Contrast discrimination, non-uniform patterns and change blindness.

Change blindness--our inability to detect large changes in natural scenes when saccades, blinks and other transients interrupt visual input--seems to contradict psychophysical evidence for our exquisite sensitivity to contrast changes. Can the type of effects described as 'change blindness' be observed with simple, multi-element stimuli, amenable to psychophysical analysis? Such stimuli, composed of five mixed contrast elements, elicited a striking increase in contrast increment thresholds compared to those for an isolated element. Cue presentation prior to the stimulus substantially reduced t…

Blindness as a rare complication of neck dissection.

Blindness is a rare and rather unexpected complication of neck dissection. There have been only a few cases reported to date, all following bilateral neck dissections. We present a case of blindness after one-sided neck dissection and an insidious finding of bilateral common carotid artery occlusion.

[Melanoma-associated retinopathy with night blindness. Case report].

BACKGROUND: Night blindness is usually symptomatic of retinal dysfunction. However, apart from congenital forms of night blindness such as congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) and pigmentary retinopathy without clumping of pigment, the acquired forms of night blindness present a particular diagnostic challenge to the ophthalmologist. CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old patient with formerly healthy eyes presented with malignant skin melanoma and sudden night blindness. Along with reduced acuity, concentric visual field limitation, and a marked decrease in sensitivity of the retinal rods and co…

Causes of blindness among Navajo Indians: an update.

BACKGROUND: The causes of blindness among Navajo Indians, an ethnically distinct community within the United States, were last studied in 1982. This article presents an updated report on the causes of blindness among the Navajo. METHODS: Staff optometrists at each of the hospitals and clinics on the Navajo Reservation collected information for each affected eye: date of onset, cause, blinding process, and best visual acuity. In terms of the total number of eyes affected, it was found that the most frequently encountered etiology was trauma, followed by congenital causes, diabetes mellitus, pr…

[Electrophysiologic tests for diagnosis of congenital night blindness].

UNLABELLED: Electrophysiological study in diagnosis of congenital stationary night blindness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The goal of this study was to describe a family with X-linked congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) in which 3 brothers had similar symptoms: night blindness, reduced visual acuity and "negative" type of Flash ERG. RESULTS: Electrophysiological study permitted to differentiate CSNB from generalized progressive retinal degeneration, what has a prognostic value for these patients.

[Molecular genetic examination in sex-linked color blindness].

The molecular structure of the X-linked colour-vision locus was studied in a family where mild red-green colour-vision deficiency (deuteranomaly) segregated, and in a male with complete absence of red and green colour-vision (blue cone monochromasy). In individuals with normal colour-vision the red and green pigment genes had normal molecular structure whereas individuals with deuteranomaly, in addition to normal red and green genes, also had an abnormal hybrid gene consisting of parts of the green and red pigment genes. The individual with blue cone monocromasy had only a red-green hybrid gen

Blindness and visual impairment in Anambra State, Nigeria.

A study of all new patients seen over a 12-month period in a teaching hospital eye clinic in anambra State, Nigeria shows that 257 out of 820 (31.3%) had low vision in at least one eye. Of the 257 patients, 36 (14%) had bilateral blindness, 71 (27.6%) had uniocular blindness and 181 (70%) had visual impairment in at least one eye. Cataract (33.3%), glaucoma (22.2%) and macular degeneration (11%) were the leading causes of bilateral blindness. The major causes of monocular blindness were cataract (28.2%), glaucoma (21%), trauma (16.9%) and ocular infections (9.9%). Visual impairment was caused …

Sudden blindness after thermocoagulation of the trigeminal ganglion.

Sudden blindness during percutaneous thermocoagulation of the gasserian ganglion occurred in a 72-year-old woman with trigeminal neuralgia. Considered a safe procedure, we highlight the possibility of this serious complication which was probably due to direct damage of the optic nerve.

[Cardiac and arterial causes of transient monocular blindness].

It has been accepted that transient monocular blindness (TMB) is highly suggestive of an ipsilateral carotid artery lesion in patients with arterial risk factors. We confirmed this in 55 patients, who had an internal carotid artery severe stenosis, occlusion or ulceration on angiography in more than 50 per cent of the cases. However, 12-lead-ECG, 2 D--echocardiography and Holter monitoring also showed a potential cardiac source of emboli in 22 per cent of the patients. Most of these patients (83 per cent) also had an appropriate arterial lesion, and the exact cause of the episodes of TMB remai…

Corneal Blindness in Leprosy in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

One hundred and eighteen cases of leprosy with ocular involvement were found to have corneal involvement out of a total 274 cases of ocular in volvement in leprosy. The common eye lesions observed were chronic conjunctivitis (54.01%), keratitis (47.07%), iritis (31.75%) and lagophthalmos (27.76%). In 38.98% of the cases, the time lag between the onset of skin lesions and corneal lesions was 5 to 15 years. The major causes, which lead to involvement of cornea, were corneal anaesthesia (116), lagophthalmos (76), ectropion (21), entropion (11) and trichiasis (4). Corneal blindness constituted 55.…

[Historical milestones in the treatment of night blindness].

Most cases of night-blindness (nyctalopia or hemeralopia) do occur without an apparent organic eye-disease. In the past one spoke of essential or epidemic night-blindness. It is caused by a vitamin deficiency, and is a result of failing dark adaptation; it may lead to xerophthalmia, and finally to a complete permanent blindness, if not treated in time with vitamin A or vitamin A containing food (butter, egg-yolk, fish-liver oil). From time immemorial the healing effects of the intake of liver from fish and various animals for night-blindness has been reported from countries all over the world.…

Cortical blindness in infancy: a follow-up study.

Clinical data of 6 cases of cortical blindness in infancy were analyzed. The underlying brain damage was a result of hypoxic events occurring in the pre- or perinatal period, or shortly after birth. The long-term follow-up of the children showed that some visual recovery occurred but capacity of recognition remained impaired. Early diagnosis of this entity and adequate education will help the visual and psychomotor development of the child.

The epidemiology of trachoma blindness in southern Africa.

Twenty five years ago medical scientists working in Southern Africa clarified the natural history of trachoma and how it affected vision impairment and eventual blindness in rural communities. After this, doctors attempted to take appropriate actions against the disease. Initial surveys indicated a blindness prevalence rate of 760/100,000 among rural Africans compared to 100/100,000 among the white population. Trachoma was found to be the main cause of blindness. It was found mostly among children under 15 years to a very high degree and seemed to start soon after birth. Vaccine development fa…

Visual hallucinations in blindness: the Charles Bonnet syndrome.

A 64-year-old woman developed complex visual hallucinations consisting of snakes crawling out of people's head and on her body. She had become blind 14 years before the onset of the hallucinations. Neurosurgical removal of a large suprasellar meningioma was followed by disappearance of her hallucinations. This case suggests that the complex hallucinations often encountered in blind subjects ("release hallucinations"), a phenomenon originally described by Charles Bonnet in 1769, are related to both sensory deprivation and an impairment in CNS functioning.
