven

Atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

The epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) and atrial flutter (AFl) are reviewed, and recent developments and controversies in the approach to these arrhythmias are addressed. AF and AFl are the arrhythmias most frequently encountered in clinical practice. Although occasionally unaware of their arrhythmia, patients usually complain of palpitations, weakness, dyspnea, and decreased exercise tolerance. The initial goal of therapy is control of the ventricular rate. Rate control is accomplished with atrioventricular node-blocking agents suc

The alternation of neural oscillations during dual task standing in older adults with low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that the difficulty levels of posture and cognitive tasks and pain could interactively modulate the brain oscillations. Older adults with low back pain (LBP) have poorer postural control than healthy older adults under dual-task conditions. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Hence, this study aimed to investigate alterations in brain activation during dual tasks in older people with LBP. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved older participants with LBP (n = 21) and healthy older adults (n = 18) without a history of LBP. Electroencepha

The Impact of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Functional Connectivity in Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder Evaluated by Directed Transfer Function and Indices Based on Graph Theory.

The objective of this work was to study the impact of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) on the EEG connectivity evaluated by indices based on graph theory, derived from Directed Transfer Function (DTF), in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or with bipolar disorder (BD). The results showed the importance of beta and gamma rhythms. The indices density, degree and clustering coefficient increased in MDD responders in beta and gamma bands after rTMS. Interestingly, the density and the degree changed in theta band in both groups of nonresponders (decreased in MDD nonre

Rate control in atrial fibrillation: looking beyond the average heart rate.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to provide a perspective on rate control in atrial fibrillation which emphasizes patient wellbeing (exercise tolerance, symptoms, quality of life) over attempts to reduce resting or exercise heart rate to an arbitrary range. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent trials of rhythm versus rate control strategies of treatment in patients with atrial fibrillation suggest that rate control is a viable first line strategy in many patients. The adverse consequences of atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response are partly due to factors other than rate itself,
