Periodontitis and peri-implantitis, driven by dysbiotic biofilms and aberrant host immune responses, lead to pathological inflammation and alveolar bone resorption. Conventional therapies targeting microbial debridement and inflammation control often fail to achieve predictable tissue regeneration. Recent advances in biomaterial science have introduced intelligent biomaterials as transformative tools for precision treatment and functional tissue restoration. These bioengineered scaffolds dynamically interact with the pathological microenvironment through programmable responses to external or e

Implantable medical devices improve quality of life and reduce mortality by restoring the form and function of the human body. Their biomaterial surface components in contact with tissues are, however, susceptible to the host's foreign body response, which drives inflammation and implant fibrous encapsulation. When dysregulated, this response causes implant-related patient morbidity and device failure, ultimately requiring revision surgery. Here, we review the roles that the biomaterial, the host, and the implantation surgery play in the foreign body response. Taking commonly-used implantable

Rising maternal mortality rates in the U.S. are a significant public health issue that must be addressed; however, much of the basic science information required to target pregnancy-related pathologies have not yet been defined. Placental and blastocyst implantation research are challenging to perform in humans because of the early time frame of these processes in pregnancy and limited access to first trimester tissues. As a result, there is a critical need to develop model systems capable of studying these processes in increasing mechanistic detail. With the recent passing of the FDA Moderniz

Glia are imperative in nearly every function of the nervous system, including neurotransmission, neuronal repair, development, immunity, and myelination. Recently, the reparative roles of glia in the central and peripheral nervous systems have been elucidated, suggesting a tremendous potential for these cells as novel treatments to central nervous system disorders. Glial cells often behave as 'double-edged swords' in neuroinflammation, ultimately deciding the life or death of resident cells. Compared to glia, neuronal cells have limited mobility, lack the ability to divide and self-renew, and

We synthesize four series of novel biodegradable poly(alkylene succinate-ran-caprolactone) random copolyesters using a two-step ring-opening/transesterification and polycondensation process with ε-caprolactone (PCL) as a common comonomer. The second comonomers are succinic acid derivatives, with variations in the number of methylene groups (nCH2) in the glycol segment, nCH2 = 2, 4, 8, and 12. The obtained copolyesters were poly(ethylene succinate-ran-PCL) (ESxCLy), poly(butylene succinate-ran-PCL) (BSxCLy), poly(octamethylene succinate-ran-PCL) (OSxCLy), and poly(dodecylene succinate-ran-PCL)

Neurological disorders impact global health by affecting both central and peripheral nervous systems. Understanding the neurogenic processes, i.e., neurogenesis and neuritogenesis, is of paramount importance in the context of nervous system development and regeneration as they hold promising therapeutic implications. Neurogenesis forms functional neurons from precursor cells, while neuritogenesis involves extending neurites for neuron connections. This review discusses how these processes are influenced by genetics, epigenetics, neurotrophic factors, environment, neuroinflammation, and neurotr

The endometrium, as the innermost structure of the uterine cavity, plays a direct role in the implantation of the fertilized egg, its conception, and the formation of normal menstruation. In recent years, with the increasing rate of uterus-related surgeries, the damaged endometrium often fails to repair itself to its original state, resulting in a high incidence of menstrual disorders and reduced fertility in women in their reproductive years. Therefore, it is essential to repair the damaged endometrium to reduce menstrual disorders, pregnancy difficulties, and other adverse events. Biomateria

Oxygen is a vital molecule involved in regulating development, homeostasis, and disease. The oxygen levels in tissue vary from 1 to 14% with deviations from homeostasis impacting regulation of various physiological processes. In this work, we developed an approach to encapsulate enzymes at high loading capacity, which precisely controls the oxygen content in cell culture. Here, a single microcapsule is able to locally perturb the oxygen balance, and varying the concentration and distribution of matrix-embedded microcapsules provides spatiotemporal control. We demonstrate attenuation of hypoxia

As the number of patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases and peripheral vascular diseases rises, the constraints of autologous transplantation remain unavoidable. As a result, artificial vascular grafts must be developed. Adhesion of proteins, platelets and bacteria on implants can result in stenosis, thrombus formation, and postoperative infection, which can be fatal for an implantation. Polyurethane, as a commonly used biomaterial, has been modified in various ways to deal with the adhesions of proteins, platelets, and bacteria and to stimulate endothelium adhesion.
