Investigating the effectiveness of economically sustainable carrier material complexes for marine oil remediation.

The application of bioremediation to marine oil spills is limited due to dilution of either nutrients or hydrocarbonoclastic organisms. This study investigated the effectiveness of three unique natural carrier materials (mussel shells, coir peat and mussel shell/agar complex) which allowed nutrients, hydrocarbonoclastic organisms and oil to be in contact, facilitating remediation. TPH analysis after 30 d showed that mussel shells exhibited the greatest capacity to degrade oil with a 55% reduction (123.3 mg l(-1) from 276 mg l(-1)) followed by mussel shell/agar complex (49%) and coir peat (36%)

The transformation of phenyltin species during sample preparation of biological tissues using multi-isotope spike SSID-GC-ICPMS.

A multi-isotope spike species-specific isotope dilution (MI-SSID) calibration strategy in connection with gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was applied to evaluate different extraction procedures for the speciation analysis of phenyltin (PhT) compounds in biological materials: mussel tissue BCR CRM-477 and fish tissue NIES-11. Three different isotope-enriched PhT compounds, (118)Sn-enriched monophenyltin (MPhT), (122)Sn-enriched diphenyltin (DPhT), and (124)Sn-enriched triphenyltin (TPhT), were used for the preparation of spikes to follow and correct for six possi

Temporal lobe epilepsy caused by domoic acid intoxication: evidence for glutamate receptor-mediated excitotoxicity in humans.

We describe the development of temporal lobe epilepsy in an 84-year-old man who had suffered domoic acid intoxication. Following intoxication he had nausea, vomiting, confusion, and coma. Generalized convulsions and complex partial status epilepticus progressively developed. After 3 weeks he improved and was seizure free with severe residual memory deficit. Electroencephalograms initially showed periodic epileptiform discharges, later evolving to epileptic abnormalities over frontotemporal regions with diffuse slow waves. Eight months after the intoxication the electroencephalogram was normal.

Determination of lipophilic marine biotoxins (azaspiracids, brevetoxins, and okadaic acid group) and domoic acid in mussels by solid-phase extraction and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry.

An accurate and efficient method was developed for the determination of azaspiracid shellfish toxins (azaspiracids-1, -2, and -3), neurotoxic shellfish toxins (brevetoxins-2 and -3), diarrhetic shellfish toxins (okadaic acid and dinophysistoxins-1 and -2), and the amnesic shellfish toxin (domoic acid) in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis). Lipophilic marine biotoxins (azaspiracids, brevetoxins, and okadaic acid group) were extracted with 0.5 % acetic acid in methanol under heating at 60°C to improve the extraction efficiency of okadaic acid group toxins and then cleaned up with a C18 solid-ph

Surface modification of porous alpha-tricalcium phosphate granules with heparin enhanced their early osteogenic capability in a rat calvarial defect model.

Heparin binds to and modulates various growth factors, potentially augmenting the bone-forming capability of biomaterials. Here, α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) granules were modified with peptide containing the marine mussel-derived adhesive sequence, which reacts with α-TCP surface, and cationic sequence, which binds to heparin (α-Ph). α-Ph retained the α-TCP phase and intergranule spaces after the surface modification. The existence of heparin on α-Ph granules was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Granules of α-TCP and α-Ph were implanted into critical-size defects in rat cal

Molecular analyses reveal high species diversity of trematodes in a sub-Arctic lake.

To identify trematode diversity and life-cycles in the sub-Arctic Lake Takvatn, Norway, we characterised 120 trematode isolates from mollusc first intermediate hosts, metacercariae from second intermediate host fishes and invertebrates, and adults from fish and invertebrate definitive hosts, using molecular techniques. Phylogenies based on nuclear and/or mtDNA revealed high species richness (24 species or species-level genetic lineages) and uncovered trematode diversity (16 putative new species) from five families typical in lake ecosystems (Allocreadiidae, Diplostomidae, Plagiorchiidae, Schis

Neuroprotection by freshwater clam extract against the neurotoxin MPTP in C57BL/6 mice.

Freshwater clams are a popular health food in Asia and are traditionally used to prevent hepatic inflammation. Freshwater clam extract (FCE) inhibits inflammatory responses in activated macrophages by reducing the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells. In this study, we used a mouse model of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropypridine (MPTP; a neurotoxin)-induced Parkinson's disease (PD) to demonstrate the protective effect of FCE on dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). The role of a PSP-producing Alexandrium bloom in an unprecedented diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) mortality event in Flanders Bay, New York, USA.

Diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) are a threatened or endangered species in much of their range along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Over an approximately three-week period from late April to mid-May 2015, hundreds of adult diamondback terrapins were found dead on the shores of Flanders Bay, Long Island, New York, USA. Concurrent with the mortality event, elevated densities of the paralytic shellfish toxin (PST)-producing dinoflagellate, Alexandrium fundyense (>104 cells L-1) and high levels of PST in bivalves (maximal levels = 540 μg STX eq. 100 g-1 shellfish tissue) were observ

Application of accelerated solvent extraction followed by gel performance chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in mussel tissue.

Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) has been evaluated as a fast alternative to methanolic saponification for the extraction of 12 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from mussel tissue. Several solvent systems and different operating conditions were investigated. The mixture dichloromethane-acetone (1:1, v/v) gave the best recoveries at 125 degrees C and 1500 psi, in a total time of 10 min. No yield difference was found between freeze-drying (Fd) or drying the wet mussel with diatomaceous earth (Ded) prior to extraction. The ASE method was validated using the standard reference material

Possible site of action of 2-methylserotonin in inducing relaxation of acetylcholine-induced contraction in the molluscan (Mytilus edulis) smooth muscle.

1. The present study investigated the presence of 5-HT3 receptor using 2-methylserotonin (2-Me-5-HT) in the smooth muscle of Mytilus ABRM. 2. 2-Me-5-HT relaxed the acetylcholine-induced contraction in a dose-dependent manner ranging from 10(-6) to 3 x 10(-4) M (pD2 = 5.55 +/- 0.32). 3. 2-Me-5-HT-induced relaxation was antagonized by 3 x 10(-5) M ketanserin in a competitive manner (pA2 = 5.14 +/- 0.1), but not by cypropheptadine, mianserin, MDL 72222 or ICS 205-930 at a concentration of 3 x 10(-5) M. 4. 2-Me-5-HT (3 x 10(-4) M) did not alter the content of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP in the ABRM.

The relaxing effect of SKF 38393 on the catch contraction of Mytilus smooth muscle.

The relaxing effect of SKF 38393 on the catch contraction in the anterior byssus retractor muscle (ABRM) of Mytilus and the effect of SKF 38393 on the cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels in the ABRM were investigated. The catch contraction was relaxed by SKF 38393 in a dose-dependent manner. The dose-response curves of SKF 38393 were shifted in parallel to the right by butaclamol (3 X 10(-6) and 6 X 10(-6) M) and haloperidol (3 X 10(-6) and 3 X 10(-5) M). Their pA2 values were 5.69 +/- 0.05 and 5.80 +/- 0.07. The cAMP levels in the ABRM were not altered by SKF 38393 at a concentration (10(-5) M) sufficie

Mussel-inspired nanocellulose scaffold for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory coating for clear aligners.

Aesthetic demands in contemporary dentistry have driven the widespread adoption of clear aligners (CAs), yet their polymeric substrates lack intrinsic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functionality, predisposing the periodontium to inflammation during prolonged wear. Here, we present a multifunctional surface coating for PETG-based CAs, comprising dopamine-grafted TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofibers (TOBC-DA), curcumin (Cur), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), applied via a facile spin-coating process. TOBC-DA serves as a bioadhesive matrix that forms a robust, long-lasting bond with PE

Structural characterization and immunomodulatory activity of a glycogen from Meretrix lyrata.

Marine shellfish are not only important food ingredients in human diets, but also their tissues contain polysaccharides with significant bioactivities and pharmacological effects. In this study, a glucan (MLP60-1) was successfully isolated from the soft tissue of Meretrix lyrata. Structural characterization through monosaccharide compositions, methylation analysis, acid and enzymatic hydrolysis, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy suggested that MLP60-1 is a highly branched glycogen defined by a branching frequency of approximately one branch per 3.3 glucose residues

Mussel-inspired adhesive macromolecule modified zinc oxide nanoparticles incorporated into polyethylene glycol hydrogels for enhancing infected wound healing.

Infected wounds remain a major clinical challenge due to bacterial invasion, which disrupts the natural healing cascade through excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, severe vascular damage, and persistent inflammation. Inspired by the catechol-rich adhesive domains of mussel foot proteins, we developed an extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimetic polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel incorporating polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) for infected wound therapy. The amino acid-functionalized PEG hydrogel reproduces ECM-like properties to facilitate cell migrat

A mussel tissue certified reference material for multiple phycotoxins. Part 5: profiling by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry.

A freeze-dried mussel tissue-certified reference material (CRM-FDMT1) was prepared containing the marine algal toxin classes azaspiracids, okadaic acid and dinophysistoxins, yessotoxins, pectenotoxins, cyclic imines, and domoic acid. Thus far, only a limited number of analogues in CRM-FDMT1 have been assigned certified values; however, the complete toxin profile is significantly more complex. Liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to profile CRM-FDMT1. Full-scan data was searched against a list of previously reported toxin analogues, and characteristic product ions ex

Mercury isotope variations within the marine food web of Chinese Bohai Sea: Implications for mercury sources and biogeochemical cycling.

Mercury (Hg) speciation and isotopic compositions in a large-scale food web and seawater from Chinese Bohai Sea were analyzed to investigate methylmercury (MeHg) sources and Hg cycling. The biota showed ∼5‰ variation in mass dependent fractionation (MDF, -4.57 to 0.53‰ in δ202Hg) and mostly positive odd-isotope mass independent fractionation (odd-MIF, -0.01 to 1.21‰ in Δ199Hg). Both MDF and odd-MIF in coastal biota showed significant correlations with their trophic levels and MeHg fractions, likely reflecting a preferential trophic transfer of MeHg with higher δ202Hg and Δ199Hg than inorganic

Identification and Molecular Docking Study of a Novel Angiotensin-I Converting Enzyme Inhibitory Peptide Derived from Enzymatic Hydrolysates of Cyclina sinensis.

Marine-derived angiotensin-I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides have shown potent ACE inhibitory activity with no side effects. In this study, we reported the discovery of a novel ACE-inhibitory peptide derived from trypsin hydrolysates of Cyclina sinensis (CSH). CSH was separated into four different molecular weight (MW) fractions by ultrafiltration. Fraction CSH-I showed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity. A peptide was purified by fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and its sequence was determined to be Tr

Preliminary Results on the Evaluation of the Occurrence of Tetrodotoxin Associated to Marine Vibrio spp. in Bivalves from the Galician Rias (Northwest of Spain).

Tetrodotoxins (TTX) are a potent group of natural neurotoxins putatively produced by symbiotic microorganisms and affecting the aquatic environment. These neurotoxins have been recently found in some species of bivalves and gastropods along the European Coasts (Greece, UK, and The Netherlands) linked to the presence of high concentrations of Vibrio, in particular Vibrio parahaemolyticus. This study is focused on the evaluation of the presence of Vibrio species and TTX in bivalves (mussels, oysters, cockles, clams, scallops, and razor clams) from Galician Rias (northwest of Spain). Significance of the amide functionality on DOPA-based monolayers on gold.

The adhesive proteins secreted by marine mussels contain an unusual amino acid, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), that is responsible for the cohesive and adhesive strength of this natural glue and gives mussels the ability to attach themselves to rocks, metals, and plastics. Here we report a detailed structural and spectroscopic investigation of the interface between N-stearoyldopamine and a single-crystalline Au(111) model surface and an amide-absent molecule, 4-stearylcatechol, also on Au(111), with the aim of understanding the role of the amide functionality in the packing, orientation, a
