Signatures of aromatic carbons in the infrared absorption spectra of soils.

High fertility of the terra preta soils is often attributed to the high concentration of aromatic compounds found in these soils. Chemical characterization of two soil samples collected from different locations in Botswana has shown some similar properties with terra preta. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis revealed five common absorption bands between the soil samples and the aromatic compounds. The common bands were found to be due to the vibration of the benzene ring thus indicating traces of aromatic compounds in the soil samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the existence of

[Relapsing fever after travelling in the tropics; a story with a twist].

BACKGROUND: Relapsing fever is an infectious disease caused by Spirochaetes. The presentation is characterised by recurrent episodes of fever. CASE DESCRIPTION: At the end of her trip through South Africa and Botswana, a 54-year-old woman had symptoms of fever and dry cough. Back in the Netherlands, physical examination at the emergency department did not reveal any abnormalities besides fever. Laboratory investigation found thrombocytopenia and elevated infection markers. Thick blood smear revealed the presence of Spirochaetes. Following a working diagnosis of 'relapsing fever', the patient

Causes and treatment of sexually acquired genital ulceration in southern Africa.

The cause of sexually acquired genital ulceration was studied in 240 consecutive migrant mineworkers attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Carletonville, Transvaal. Chancroid proved to be the most common cause of genital ulcer disease, with Haemophilus ducreyi being isolated from 164 patients (68%). In 60% of cases the disease was locally acquired and in the remaining 40%, the infection was acquired in Lesotho, Botswana, Natal, Transkei and Malawi. Syphilis was diagnosed in 62 patients (26%), lymphogranuloma venereum in 16 (7%), genital herpes in 8 (3%) and granuloma inguinale in

Measuring HIV outcomes for adolescent girls and young women programs in Africa: Using the polling booth survey technique.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) remain highly vulnerable to the risk of acquiring HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus). This study was conducted to measure behavioral, biomedical and structural outcomes for the Global Fund funded AGYW programmes in five African countries with high burden of HIV including Botswana, Cameroon. Lesotho, Malawi and Namibia. METHODS: The study used a mixed methods approach to collect behavioral, structural and biomedical outcome data. Quantitative data were collected through 418 Polling Booth Survey (PBS) sessions from 4,581 AGYWs. Participants

A descriptive summary of the WHO availability assessments of medical abortion medicines in eight African countries.

BACKGROUND: The use of medical abortion using either a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, or misoprostol alone has contributed to increased safety and decreased mortality and morbidity. The availability of quality medical abortion medicines is an essential component in the provision of quality abortion care. Understanding the factors that influence the availability of medical abortion medicines is important to help in-country policymakers, program planners, and providers improve availability and use of medical abortion. METHODS: Using a national assessment protocol and an availabili

Drivers of HIV-1 drug resistance to non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) in nine southern African countries: a modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: The rise of HIV-1 drug resistance to non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) threatens antiretroviral therapy's long-term success (ART). NNRTIs will remain an essential drug for the management of HIV-1 due to safety concerns associated with integrase inhibitors. We fitted a dynamic transmission model to historical data from 2000 to 2018 in nine countries of southern Africa to understand the mechanisms that have shaped the HIV-1 epidemic and the rise of pretreatment NNRTI resistance. METHODS: We included data on HIV-1 prevalence, ART coverage, HIV-related mortalit

Unpacking sources of transmission in HIV prevention trials with deep-sequence pathogen data.

To develop effective HIV prevention strategies to guide public health policy the main sources of infection in HIV prevention studies must be identified. Accordingly, we devised a statistical approach that estimates the relative contribution of different sources of infection in community-randomized trials of infectious disease prevention using deep- (or next generation) sequenced pathogen data. We applied this approach to the Botswana Combination Prevention Project (BCPP) and estimated that 90% [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 80-94] of new infections in communities that received combination prev

Continuous isoniazid for the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in people living with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review was carried out to determine the effectiveness of continuous isoniazid (given for at least 36 months) for the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in people living with HIV (PLHIV). METHODS: Six databases and HIV and tuberculosis (TB) conference abstract books were searched for randomized controlled trials that compared the effectiveness of continuous isoniazid with 6 months of isoniazid. Outcomes of interest were TB incidence, mortality, adverse events and risk of drug resistance. Data were pooled using fixed-effects meta-analysis. RESULTS: Thr

Tuberculin reactivity in a pediatric population with high BCG vaccination coverage.

SETTING: The tuberculin skin test (TST) is often included in diagnostic algorithms for tuberculosis (TB) in children. TST interpretation, however, may be complicated by prior Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination. We assessed the prevalence of and risk factors for positive TST reactions in children 3 to 60 months of age in Botswana, a country with high TB rates and BCG coverage of over 90%. METHODS: A multi-stage cluster survey was conducted in one rural and three urban districts. Data collected included demographic characteristics, nutritional indices, vaccination status, and prior TB e

Meloidae of Namibia (Coleoptera): taxonomy and faunistics with biogeographic and ecological notes.

The blister beetle (Coleoptera: Meloidae) fauna of Namibia is studied. The species are arranged within a catalogue containing information on their general distribution, including a list of localities and brief taxonomic remarks. Zoogeographic and ecological analyses were carried out and a photographic appendix, with images and maps of almost all Namibian species, is included. According to a chorological analysis, the Namibian blister beetle fauna appears to be zoogeographically distinct because of the dominance of western southern African elements. The faunistic levels of similarity among dist

The journey through Pick's Disease with a loved one: a personal account.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this short communication is to share my personal experience of caring for a terminally ill family member who was afflicted with Pick's disease. I tell my story in the hope of increasing society's awareness on this little known but devastating disease and assisting those who might be facing a similar situation. Pick's disease is a rare and incurable type of dementia that is associated with atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain over time as a result of accumulation of tau protein fibres known as Pick's bodies. The exact cause is not known, but genetic pred

[HIV/AIDS positive patients in surgery. Part I: Epidemiologic situation].

INTRODUCTION AND MATERIAL: The paper is mostly based on materials and experience of the first author, who took part in an expert action, together with an international team of surgeons, treated more than 6000 HIV-positive patients in Botswana and performed more than 3,200 interventions himself. The co-authors corrected the African experience by a brief survey of experience in this country and reviewed the presently valid legislation. METHODS: The first two parts deal with literature knowledge on HIV/AIDS and confront it with the author's experience over three years of his expert stay in a hos

Attitudes of males on contraception: a KAPE survey.

Acceptance of Family Planning services has been at a very slow pace in Africa. It was generally believed that the African male, due to his conservatism, was an obstacle to the acceptance of contraception by the African female. The study however showed that this was not true. The attitude of the African male towards contraception has changed drastically during the last thirty years, from ultra-conservatism during the 60s to very liberal in the 80s and 90s. Further it can be said that the African male is as well informed and has the same degree of Family Planning and child spacing acceptance-lev

Sustained High HIV Incidence in Young Women in Southern Africa: Social, Behavioral, and Structural Factors and Emerging Intervention Approaches.

Young women in southern Africa experience some of the highest incidence rates of HIV infection in the world. Across southern Africa, HIV prevalence among women increases rapidly between the teenage years and young adulthood. Adult HIV prevalence is 16.8 % in South Africa, 23 % in Botswana, 23 % in Lesotho, and 26.5 % in Swaziland. Existing research has illuminated some of the key social, behavioral, and structural factors associated with young women's disproportionate HIV risk, including gendered social norms that advantage male power in sexual relationships and age disparities in relationship

Etiology of hypoferremia in a recently sedentary Kalahari village.

To determine the etiology of hypoferremia in recently sedentary hunter-gatherers, a community located in the Kalahari Desert of Botswana was studied. Iron profiles of 106 Basarwa (Bushmen, San) volunteers were examined. Hematocrits were measured in the field. The remaining blood was processed for transportation to a research medical laboratory for further studies. Subnormal serum iron values were present, depending on the subpopulation, in 50-52% of the volunteers. Transferrin saturation was subnormal in 35-49% of those tested. The absence of subnormal serum ferritin levels indicates that diet

Bell's palsy in pregnancy as a prodromal sign of preeclampsia: A report of three cases, pregnancy outcome, and literature review.

Bell's palsy is a less common neurological disorder in the general population. Its occurrence during pregnancy can be used as a predictor of adverse obstetric outcomes including preeclampsia and its complications. We report cases of three pregnant women from Botswana who presented with Bell's palsy in the third trimester coexisting with preeclampsia and multiple complications. One of the patient was a case of maternal near-miss with multiple life threating complications including stage 3 acute kidney injury (AKI) and required hemodialysis. The second and third patients developed Bell`s palsy a

Ocular complications of HIV infection in sub-Sahara Africa.

This article reviews the magnitude and spectrum of ocular complications of HIV infection in sub-Sahara Africa. A literature search was done using PubMed, Google, and UpToDate and by talking to ophthalmologists and HIV experts working in the region. Ocular complications of HIV infection, mostly retinal, are seen in 29% to 71% of patients. Cytomegalovirus retinitis affects 0% to 16.5% of HIV-infected patients and is treated successfully with intravitreal ganciclovir in South Africa and Botswana. Ocular surface squamous neoplasia is seen in 4% to 7.8% of persons with HIV (a 5%-6% increase in Ugan
