Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is an approach to resection of bronchogenic cysts (BC) which is effective and viable. There may be complications as a result of pericystic adhesions to neighboring structures during dissection. This report describes an unusual case of an operative complication, the rupture of the main left bronchus. The initial VATS approach was converted into a right thoracotomy to remove the cyst and suture the bronchus once adequate exposure was obtained. Bronchus reconstruction failed and a few hours later, it was necessary to perform a left thoracotomy. A left p…

We report a very rare case of a bronchogenic cyst combined with nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease in an immunocompetent patient. A 21-year-old male was referred to our institution because of a cough, fever, and worsening of abnormalities on his chest radiograph, despite anti-tuberculosis treatment. Computed tomography of the chest showed a large multi-cystic mass over the right-upper lobe. Pathological examination of the excised lobe showed a bronchogenic cyst combined with a destructive cavitary lesion with granulomatous inflammation. Microbiological culture of sputum and lung ti…

Bronchogenic cysts are generally detected shortly after birth or in early childhood. Most lesions are found in the mediastinum, along the tracheobronchial tree or in the lung parenchyma. Cutaneous or subcutaneous bronchogenic cysts are rarely reported. Our patient was the second case in the English literature who had a cyst over the manubrium sterni in adult life. Surgical total excision is the definitive treatment of extrathoracic bronchogenic cysts, needle aspiration management should not be tried because of association with malignant lesions as mucoepidermoid carcinoma and malign melanoma h…

Bronchogenic cyst is a rare clinical; entity that occurs due to an anomalous development of the ventral foregut; they are usually single but may be multiple and can be filled with fluid or mucus. They have been found all along the transoesophageal course, in perihilar or intraparenchymal sites, with predilection for the area around the carina. The location of the cyst depends on the embryonic stage of development at which the anomaly occurs. When the abnormal budding occurs during the early development, the cyst tends to be located along the tracheobronchial tree. The cysts that develop later …

Bronchogenic cysts are classified as a type of congenital foregut cyst. They are usually extrapulmonary and occur mostly along the tracheobronchial tree. Intracardiac bronchogenic cysts are very rare. As far as we know, only 3 cases have been reported previously. This paper presents a unique case of a 70-year-old male who was diagnosed with a bronchogenic cyst in the interatrial septum with a concomitant persistent left superior vena cava. He underwent successful complete excision of the cyst under cardiopulmonary bypass and enjoyed an uneventful life with normal sinus rhythm during the 1-year…

BACKGROUND Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are rare congenital anomalies that are extremely uncommon in the retroperitoneum; in this uncommon anatomical location, they are frequently misdiagnosed radiologically as solid adrenal or pancreatic tumors. This report aims to enhance clinical awareness and diagnostic vigilance regarding ectopic retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts (ERBCs) that closely mimic other common endocrine or urological entities. CASE REPORT We report a case of a middle-aged man presenting with recurrent right flank pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) demonstrated multiple right r…

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are congenital lesions found in the mediastinum, particularly the posterior-superior area. The current study aims to report a rare case of a subcutaneous bronchogenic cyst in the chest wall.
CASE REPORT: A 41-year-old patient presented with a swelling of the chest wall. The mass had been present since birth. On examination, there was a large soft, round mass over the sternum subcutaneously. It was a fixed, non-flatulence, non-pulsatile, and non-tender mass.
DISCUSSION: Usually, the condition develops between the fifth and sixteenth weeks of gestation, when th…

BACKGROUND: Our aim in this study was to compare the results of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery with those of open surgery regarding efficacy, morbidity, and long-term recurrence of bronchogenic cysts in light of the literature.
METHODS: This study comprises the data of 51 patients whose pathological diagnosis revealed bronchogenic cyst after surgical excision between January 2010 and December 2016. There were two groups according to the type of resection: video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and thoracotomy.
RESULTS: Of the patients included in the study, 25 (49%) were male and …

Bronchogenic cysts are the most common cystic mediastinal lesion in children. Bronchogenic cyst causing unilateral obstructive emphysema is a rare presentation. We report the case of a one and half month old infant who presented with respiratory distress which was initially suspected as left pneumothorax on frontal chest radiograph but was later found to be due to hyperinflated left lung and hence the possibility of congenital lobar emphysema was considered. CT thorax and limited MRI sections revealed a cystic lesion in mediastinum causing obstructive emphysema and mediastinal displacement. He…

A 58-year-old man presented with right-sided chest pain. Radiography and computed tomography showed a pleural effusion in the right chest and a mass in the right hilum. Thoracentesis showed a hemothorax. The carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 level in the pleural effusion was very high, requiring differentiation from malignancy. Positron emission tomography showed no significant fluorodeoxy glucose (FDG) accumulation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic lesion. The tumor was resected for both a diagnosis and treatment. A pathological examination demonstrated a bronchogenic cyst. An immuno…

We report a case of congenital lobar emphysema in an adult due to bronchial atresia and presenting characteristically with a solitary pulmonary nodule due to a mucous plug. In the same patient the presence of a bronchogenic cyst leads to a hypothesis that the atretic segment is the result of an insult occurring during the 5th or 6th week of intrauterine life rather than one occurring after airway development is complete.

The authors report the case of a 40-year-old man who has presented for many years an intermittent progressive spastic paraplegia. Plain films of the spine show very important dysraphic abnormalities of the inferior dorsal column and the myelography shows a complete block suggesting an intramedullary space-occupying lesion at four levels above the vertebral abnormalities. The operation permits a total removal of an intramedullary "bronchogenic cyst". In the post-operative course, the neurologic deficit improves, six months later a spastic paraparesia remains. The review of the literature shows …

RATIONALE: Ectopic bronchogenic cysts (EBCs) are rare congenital lesions, mostly located in the mediastinum. They are extremely rare in the abdomen, particularly near the spleen.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old Chinese female, who was asymptomatic and undergoing a routine health examination, was incidentally found to have a low-density soft tissue mass near the spleen. Preoperative considerations included a mucinous tumor, a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, or malignant tumors such as gastric cancer.
DIAGNOSES: A contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan showed a 2.6 cm soft tissue mass betw…

Intradural extramedullary bronchogenic cysts (IEBCs) are exceedingly rare congenital entities, composed of respiratory epithelial cells derived from the anomalous development of the embryonic foregut. Due to their exceptionally low morbidity, only limited cases are available. Consequently, the clinical features and optimal therapeutic approach remain poorly understood. We report a very unusual case of a 54-year-old Mexican male who initially presented with paraparesis seven years ago, leading to a significant gait disturbance. Conservative therapy was employed, with notable improvements seen a…

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst (RBC) is an extremely rare developmental abnormality. Most are benign tumors but malignant transformation is possible. Because of their anatomical position, RBCs are easily misdiagnosed as adrenal or pancreatic solid tumors on radiological evaluation. Here, we report a case of RBC, review the literature, and summarize some important features.
CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old woman was incidentally found to have a retroperitoneal tumor during a physical examination. Enhanced computed tomography and laboratory evaluations, including routine blood examina…
