Neuromodulatory Effects of Alternating Current Electroacupuncture on PTSD-like Behaviors via Gut-Brain Axis Communication.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition with limited treatment efficacy. Alternating current electroacupuncture (AC-EA) represents a novel neuromodulatory approach, though its mechanisms-particularly its influence on the gut-brain axis-remain underexplored. Methods: We investigated the neurobehavioral and microbiological effects of AC-EA in a rat model of PTSD induced by single prolonged stress. Animals received AC-EA at Baihui (GV20) and Mingmen (GV4) acupoints with varying parameters (0.5 mA/20 Hz, 1 mA/20 Hz, and 1 mA/2 Hz). Behavioral tests

Maternal Tryptophan Supplementation Alters Offspring Gut-Brain Axis and Behavior in a Sex-Specific Manner.

The maternal diet is a key determinant of offspring neurodevelopment, influencing gut microbiota composition and the gut-brain axis. These interactions are critical in shaping sex-specific vulnerabilities to neuropsychiatric disorders. Tryptophan, an essential amino acid and precursor to serotonin, plays a pivotal role in neurodevelopment and immune function. However, the impact of maternal tryptophan supplementation on healthy offspring's neurochemical and behavioral outcomes remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of a tryptophan-enriched maternal diet on offspring gut microbiot

Caffeine plays a prevention role in stress-induced depression by modulating gut-brain axis function.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine intake is inversely associated with depression in epidemiological studies and can impact gut microbiota. Considering the close relationship between depression and gut microbiota, we conducted this study to investigate whether prophylactic caffeine use could influence the development of depression by affecting gut-brain axis. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into three groups: a control group, one group receiving chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) as CUS group, and one group receiving CUS after intraperitoneal injection with caffeine (CAF) as CAF group. The Glutamatergic System Regulates Feather Pecking Behaviors in Laying Hens Through the Gut-Brain Axis.

Feather pecking (FP) is a significant welfare and economic problem in laying hen husbandry. While there is growing evidence that the glutamatergic system plays a crucial role in regulating FP behavior, the biological mechanisms remain unclear, largely due to the limited uptake of peripheral glutamate across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, we applied a multi-omics approach combined with physiology assays to answer this question from the perspective of the gut-brain axis. A total of 108 hens were randomly assigned to two groups (treatment and control) with six replicates each, and the treat

Rebalancing NOX2/Nrf2 to limit inflammation and oxidative stress across gut-brain axis in migraine.

Migraine is one of the most common neurological illnesses, and it is characterized by complicated neurobiology. It was confirmed the influence of inflammation and oxidative stress in migraines and also in distal organs such as the intestine. Indeed, the constant bidirectional communication between the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, known as the gut-brain axis, has become an attractive target involved in different human disorders. Herein, we explored the role of NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) in nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced migraine in mice models to discover the mecha

Resveratrol Attenuates Neuroinflammation and Gut-Brain Axis Dysfunction Induced by Lead and Cadmium Co-Exposure by Modulating Gut Microbiota in Rats.

Resveratrol (RSV), a dietary polyphenol widely present in traditional medicinal plants and foods, exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are relevant to ethnopharmacological strategies for protecting against environmental neurotoxicants. Given increasing real-world co-exposure to lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), elucidating RSV's capacity to preserve gut-brain axis (GBA) homeostasis has direct translational relevance for populations relying on phytochemical interventions. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into control, Pb-Cd model, and RSV treatment groups (10, 20, or 40 mg/kg

Hyperammonemia induced gut microbiota dysbiosis and motor coordination disturbances in mice: new insight into gut‑brain axis involvement in hepatic encephalopathy.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neuropsychiatric hepatic‑induced syndrome in which several factors are involved in promoting brain perturbations, with ammonia being the primary factor. Motor impairment, incoordination, and gut dysbiosis are some of the well‑known symptoms of HE. Nevertheless, the link between the direct effect of hyperammonemia and associated gut dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of HE is not well established. Thus, this work aimed to assess motor function in hyperammonemia and gut dysbiosis in mice. Twenty‑eight Swiss mice were distributed into three groups: two‑week and four‑we

Mannan-oligosaccharides-based self-assembly nanoparticles enable gut-specific quercetin release, providing multi-pathway protection against AD via gut-brain axis.

Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS), as indigestible functional prebiotic, support intestinal health. Here, we engineered MOS to undergo linoleic acid (LA)-mediated self-assembly with quercetin, forming lipid bilayer nanoparticles (MOS-LA/LA-Q NPs). These nanoparticles (NPs) achieved a high quercetin encapsulation efficiency (92.4%) and demonstrated superior stability in aqueous solution at 4 °C. The MOS outer layer effectively protected the quercetin core from gastrointestinal stress. Triggered by microbial enzymes, the system enabled a sustained quercetin release, up to 60% over 48 h, representing

Significance of the gut tract in the therapeutic mechanisms of polydopamine for acute cerebral infarction: neuro-immune interaction through the gut-brain axis.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has made significant progress in elucidating gastrointestinal complications following acute cerebral infarction (ACI), which includes disorders in intestinal motility and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Nevertheless, the role of the gut (which is acknowledged as being the largest immune organ) in the immunoreactive effects of polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA) on acute ischemic stroke remains inadequately understood. In addition to its function in nutrient absorption, the gut acts as a protective barrier against microbes. Systemic immune responses, which are triggere

Key role of the gut-microbiota-brain axis via the subdiaphragmatic vagus nerve in demyelination of the cuprizone-treated mouse brain.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease that attacks the central nervous system. Dietary intake of cuprizone (CPZ) produces demyelination resembling that of patients with MS. Given the role of the vagus nerve in gut-microbiota-brain axis in development of MS, we performed this study to investigate whether subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (SDV) affects demyelination in CPZ-treated mice. SDV significantly ameliorated demyelination and microglial activation in the brain compared with sham-operated CPZ-treated mice. Furthermore, 16S ribosomal RNA analysis revealed that SDV signif
