Traditional practices and beliefs around placental disposal in Pakistan: Community perspectives and implications for environmentally safe and culturally sensitive practices.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the traditional beliefs, practices of the community and health system in relation to safe placental disposal … s related to fertility, rituals and distrust of hospitals. FGDs highlighted shared consensus, where burial was a practice of honor and security and women were shown to be deprived of agency in hospitals. CONCLUSION: In Pakistan, placenta disposal is a culturally symbolic practice that has not been adequately incorporated into safe clinical protocols, wh …

A taphonomic reassessment of Qafzeh 25 and its implications for violence, health and funerary practices.

The Qafzeh cave preserves one of the most significant Middle Paleolithic human assemblages, offering key insights into health, possible viol … h-25 was deliberately buried, reinforcing previous interpretations of the site as a place of formal burials in the early Late Pleistocene. Additionally, we identified additional dental pathologies, including new carious lesion and enamel defects. These findings add to the previous recorded evidence of caries and dental anomalies in the Qafzeh sample, hig …

Endemic congenital iodine deficiency syndrome from a 19th to 20th century poorhouse cemetery in Riggisberg, Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe skeletal remains showing features consistent with congenital iodine deficiency syndrome (CIDS), also kno … immature skeletal remains, and - at least in the modern period - frequent institutionalization and burial in specific cemeteries belonging the institutions. SIGNIFICANCE: Several new cases of CIDS increase the small body of known affected remains and add to the knowledge about its skeletal manifestations. This study contributes to the differential diag …

Identifying signature features of epidemic diseases from 19th century all-cause mortality data.

Deadly epidemics leave distinct marks on all-cause mortality. When cause-specific health data are unavailable, studies of all-cause mortality may be necessary for understanding epidemic and pandemic diseases in history. Here, we identify and catalog every major epidemic in Denmark during the 100-year period between 1815 and 1915, based on a recently digitized and compiled data set of all 4 million burials during the period. Although the data set lacks specific information on cause of death, we were able to determine plausible etiology for the majority of 418 identified mortality crises that ha…

Cranial surgery in the North Pontic region during the 3rd millennium BC.

This study examines the development of cranial surgery in the North Pontic region during the Early and Middle Bronze Age (late 4th and 3rd millennium BC according to the Eastern European chronology). 389 skulls from burials of this period were examined for evidence of surgical intervention. Twenty five such cases were identified and analysed for sex, age, temporal and spatial distribution, size and number of lesions, signs of healing, technique, motivation and complications of the surgery. The study indicates that cranial surgery was a well-developed medical practice in the North Pontic region…

Some experiments and remarks regarding the possible formation of blood stains on the Turin Shroud: stains attributed to the crown of thorns, the lance wound and the belt of blood.

The Turin Shroud (TS) is a Christian relic interpreted to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. It exhibits red discolorations that have been interpreted as blood stains and that are the subjects of a highly controversial discussion. We conducted experiments to identify theoretically possible explanations for the stains attributed to the crown of thorns, the lance wound and the belt of blood. In the experiments with a focus on the stains attributed to the crown of thorns, a very similar stain pattern as on the TS could be provoked by simulating the following sequence of events: blood from …

Mass producible, robust SERS substrates based on metal film on nanosphere (MFON) on an adhesive substrate for detection of surface-adsorbed molecules and their evaluation by helium ion microscopy.

We have developed a SERS stamp that can be pressed directly onto a solid surface for characterization of surface-adsorbed target molecules. The stamp was fabricated by transfer of a dense monolayer of SiO2 nanospheres from a glass surface onto a piece of adhesive tape and subsequent evaporation of silver. The performance of the resulting SERS stamps was evaluated by their exposure to methyl mercaptan vapor, and immersion in rhodamine 6G and ferbam solutions. It was found that beside the nanosphere diameter and metal deposition thickness, the extent of burial of the nanospheres into the adhesiv…

Comparison of decomposition rate of hind limbs of preserved mice with ethanol-glycerin and formaldehyde of advanced fixative solution.

Learning anatomy in medical school is still closely based on the use of cadavers. The burial of preserved cadaver poses a problem, specifically, it contaminates the soil with formalin. Many studies have been conducted to find an alternative fixative to update or modify formalin usage. One of them is ethanol-glycerin (EG), which suggests promising results. Despite that fact, there has yet to be any research comparing the decomposition rate between EG and formalin. This study is conducted to compare the rate of decomposition between the two fixative solutions, EG and 4% formalin on the hind limb…

Biological kinship in 750 year old human remains from Central Argentina with signs of interpersonal violence.

Human skeletal remains of an adult male (20-24 years old) and a juvenile (4-8 years old), dated to 750 ± 85 14C years BP, were found on the southern margin of Mar Chiquita Lagoon (Córdoba, Argentina). Both individuals show signs of being victims of interpersonal violence, with arrowheads associated with the remains and perimortem lesions on the juvenile, as well as an unusual form of burial, with the juvenile partially overlapped with the adult. The aim of this work is to study a possible kin relationship between these two individuals through ancient DNA analysis. Biological kinship was evalua…

A very rare case of possible actinomycosis of the mandible from the Middle Ages.

OBJECTIVE: Documented cases of actinomycosis in archaeological skeletons are very rare, especially from Central Europe. Our contribution will help facilitate the differential diagnosis of this disease for other paleopathologists. MATERIAL: This paper describes a pathological finding of the skeleton of a 40-year-old male from a burial ground in Sady-Špitálky (Czech Republic) dated to the 10th-12th century. METHODS: The affected skeleton was evaluated as a probable case of actinomycosis on the basis of a detailed macroscopic, X-ray and histological examination. The osteolytic foci examined wer…

Key indicators demonstrating challenges for Guinea included: number of unsafe burials, percent of EVD-positive samples, and days between symptom onset and case hospitalization. Sierra Leone's primary key indicator was the number of districts with ≥1 security incident. Liberia controlled their outbreak before much of the key-indicato …

Scurvy has increasingly been recognized in archaeological populations since the 1980s but this study represents the first examination of the … ccurrence of infectious and metabolic diseases. A recent discovery of 970 human skeletons from mass burials dating to the height of the famine in Kilkenny City (1847-1851) provided an opportunity to study the skeletal manifestations of scurvy-a disease that became widespread at this time due to the sudden lack of Vitamin C which had previously almost exc …
