Web-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Female Patients With Eating Disorders: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with eating disorders do not receive help for their symptoms, even though these disorders have severe morbidity. The Internet may offer alternative low-threshold treatment interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of a Web-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention using intensive asynchronous therapeutic support to improve eating disorder psychopathology, and to reduce body dissatisfaction and related health problems among patients with eating disorders. METHODS: A two-arm open randomized controlled trial comparing a Web-based CBT interv…

[Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa].

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa Abstract. Abstract:: Cognitive behavioural therapy for eating disorders is an evidence-based effective method for the treatment of bulimia nervosa. It is based on a multifactorial and behavioal disorder model in which causes, triggering and maintaining conditions are considered and summarized in a behavioral analysis. Symptom-oriented standard procedures are used in the therapy process. Skills such as emotion regulation, interpersonal competence and cognitive techniques are taught. The low self-esteem and body dissatisfaction are of particular i…

[Psychological adjustment following lower limb amputation].

Rehabilitation of lower limb amputees and the fitting of their prosthesis depend highly on the psychological adjustment process and motivational state of the patient. A body image scale for evaluating transsexuals.

Body image has come to mean not only the way one perceives his body but also how one feels about these perceptions. It is an important part of one's total self-concept. As such, it can present a significant problem for many individuals. For individuals with gender identity problems, such as transsexuals, body image dissatisfaction and distortion are a fundamental aspect of their condition. It is possible to more fully understand this condition by appreciating the distinction between the reality of the transsexual's body and his preferred body image. The Body Image (BI-I) scale presented here r

Family therapy versus individual therapy for adolescent females with anorexia nervosa.

Behavioral family systems therapy (BFST) was compared with ego-oriented individual therapy (EOIT) in a controlled, random-assignment investigation involving 22 young adolescents with anorexia nervosa. Each adolescent and her parents received approximately 16 months of outpatient therapy along with a common medical and dietary regimen. BFST emphasized parental control over eating and weight gain, coupled with cognitive restructuring and problem-solving communication training. EOIT emphasized building ego strength, adolescent autonomy, and insight into the emotional blocks to eating. BFST produc

[Lichaam en geest bij anorexia nervosa; een systematisch literatuuroverzicht].

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance is a key component in anorexia nervosa (AN). In the treatment of AN this disturbed perception of the body poses a hindrance for clinical improvement and weight gain. Mindfulness and yoga are associated with a positive effect on the symptomatology of eating disorders. AIM: We examined the therapeutical effect of mindfulness and yoga in the treatment of body image disturbances in AN patients. METHOD: A systematic search in four medical databases using the concepts: ‘anorexia nervosa’, ‘consciousness-based therapy’ and ‘body image

Body image distortion in bulimia nervosa.

Body image perception was measured in 50 women with bulima nervosa and 19 age and weight matched female controls, using a visual size estimation apparatus. Both groups overestimated body widths, but not the width of a neutral object, and whilst there was a trend for bulimics to overestimate more than controls this did not reach significance. The part of the body most overestimated corresponded to the part most disliked in only a third of both groups. The bulimics without a previous history of anorexia nervosa overestimated body width more than those with such a history; this may be related to

Girls reported higher factor scores than boys. BMIz and adiposity were positively associated with each subscale. Age was associated with Dietary Restraint and Body Dissatisfaction. The interac …

Feminine famishment: Graphic medicine and anorexia nervosa.

Socio-cultural rigidities regarding the shape and size of a woman's body have not only created an urgency to refashion themselves according to a range of set standards but also generated an infiltrating sense of body dissatisfaction and poor self-esteem leading to eating disorders. Interestingly, through an adept utilisation of the formal strengths of the medium of comics, many graphic medical anorexia narratives offer insightful elucidations on the question of how the female body is not merely a biological construction, but a biocultural construction too. In this context, by drawing theoretic…

Factors associated with healthcare professional's rating of disfigurement and self-perceived body image in female patients with head and neck cancer.

The purpose of this study was to determine factors associated with self-perceived body image in female patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), and factors associated with healthcare professional's rating of disfigurement, as well as the correlation between patient and observer ratings. This cross-sectional study recruited 105 women with HNC at a large medical centre. Measures of facial disfigurement and body image, as well as demographic and clinical characteristics, were collected. Multivariate multiple linear regression modelling was used to identify factors associated with healthcare prof

Visualizing Emotional Arousal within the Context of Body Size Evaluation: A Pilot Study of Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials in Women with Anorexia Nervosa and Healthy Controls.

Maladaptive body size evaluation processes and body dissatisfaction are known as central risk factors for the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). This study aimed to experimentally test potential key facets, such as (psycho)physiological, cognitive-verbal and behavioral mechanisms, within the context of these evaluation processes. Twenty-two females with AN (AN-G) and 22 healthy controls (HC-G) looked at pictures of their body gradually increasing in weight using a morphing technique. Implicit emotional arousal was assessed using steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) …

Sexual health after a breast cancer diagnosis in young women: clinical implications for patients and providers.

PURPOSE: Sexual dissatisfaction after breast cancer treatment is a common phenomenon that, unfortunately, places a significant strain on young women and is becoming more common as treatment regimens rely more and more on anti-endocrine therapies. METHODS: A PubMed review of peer reviewed manuscripts between the years 1998-2020 evaluating sexual health and wellbeing in cancer patients, primarily young women with breast cancer, was conducted. RESULTS: There are several categories of sexual dissatisfaction women may experience as a result of her breast cancer diagnosis, including menopausal sym
