Rickets in low birth weight infants receiving total parenteral nutrition.

Development of rickets in association with parenteral nutrition is described in four premature infants having gestational ages of 26-31 wk. In the first two infants there was a documented deficiency of vitamin D, but in the second two adequate supplementation was achieved. Vitamin D, whose primary action is to facilitate intestinal absorption of calcium, may also be a hormone of prime necessity in infant bone formation. Conversion of precursor cholecalciferol to the active form of hormone, 1,25-DHCC, requires intermediate hydroxylation by the liver. The premature infant liver may be deficient

Predicting macrosomia and low birth weight with interpretable machine learning.

Abnormal birth weight, including macrosomia and low birth weight, constitutes a significant global health burden associated with both immediate neonatal risks and long-term metabolic complications. However, accurate prediction remains challenging due to fragmented clinical indicators and a lack of model interpretability, limitations often inherent in traditional statistical approaches that struggle with complex, high-dimensional data. This study developed interpretable machine learning models that integrate multifaceted maternal and fetal characteristics to enhance prediction accuracy and faci…

Late onset hearing loss in very low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of a referral protocol for very low birth weight (VLBW) infants and document the incidence rate of late onset hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study (2003-2015) of post-discharge hearing outcomes and risk factors in the VLBW infant population, before and after the institution of a standardized follow-up program. Risk factors were compared between cases and matched controls. RESULTS: Late onset hearing loss detection increased from 2.2 per 100 VLBW infants to 6.9 per 100 post standardization. The follow-up compliance rate nearly doubled. The age at …

Insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in low-birth-weight goat kids.

Low birth weight (LBW) impairs the development and health of livestock by affecting postnatal growth performance and metabolic health in adulthood. Previous studies on indigenous goats in southwest China showed that LBW goat kids had higher mortality and morbidity rates, including hepatic dyslipidemia and liver damage. However, the mechanism of insulin resistance affecting lipid metabolism under LBW conditions remains unclear. In this study, we conducted in vivo glucose-insulin metabolic studies, measured biochemical parameters, and analyzed related regulatory pathways. Both glucose tolerance …

Maternal Testosterone and Offspring Birth Weight: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

CONTEXT: Evidence has shown maternal androgen levels in both the general population and populations with hyperandrogenic disorders are inversely associated with offspring birth weight. CONTEXT: We aimed to investigate the causal effect of maternal testosterone levels in the general population on offspring birth weight and preterm delivery risk using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method. METHODS: We obtained independent genetic instruments from a sex-specific genome-wide association study with up to 230 454 females of European descent from the UK Biobank. Genetic instruments with …

The Role of Manganese in Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

OBJECTIVES: High manganese (Mn) levels during fetal growth or prolonged parenteral nutrition (PN) may have adverse effects on neurodevelopment. We aim to report on Mn levels and their short-term impact on clinical course in very low birth weight infants. METHODS: An observational study including newborns with a gestational age (GA) ≤32 weeks and/or ≤1500 g of birth weight (BW). Newborns received intravenous supplementation of Mn at 1 µg/kg/day (Peditrace ® ) in PN and continued with fortified breast milk. Mothers answered surveys about dietary and other habits and blood levels of Mn in newbor…

Ultrasound for diagnosis of birth weight discordance in twin pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to standardize monitoring in obstetric research of twin pregnancies. Identification of birth weight discordance (BWD), defined as a difference in the birth weights of twins, is a well-documented phenomenon in twin pregnancies. Ultrasound for the diagnosis of BWD informs complex decision making including whether to intervene medically (via laser photo coagulation) or deliver the twins to avoid fetal morbidities or even death. The question is, how accurate is this measurement? OBJECTIVES: To determine the diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) of ultrasoun…

Nasal CPAP complications in very low birth weight preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Nasal trauma due to nasal CPAP (nCPAP) use is a commonly reported complication in infants under 1500 g of birth weight and 32 weeks of gestation. With the rise of nCPAP as the gold standard for non-invasive respiratory support, preventive measures should be considered. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and risk factors of nasal injury in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants with nCPAP. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed neonates hospitalized between 2012 and 2017, with less than 1500 g and 32 weeks of gestational age who received more than 12 hours of nCPAP. Demograph…
